Family Update 9/14/26
Week of Sept. 14, 2026 Family Update

Week of Sept. 14, 2026
Dear Skyline Students and Families,
It’s hard to believe we are already heading into Homecoming week! Next week is one of those special times at Skyline when our school spirit, traditions, and sense of community really come to life.
We have a full week of festivities planned, and we hope our students and families will join us in celebrating all that makes the Skyline community so special. From our daily spirit days and the Homecoming Pep Rally to the T. Wall Carnival, Homecoming Parade, football game, and dance, there are lots of opportunities to show your Skyline pride and make some great memories together.
One of the highlights of our week will be the 2nd Annual T. Wall Carnival on Thursday morning. More than 200 Skyline students will come together with approximately 150 students with special needs from across our community for a morning filled with games, activities, music, laughter, and, most importantly, connection. It is truly one of those events that reminds us what the Skyline Way is all about. We are so excited to welcome everyone to campus and celebrate together!
We also want to invite our entire community to join us for the Homecoming Parade on Friday, September 18, at 5:30 p.m. The parade is open to everyone and is always a fun way to kick off the evening before the Homecoming game. Food trucks will also be available on campus for families to enjoy.
Our Homecoming game against Huron High School kicks off at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. We are expecting a very large crowd, so please read the important attendance and stadium information below carefully, including the early gate opening, capacity limits, entry requirements, and no re-entry policy. We want everyone to have a safe, positive, and enjoyable experience.
And, of course, we want to see our Eagles showing their school spirit all week long! Whether you participate in the spirit days, join us for the T. Wall Carnival, attend the parade, cheer on our football team, or simply enjoy the energy around school, I hope you’ll find a way to be part of Homecoming 2026.
Thank you for helping us make Homecoming a celebration that reflects the best of the Skyline Way: community, connection, school pride, inclusion, and making memories together.
Go Eagles!

Semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program
On Wednesday, officials announced the names of more than 16,000 Semifinalists in the 72nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for about 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $24 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 95% of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
Over 1.2 million juniors in about 20,000 high schools entered the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
National Merit Scholarship winners of 2027 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join over 395,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

Skyline Homecoming 2026 - THIS WEEK!
Important Football Game Info:
Friday, September 18, is Skyline High School’s Homecoming game against Huron High School. Due to historically high attendance at this event, we anticipate reaching the stadium’s maximum capacity.
To help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, please plan to arrive early. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. Once the stadium reaches maximum capacity, admission will be closed, including for individuals who have purchased tickets in advance. Purchasing a ticket prior to the game does not guarantee admission, as attendance is based on the number of individuals who enter the stadium.
Gates will close at halftime. This is earlier than our normal practice due to the anticipated high attendance. There will also be no re-entry once you leave the stadium.
Admission & Entry
Skyline and Huron students may enter free of charge with a valid Student ID.
Middle school students must be accompanied by an adult and must purchase a ticket.
Huron students and guests should enter through the Northwest Gate near the baseball field.
No bags, outside food, or beverages will be permitted inside the stadium.
There will be no re-entry once you leave the stadium.
Stadium Expectations
For the safety of our students, spectators, and staff, sitting, standing, or playing on the grass hills is not permitted. This expectation will be strictly enforced by the Ann Arbor Police Department, security personnel, and AAPS Administration.
We appreciate your cooperation and partnership in helping us provide a safe, positive, and enjoyable Homecoming experience for our students, families, and community.

Skyline Athletics
Hello Families and Students,
We have our annual T. Wall carnival this week. We will need a lot of athlete support to run this event! Students please complete the google forms shared by Mrs. Bezeau during our Skytime announcements. Forms were also shared by Mrs.Sissoko in Schoology. Athletes please plan to bring any fun size sport related equipment that will help with the event. Also, anyone available to help set up Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm in the main gym is welcome to come!
For any athlete interested in applying to be a part of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, the application is here. Please turn in the application to Mrs. Sissoko, all applications are due at the end of September.
All students must be fully registered and have completed the pay to play fee through Rec & Ed. A sports physical is required as well. Below are some important links with a lot of information. Please do not hesitate to reach out to the athletic office if you have questions. Also, please check out the athletics website!
ATHLETE ATTENDANCE
Athletes are required to be in school a minimum of 3 class periods in order to participate in practice or competition each day. All coaches will be receiving an ineligible list of players daily. It is our expectation that coaches check this daily and exclude those players from practice or competition.
Any student new to Skyline and is in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade must complete the New Student Form and be approved by the athletic director before participating or trying out in any sport!
There is no parking at any time in our pickup/drop off loops!

