Message from the Head of School Message from the Head of School

With the sun shining and the weather warming up, we have been delighted to welcome so many visitors this week ranging from Mums, Aunts and Grandmas coming into Reception and Nursery to a visit from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution to talk about water safety.

MAG Week – Reception and Nursery

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week, both Reception and Nursery welcomed into school Mums, Aunts and Grandmas. We were delighted to show them our classrooms, the work we have been doing as well as organising extra little activities for the children to do. A huge thank you to all the staff involved for organising such a valuable experience for our families and children. Watch this space as DUG week will be coming soon! (Dads Uncles and Grandfathers).

Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI)

Living so close to the Thames and also with many of our children visiting local swimming pools, we were delighted to welcome back the RNLI to come in and deliver a talk to our children. They presented a very interesting assembly on water safety including how to stay safe at the beach, lakes and the sea and their top tips including how to perform the float position. Please see below our gallery as well as the RNLI safety at the Beach link:

Road Safety

Finally, I have been made aware of a number of near accidents outside our junior school with children and adults using the zebra crossing. Although the Highway code makes it clear that drivers must stop and give way to pedestrians, this doesn't always occur leading to some very close misses and distressing situations. It is vital that we teach our children to STOP, LOOK and LISTEN prior to actually crossing the road. Please take some time to discuss this at home and also model the behaviour when you are using the crossing yourself. We will share this information at school but as adults we know it is more meaningful and impactful when school and home have the same message.

We hope you have a restful bank holiday weekend and we look forward to welcoming the children back on Tuesday.

In class, we have begun discovering all about ‘Amazing Animals’ in our science lessons. We are looking forward to discussing the features of different animals; what they eat, and how these can be grouped according to different criteria. We will be learning what it means to be a carnivore, herbivore and omnivore, sorting animals into their relevant group according to their diet, as well as learning about vertebrates and invertebrates, studying these carefully before sorting them into their appropriate groups according to whether or not they had a spine.

We have enjoyed looking closely at castles in history, looking at the features of castles and investigating the methods invaders used to attack (e.g., mining, siege tower etc.) and how the occupants tried to defend it. We worked in groups to record our findings before presenting these to the class, sharing the best tactics to attack and defend each castle.

In art, we have been looking at the work of various architects and learning a range of different paper folding techniques to create our own piece of structural art.

We have been looking at the concept of fractions in maths, including finding and making halves and quarters of various objects and shapes, as well as using our knowledge of splitting a whole into four equal parts to find a quarter of a quantity.

Our current focus book in English is ‘Handa’s Surprise’ by Eileen Brown. It is set in a village of the Luo tribe in south-west Kenya, and tells the story of a girl called Handa, who wants to surprise her friend, Akeyo, with seven delicious fruits. We have been writing expanded noun phrases to describe the fruits and animals from the story, and we are now using these to help us to write our own version of the story. We have been sequencing the story’s events and creating a story plan to help us remember the structure, before putting pencil to paper and becoming authors ourselves. We think our own versions of the story are pretty amazing!

Parking Parking

Reminder to all parents to be considerate to our neighbours when dropping off and collecting your child. Do not park on zig-zag lines, double yellow lines or block neighbours driveways. Parking on zig-zag lines blocks visibility for both drivers and pedestrians, particularly young children who may be harder to see. Please park legally and considerately, and allow extra time to find appropriate parking. Even better – consider walking, cycling or using a park-and-stride location if possible.
