MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Franklin Students and Families,

We have had a wonderful first 3 days of school! Welcome back students and families!! I am very excited to be starting my fourth year as your proud principal. On Wednesday we welcomed both the class of 2027 and 2030 for a half day of orientation and connection.

This year we have the same phone free policy as last year. Students, some of you may need to go home and find your Yondr pouch from last year. Let us know if you need to buy a new one. On Monday during the grade level assemblies we will share more information about the Tardy Intervention Program, TIP, designed to help you arrive to all your classes on time especially after lunch. You can read more about it here.

Also, Flex/Tutorial is in the morning this year, not at the end of the day. Flex/Tutorial will be after 1st and 5th periods from 9:52-10:36am. All students are required to stay on campus to meet with teachers and attend school sponsored activities and events during that time.

We are excited to start the new school year with you! Reach out to us if you have any questions or need any help.

Let’s Go Lightning!

Dr. Z

SCHOOL INFORMATION SCHOOL INFORMATION

NEW: Temporary Tri-Met Detour

Due to construction at SE 50th & Division, Tri-Met's line 14 will not run on SE 50th Avenue between SE Powell and SE Hawthorne until September 4th. Instead, lines 14 and 71 will both run on SE 52nd Avenue between Powell and Hawthorne. For today and next week you can catch the lines 14 and 71 on SE 52nd Avenue.

NEW: Important Drop-Off and Pick-Up Guidelines

Franklin families, if you drive your students to and from school, please pay very close attention and be very cautious! Woodward gets extremely congested with cars and pedestrians in the mornings and afternoons. Please remember that students are NOT to be dropped off or picked up in the staff parking lots; we suggest that you find a spot about a block away that you consistently use for dropping off and picking up. It will cause you less stress and it will help with congestion and make it safer for students arriving on foot. Thank you!

NEW: Meet the School Nurse!

Hi all! I'm KT (they/them), and I amexcited to be returning as the school nurse at Franklin. The best way to contact me is by email at ksimeon@pps.net or by phone 503-916-5140, ext. 84352. As we get settled in, this is a reminder that if a student has a medical need or takes medication during the school day, including emergency medication, there are necessary forms to fill out. If you have access to a printer, you can find the forms here and bring them in. I'm excited for a great school year and looking forward to meeting those of you I haven't yet!

NEW: Picture Makeup Day

Students who attended Back-to-School Prep Days had their photo taken for their ID card and for the yearbook. Students who did not attend BTS Prep Days will get their photo taken during the school day on Tuesday, September 1st, 8:30am-2:30pm. This is when they will get their ID card which also serves as a Tri-Met bus pass.

NEW: Class Contributions and Fees

Families who can are asked to help contribute funds to classes and programs each year. Our operational budget does not cover all course supplies and costs, so we rely on contributions from families to enhance the classroom experience for students.

Classes that have optional contributions associated with them are listed on SchoolPay. Donations and payments for athletic fees, yearbooks, The Post subscriptions, uniforms, library fees, sports passes, etc. can also be made through SchoolPay.

NEW: Attendance

Attendance is taken for every class period that meets on a given day. Please plan to report and excuse all absences in the way that best suits you:

  • Call the attendance office at 503-916-3543
  • Email franklinattend@pps.net
  • Have your student bring a note to the attendance office (located in the main office)
  • For full-day absences, you can self-report on ParentVUE (this does not work for tardies or partial-day absences)

For attendance-related concerns, contact:

Daisy Jimenez-Antonio, Student Attendance Coach

Email: djimenezantonio@pps.net

Phone: 503-916-5140, ext 84152 (Hablo Español)

Kirstin Bill, Attendance Secretary

NEW: Cell Phone Policy

For the 2026-2027 school year, Franklin will be a phone-free space for all students to foster a more focused and engaging learning environment using a program called Yondr.

While we believe that phones have great utility, we have found that learning and social behavior improve significantly when students are fully engaged with their teachers and classmates. Along with our belief that school climate benefits from a phone-free environment, Portland Public Schools passed a new district-wide cell phone policy requiring students to have their phones away all day. In order to meet the requirements of the district policy, every student will secure their phone and smartwatch in a personally assigned lockable Yondr pouch upon arrival at school. At the end of the school day, students will have access to unlocking stations to open the pouches. Students are responsible for bringing their assigned Yondr pouch to/from school daily. Limited exceptions will be based on specific medical needs.

The cost for the initial purchase and startup for Yondr pouches is sizable. We have added the cost of the Yondr pouches to the list of suggested donations and we will be collecting donations all summer for this cause. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to help cover the start-up costs, please use this link.

NEW: Do You Need a Locker?

Any student who wishes to have a locker can request one in the main office. No students have been automatically assigned a locker this year.

NEW: Trivory

Every student and family member should download the Trivory app to their phones. We use Trivory to send out immediate important school information about activities, clubs and athletics. This is also a great resource for Tri-Met bus schedules and to see the daily bell schedule at your fingertips. Visit trivory.com/franklin to download the app today. Trivory is completely free and you can control your own notification preferences.

NEW: FLEX

Students have their first two Flex days on Wednesday, September 9th & Thursday, September 10th.

What is Flex? Flex, formerly known as Tutorial, is time set aside after 1st/5th period on certain days for students to check in with teachers, get help, catch up on assignments, retake tests, etc. Teachers will communicate their availability and Flex location to students. Please encourage your students to use this time wisely and not treat it as an early release.

A/B Flex Schedule:

Period 1/5: 8:30-9:52am

Flex: 9:52-10:36am

Period 2/6: 10:41am-12:07pm

Period 3/7: 12:45-2:07pm