Upcoming Testing - October
11th Grade Testing Is Around the Corner!
We are beginning to prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT, which will be administered at Skyline High School on Thursday, October 8, 2026 for our 11th-grade students. 9th, 10th and 12th graders will have a delayed start to the day, arriving @ 12:20pm.
The PSAT/NMSQT is an important opportunity for students to become familiar with the digital SAT experience, practice their test-taking skills, and, for eligible students, compete for recognition through the National Merit Scholarship Program.
📅 Important Date
Thursday, October 8, 2026
PSAT/NMSQT for 11th Grade Students
Students will also participate in a Digital Readiness Check during Skytime on September 30 to make sure they are able to log in successfully, be familiar with the testing platform and prepared for test day.
How Can Families Help?
A few simple steps can help students feel prepared:
Encourage your student to get a good night's sleep before testing.
Make sure they arrive at school on time and are ready for the testing day.
Encourage students to bring their charged school-issued MacBook as directed by Skyline.
Remind students to listen carefully to testing instructions and take their time.
Remind students to listen, read and get familiar with the information shared in the coming weeks so they're fully prepared
Encourage students to approach the assessment as an opportunity to practice, learn, and demonstrate what they know.
Additional information about the PSAT/NMSQT, including what students can expect on the assessment, is available through College Board's PSAT/NMSQT information.
Thank you for partnering with us as we prepare our students for a successful testing experience!
Nominate a Skyline Teacher for Michigan Teacher of the Year
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) opened the nomination window for the 2027-28 Michigan Teacher of the Year this past spring. The nomination window remains open until Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. MDE welcomes nominations from students, parents/guardians, coworkers, and school community members. Individuals wishing to nominate a teacher for this recognition are asked to complete the online form.
District newsletters and social media platforms serve as valuable channels to share the online form, providing an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of dedicated educators in your district. We encourage districts to consider including the nomination information provided (below the closing) in district communications.
MDE recognizes some districts and intermediate school districts have established processes to award local teachers of the year. If so, designated district representatives may email teacher nominations directly to MTOY@Michigan.gov. Please include teacher name, personnel identification code (PIC), email address, and school in which they are employed. An email verifying receipt will be sent within 48 hours. Nominations from districts will be accepted until September 23, 2026.
More information about the program is available on the Michigan Teacher of the Year webpage. Please contact the Office of Educator Excellence at MTOY@Michigan.gov with any questions regarding the program or nomination process. We genuinely appreciate your assistance in sharing this information with your district.

Action Needed: Education Benefit Forms for All Families Due October 1st
Please take a moment to complete the form and return it to your student’s school. The Education Benefits Form collects information needed to ensure the school receives state and federal funding for education programs. Without this information, our school could lose important funding for education programs that our students need. These supplemental grants and programs have the potential to offer supports and services for our students including, but not limited to:
· Instructional staff (ex. Reading Interventionists, Math Tutors, Academic & Behavior Aids)
· Teaching supplies and materials
· Counselors and Social Workers
· School Nurses
· Professional Learning for staff
· Parent and Community engagement supplies and activities
· Technology
Why is the school requesting financial information?
The Education Benefits Form determines eligibility of a student or household. The total count of eligible students is used to determine the funding amounts that will be made available to a school. The more forms returned the better.
What do I need to do?
Please complete the form linked below. Families only need to fill on ONE form, listing all their children.
What else might my student or household be eligible for?
Based on the information you provide on your Education Benefits Form, your child may qualify for other programs such as:
· Pay to play or Pay to Participate
· Programs that provide food support
· Programs that provide field trip support
· Programs that provide school supplies or assist with school fees
· Programs that provide holiday support
· Potential household support for cable and internet
If you have any questions, please contact bollingere@aaps.k12.mi.us at 734-994-2265.

