Read Across America Week

We finished up Read Across America Week the first week of March. Our Elementary Students dressed dressed up as their favorite story book characters and held a parade for the school. We ended the week with buddy reading. Our younger kids teamed up with our High Schoolers to spend time reading to them from their favorite book! We were also able to give back to our community by donating several boxes of books to the local kid's shelter, Blessing House.

Senior Art Student Headed to States

Our very own Senior, Kaiden Lanier, is headed to states! Kaiden was completely surprised to find out that his art piece, 'Da Black Man in the 30's', had been chosen to compete at the state level in The Ohio Governor's Youth Art Competition.

For those who like statistics here are some numbers for you. This year there were 8,301 total submissions for the state. Our region (Region 8) had 1,461 submissions. We were the second largest region again behind Central (Columbus). Check out Kaiden's unique piece below.

Volleyball Camp

The Lady Cyclones Volleyball Team had their second annual volleyball camp for girls in grades 2nd-5th. Our high school girls volleyball team teamed up with coaches to help the elementary girls learn some volleyball skills. During the camp the kids learned basic volleyball skill such as passing, setting, and hitting the ball. Looking forward to when these girls are old enough to be on the Lady Cyclones Volleyball Team!

To keep in the spirit of giving back to our community. Horizon's Student Council has decided to take $500 of the money raised and donate it The American Red Cross. If you would like to see more about this event, check out the article in The Morning Journal by clicking the article below.

The Horizon Science Academy of Lorain, 760 Tower Blvd., is proving that small things can make a difference. The school's beloved annual Penny Wars fundraiser took place throughout the month of February and ended March 3. "It's one of the activities that brings the school together," said Student Council President Senior Kennedy Short.

4.0 Celebration

Students in grades 6th-12th were recognized for their academic excellence in the first semester. We had 23 middle and high school students who received a 4.0 or higher in the first semester. Students were presented with an award, 2 large pizzas, a dessert, and a 2-liter to share with their families. We'd like to congratulate all the students that earned the award for their hard work and dedication and hope to see their success continue in the second semester. A big thank you to our partner, Papa Johns, for supporting our students' excellence.

Lorain County Alliance of Black School Educators Award

The Lorain County Alliance of Black School Educators held its 39th annual program and acknowledged all seventh through 12th-grade students of African-American descendance who have achieved academic excellence in the following areas during the first grading period: straight A’s, honor roll or merit roll; seniors who ranked in the top 5 percent and top 10 percent of their class; recognition on the PSAT; participated in College Credit Plus or Early College High School; and National Merit Scholarship finalist.

Congrats to Sopohmore, Gabrielle T., who was honored with the 'Straight A's' award! We are so proud of her achievement.

Horizon's Annual College & Career Fair

Our annual College and Career Fair was held today in our school gymnasium. 20 Colleges, Universities, Military Branches, and Health Representatives showed up to meet with our kids. Students asked amazing questions to representatives and recruiters during the event. The college representatives were friendly, informative, and took the time to answer all our students' questions.

This annual event is a great way to get our freshman, sophomores, and juniors to start thinking about their future. Most of our seniors have already committed to schools, but some may still be undecided or find an option they didn't know existed!
