Classroom Updates
Earth Science with Ms. Ballantine
Hello scientists,
This past week was test heavy as students completed their Term 4 Roots summative and then their MAP End of Year science testing. Great job on making it through all that, that wraps up our testing in science for the year! Early finishers began considering topics for their Oceania project which we’ll be working on in science and geography. Students will choose from one of the following five topics in science class:
Wildfires
Water contamination
Overfishing
Carbon footprints
Urban Heat Islands
In science class, students will design a solution to their chosen issue and create a model to present to their classmates. This will complement the resolution they will write in Geography class.
Math with Mr. Brown & Mr. Gawthrop
Math 6
This week students participate in EOY Assessments and simplifying and solving equations and inequalities. This coming week students will work on adding and subtracting positive and negative integers (with and without a number line). Students will continue to be provided the opportunity to work on and retake recently taken assignments/projects during Advisory (or afterschool) at their request. Included in our virtual classroom is a link to a portion of the Illustrative Mathematics website curriculum dedicated to allowing parents to give support with current topics from home.
Math 7
This week, students participate in EOY Assessments and write and solve two step equations with variables on both sides. This coming week students will write and solve two step equations with variables on both sides and find the slope of an equation given a graph and a set of two points. Students will continue to be provided the opportunity to work on and retake recently taken assignments/projects during Advisory at their request. Included in our virtual classroom is a link to a portion of the Illustrative Mathematics website curriculum dedicated to allowing parents to give support of current topics from home.
Please encourage students to utilize the “Parking Lot” in class to leave questions or requests (ie. retake requests) Notes and videos on current/previous/upcoming concepts as well as supportive platforms can be found in the virtual classroom (www.framevr.io/brownmath).

Language Arts with Ms. Byrns
This week students really got into the monsters and battles of Beowulf, reading chapters 6-13. Next week, students will finish the book after we complete the MAP Reading test. The MAP assessment will show students' independent reading levels and we are looking for growth from their beginning of year scores.
At this point, students should be 3/4 of the way through their Hero's Journey book groups. Students should FINISH their Hero's Journey books by next Friday, June 6.