Philosophy
The Ann Arbor Board of Education believes that regular and punctual attendance by students results in greater levels of student achievement in a safe, secure, and orderly school, in higher staff and student morale, and in better preparation for post-high school life.
An essential part of all education takes place through social interaction that one cannot learn from studying texts. While independent work and/or research is vital, it is equally important to hear lectures, participate in activities and discussions, be exposed to other peoples’ ideas, and work with non-print materials. For this reason, daily attendance and participating in class is crucial and will impact student performance positively.
Students and their parents/guardians should understand that excessive absences, whether excused or unexcused, might often drastically affect class grades. Successful students are seldom absent.
Extended Absence Form (3 days or more OR 1 or 2 days before/ after a school vacation/break)
Form must be turned in and signed by all teachers and SLC Administrator 5 days prior to the first day missed. Please download the Extended Absence Form by clicking HERE.
Procedures
Students are expected to be in class, punctual, and prepared to participate in the learning process every day. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential if students are to make use of the educational opportunities in high school.
Excused Absences
To excuse an absence a student’s parent/ guardian must notify the school of the student’s absence within 48 hours with an acceptable reason.
Parents/guardians may excuse absences only for the following reasons:
1. Personal illness
2. Illness of an immediate family member
3. Death of a family member or close friend
4. Verified medical or dental appointment
5. Verified legal proceedings
6. Emergency removal for administrative reasons
7. Suspension from school
8. Approved school-sponsored or school-related activity
11. Observance of a religious holiday
Additional Notes
The grade level administrator must pre-approve absences for family travel/college visits to allow for make-up privileges. Families are expected to completely fill out a “Request for Extended Absence” form and turn it in at the SLC level office in advance.
Once an extended absence is approved, the student has the responsibility to make the appropriate arrangements with his/her teachers.
When leaving during your scheduled school hours with permission, the student must check out at the student entrance CA desk.
Students may not be excused from class in order to remain in school to study for a test, go to the media center, complete make-up work, or attend some other in-school activity.
Students who arrive after the beginning of their school day or who return after checking out must arrive at the student entrance and present their school iD for entry.
Excused Absence Procedure
When reporting an absence, please be prepared to leave the following information:
1. Student’s name
2. I.D. Number
3. Grade Level
4. Date(s) and time(s) of absence
5. Reason for absence(s)
6. Your name and relationship to the student
Unexcused Absences
Unexcused absences are those absences where the student fails to attend class and the parent or guardian has not notified the school in accordance with the required attendance procedures.
Make-up Work
Teachers must allow students to make up work due to excused absences. Two days will be granted for the make-up of one day’s excused absence. Students are expected to take the initiative in asking teachers for make-up work.
Tardies (Excused and Unexcused)
Students have a responsibility to arrive on time. An unexcused tardy occurs when a student arrives after the bell rings without an acceptable excuse.
Consequences for unexcused tardiness will be in accordance with the provisions of the AAPS Student Rights and Responsibilities handbook and the Skyline Student and Family Handbook.
Parent Notification
The primary method of notification arrives through a computerized message system to notify families of unexcused absences; parents can monitor through Powerschool for real time attendance. Parents may call the appropriate SLC office for student attendance records if needed. The primary responsibility for maintaining good attendance belongs to students and their families.

Student ID Photo Update
HR Imaging will be back at Skyline on October 14, 2026, during the 1st trimester, for additional photo retakes.
Electronic ID Cards
We will also have an electronic ID card option available, which we strongly recommend for all students to pair with their hardcopy ID. Students with personal devices will be able to scan a QR code that can be downloaded and used as their school ID.
The electronic ID can be used for a variety of purposes, including:
Entering after-school events
Entering the school building during the school day for late arrivals
Providing identification when needed throughout the school day
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to resolve the photo-quality issues from Day 1!

