“Foster Growth by Challenging Critical Thinkers to Take Risks,
Honor Differences & Care for Others”
EXPRESSING IDEAS & OPINIONS IN WRITING
Students in several grade levels are sharing new learning and opinions in writers’ workshops. Kindergarten and fifth grade students have moved into their informational units. In kindergarten students are writing How To books that teach others about a variety of topics, including how to wash your hands, make a specific snack, play a certain sport or enjoy a certain game. Students sketch across pages to ensure they do not miss an important step in the process. They are also working on labeling their pictures and writing words and sentences. In the fifth grade informational unit students are writing like historians. They are currently researching colonial America and exploring different structures to organize their information.
First graders on the other hand are in their opinion unit. They are currently writing reviews on favorite games, restaurants and movies. They are finding different and specific reasons to support their recommendations. They are passionate about their topics and enjoy sharing their reviews with others.
Writing continues to be one of Gold Rush students' favorite subject areas! Teacher teams are ensuring that students are continuing to write long each day as they implement the Benchmark Writing Workshop Curriculum this year. We continue to be proud of students’ enthusiasm and work!
USING DATA TO SET GOALS & PLAN
Before winter break all students took a variety of formal and informal assessments to determine their growth and achievement. This data was shared with parents in the winter Elementary Progress Reports (EPRs). One of the assessments given was the I-Ready winter diagnostic assessment. This state and District approved measure assesses students' growth and achievement in reading and math. Gold Rush was pleased to see significant gains in students’ achievement and growth in both content areas!
All grade level teams are currently analyzing the data to identify instructional areas to focus on. Teachers are also reviewing students' individual data and adjusting their goals. Your child’s new goals will be the focus of his/her small group and/or individual work.
FOCUS ON INTEGRITY
This month second and third grade students are learning about integrity with GRE School Counselor Mrs. Fitch. They read the book The Empty Pot, which highlights bravery, honesty and integrity. Students defined integrity as doing the right thing, even when no one is looking. Students identified areas at school and at home where showing integrity matters. Students also shared ways to model this important trait, such as listening the first time, picking up after ourselves, keeping our promises and being honest.
Mrs. Fitch emphasized that maintaining integrity in the face of peer pressure can be challenging. She reminded students that it can be difficult to stand up for what you believe in when others are doing something else. She did reassure students that the more one demonstrates integrity the more natural it becomes.
LIBRARY REMODEL HAS BEGUN
GRE's library remodel is underway! Books have been packed, existing furniture has been removed and new electrical wiring has been installed. As you can imagine, packaging and storing over 15,000 books was a large task! The space will be painted this weekend and then we will wait eagerly for the arrival of our new shelves, seating and tables in mid January.
As you are aware, the library is closed through mid February while construction is underway. GRE Librarian, Mrs. Golish, is holding library lessons in the classroom during these months. While students are unable to check out books during the remodel, all students will continue to have access to online libraries, including EPIC books and RAZ kids. Classroom teachers will reshare how to access these online resources via classroom communication.
Our remodel is made possible through our Digger Dash Dollars and school funds. We thank our parent community for contributing to this meaningful project. We feel fortunate that our strong financial position and our community contributions allow us to complete a full remodel.
We cannot wait for students, staff and parents to see the bright new space! We will share opportunities for families to visit the remodeled space in February.
