SST16 PBIS Consultant: Missy Baker

I am here to support 24 Southeastern Ohio School Districts. PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) is an implementation framework for maximizing the selection and use of evidence-based prevention and intervention practices along a multi-tiered continuum that support the academic, social and emotional competence of all students.

PBIS Fact Sheet

PBIS: Circle Model PBIS: Circle Model

The systems, practices, and data you use to build and evaluate your PBIS implementation are like headers in an outline. The items on the TFI give you your subheads. From there, it’s up to you to fill in the details. Your systems reflect your school’s culture and support the adults in the building to do their best work. Your practices build on your students’ strengths and values to help them find success at school. Your data improves your decision-making and holds you accountable for making your implementation work for everyone.

Ohio Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Professional Development Requirements

Ohio law and rule require districts to implement a positive behavior intervention and support framework on a system-wide basis. To implement a schoolwide framework effectively it is essential to provide professional development to student personnel.

Ohio districts will provide professional development on PBIS to student personnel at least every three years. Professional development can be provided by a building or district PBIS Leadership Team or an appropriate state, regional, or national source in collaboration with the building or district positive behavior intervention and support leadership team. The professional development must include the following topics:

• An overview of positive behavior intervention and support;

• The process for teaching behavioral expectations;

• Data collection;

• Implementation of positive behavior intervention and support with fidelity;

• Consistent systems of feedback to students for acknowledgment of appropriate behavior and corrections for behavior errors; and

• Consistency in discipline and discipline referrals.

Please use this link to read the specifics of the PBIS professional development requirements.

Anti-Bullying Supports for Peers: Be An Upstander
Be an Upstander
is a video for use with middle- and high-school students. It demonstrates strategies that can turn bystanders (persons not directly involved in the bullying incident) into Upstanders, those who can help diffuse a bullying situation.

Ohio Learns 360

Ohio’s PBS stations, through a partnership with the Ohio Department of Education, are working with local summer and after-school programs to address disruptions to learning caused during the COVID-19 pandemic. WOUB and the WOUB Learning Lab are excited to be a part of this initiative!

Called Ohio Learns 360, this new initiative will provide families, along with after-school and summer programs with PBS resources, including

standards-based curriculum and materials

virtual field trips

interactive video programs

community events

and more, all designed to accelerate student learning and support the state’s most vulnerable learners in kindergarten through fifth grade.

Empower Ohio’s parents and caregivers with tools to support their young learners in school and at home.

Connect Ohio’s kids to the best — museums, science centers, nature organizations, and the arts.

Check out this spreadsheet for monitoring risk indicators for attendance, behavior, and courses/academics. This spreadsheet includes tabs for 9-12 grades, but could be modified for your building.

What are your current Tier 1-3 interventions for attendance, behavior, and courses/academics?

Use the matrix to catalog interventions and supports. Include availability - how

many students can be served, details – description of intervention’s focus, evidence base or additional

notes.