Student & Family Handbook
Please Review the Student & Family Handbook
As we begin a new school year, we ask all students and families to take some time to read and review the Skyline High School Student & Family Handbook. The handbook contains important information about school expectations, policies, procedures, student responsibilities, attendance, academic guidelines, safety, and the many resources available to support our students. Taking the time to become familiar with this information will help ensure that everyone understands what is expected and knows where to turn when questions arise. Clear is Kind, and making sure our students and families have a shared understanding of our expectations is an important part of creating a safe, supportive, and successful school community. Please review the handbook together and reach out to us if you have any questions.
Traffic Flow
Please share this info with other family members or friends who may be picking-up or dropping-off students like you: THE SPEED LIMIT WHILE ON CAMPUS IS 10 MPH. Please drive slowly for the safety of all! Students arriving to school should be dropped off at the Student Entrance using the parent drop-off loop ONLY. Students will be required to present their student ID (physical or digital) upon entry to the building. Students who have already been called out and approved for early dismissal should be picked up at the parent pick-up loop at any time during the school day. The only time a student will be picked up at the main office is if a parent/guardian is coming in to pick up a student and this early release has not previously been called into the attendance line or front desk. Morning Arrival/Drop Off: PLEASE PACK YOUR PATIENCE and be kind! If you are turning into the parent drop-off loop, you should be in the left lane along the stadium. You should not be crossing over traffic to turn into the parent drop-off loop. The drop-off loop is ONE LANE ONLY! Students are exiting vehicles and we do not want cars driving past them as they are exiting their vehicles. There are barricades in the inner lane for a reason, please do not ignore them. We are doing our best to move people forward and to keep the line moving as quickly as possible. Please drive around other children how you would want others to drive around your child. The parent drop-off loop is a constantly moving line. We ask that you ALWAYS pull forward in the loop as far as possible and do not stop right in front of the school as this slows down the line and causes unnecessary delays. There is no parking and sitting in the loop. If you need to sit and wait for your child, we ask that you move to a parking spot near the baseball fields or tennis courts to wait for them there, not in the loop. When you arrive in the loop at drop-off in the morning, your child should be prepared to quickly grab their belongings and hop out of the vehicle as soon as you are able to come to a complete stop in the loop. This could occur at any spot in the loop, not only directly in front of the school. The line should constantly be moving forward for a continuous flow through. END OF THE DAY PICK UP: PLEASE PACK YOUR PATIENCE and be kind! If you are turning into the parent pick-up loop, you should be in the left lane along the stadium. You should not be crossing over traffic to turn into the parent pick-up loop. We understand that students come out at somewhat staggered times at dismissal. For this reason, we ask that you communicate with your child about their after-school plan. If they are coming directly out to the car at dismissal, please move forward as far as possible and continue moving forward as traffic moves. If they are not coming out right at the end of the day, please do not pull into the parent pick-up loop until your child is coming out and park in a parking spot near the baseball fields or tennis courts until they are ready to exit the school. So that we can allow those who have already picked up their students to exit, only at the end of the day, we will allow the inner lane after the end curve closest to the school to be used to pass cars that are still waiting on their child. Please drive slowly, use your turn signals, watch for merging traffic, and pay close attention to students as you exit the pick up loop. There will only be one lane of traffic exiting the pick-up loop. When exiting, you should remain in the left lane. For this plan to work safely and efficiently, it's essential that everyone adheres to the designated drop-off areas and traffic flow. Dropping off students in non-designated areas not only disrupts the traffic flow but also creates potential safety hazards for students walking in areas where pedestrian traffic is not expected. Do not drop students off in the student parking lot, this is not a student drop off location and creates dangerous traffic patterns that the space is not intended for. Our students consistently complain about parents dropping off in the student parking lot. Skyline has designed its traffic flow plan to optimize the use and safety of our roadways and parking areas. The road surrounding the stadium, baseball fields, tennis courts, and school will operate as a one-way route. Please refer to the diagram above for detailed traffic directions. Areas marked with blue arrows indicate one-way traffic, while sections with both blue and orange arrows are the only locations on campus where two-way traffic is permitted. The east side drop-off loop will continue to be used exclusively for parent drop-offs, and the west side loop will remain reserved for buses only. Please note that parking is prohibited in both loops at all times. A few years ago Mr. O, Payton, and Valencia made this short video to help you understand the traffic flow on campus. It states "2024 - 2025" at the beginning, but the video remains valid: Video linked here
Please keep in mind, that you are the model for our
future drivers!

Notes from Nurse Mary
Welcome to the 2026-2027 school year! My name is Mary Delis and I am entering my ninth year of school nursing and my second year at Skyline. I look forward to working with you and your students this school year.
Please reach out to me if you have any health updates or questions.
If your student requires medication or emergency medication (epi pens, albuterol inhaler, etc) to be kept at school, AAPS medication administration policy requires updated documentation each school year.
Please have Action Plans (Asthma, Food or Seizure) completed by your healthcare provider and submitted to me via email or in paper form.
If your student does not have a specific plan, please see links for AAPS order forms. I recommend that families choose the Self-Administration option for their students at the high school level. Exceptions may apply in some situations - students may not carry controlled substances under any circumstances. Please reach out to me if you have any concerns. I also recommend that students keep a copy of documentation with their self-carry medication at school.
