News from School
5th Grade Visits MUMS
On Wednesday, the 5th graders walked over to MUMS to see their future school! They got a tour from Mrs. Wisell, the principal; learned about MUMS from peer counselors; did some art together; and played games in the gym with Ms. Carra. It was a stellar morning. These students are ready (after 6/16!) for MUMS!
Off in the Woods
Kindergarteners went up to the Robert Frost Trails in Ripton on Tuesday as part of their annual visit. They worked on observing in nature and writing about what they saw. They also explored in the woods, found some frogs, climbed some trees, and enjoyed playing outside on a warm day.
5th Grade Trip to the Montshire
The 5th graders went all the way over to Norwich, VT last week to visit the Montshire Museum. They had a great time inside, building with different blocks, blowing bubbles, exploring the inside story of toys, and more! Students really enjoyed playing with Keva blocks as well as exploring how a scarf would travel through tubes. They explored the fog room and how water moves over the landscape. There were instruments to play, ant and bee houses to watch. It was a full day of inquiry. If you haven't checked out the museum, it is so fun and worth a visit!
Golden Dome Challenge
On Tuesday, a group of Mary Hogan 4th and 5th graders traveled to the Mini Ilsley for a fun competition with 4th-7th graders across ACSD. The mixed grade and school teams competed based on thier knowledge of the 25 Golden Dome Books from 2024-25. Questions included: How were the characters in the Swift family named? and Where does Helen live (in The Lost Year)? There was a tie for winning teams between The Sparkly Yummy Shoes and The Gold Chunky Monkeys. Other teams included the Red Rocket Raiders and the Rubber Ducks.
At the VT Book Shop
Students who participated in the Golden Dome Challenge headed over to the VT Book Shop after the competition to pick out some new books for our school library. Miss Julie also took some 2nd and 3rd graders who particpated in the MiddReads Challenge also had a chance to get new books for Mary Hogan's library. Everyone was really excited to expand our collection of awesome books!
Puppets in Education
We were fortunate to have a puppet show on Thursday for preschool through 3rd grade students. The puppets got the students thinking about their worries and how worry feels in their bodies. They also had a chance to think about what to do with a worry.
Mary Hogan Student Class Placement Process
We are at the time of year when we are actively working on class placements for 2025-26. This is a process that is done with great care, using data to create balanced classrooms. You can find more information about our approach below. Class assignments will be mailed in late June.
Our Core Beliefs in Class Placement
We work to build classes that function as dynamic learning centers that ensure that each child learns and grows academically and socially. The classes are designed with the goal of creating optimal learning environments for both the individual child and the group of children as a whole.
As parents and educators, we all want the best possible learning environment for our children.
As school leaders, one of our primary responsibilities is to ensure that the staff has the requisite skills to accommodate a diverse group of learners. We expect all of our teachers to be able to provide differentiated learning opportunities to all of our students, in order to meet a wide range of abilities and learning styles. We also expect that all teachers will be working to create a positive social climate for students. Additionally, all our teachers are professionals. They work in grade level teams to ensure consistency of curriculum.
Because each of our teachers is highly qualified, skilled and dedicated to their work with children, specific teacher requests are not part of the process.
Placements are made with input from teachers (classroom, AMS, interventionists, special educators), counselors, and administrators.
Considerations in the Placement Process:
We strive to create balanced classrooms for students through assessment of the whole child, including:
Educational needs (academic, social emotional, physical)
Learning styles
Students’ strengths and stretches
Demographic data
Student connection points to build friendships
