Pacific Intermediate Newsletter
March 2023
A Word From Our Principal~Mr. Agee
Pacific Intermediate Families,
Second trimester has finished, and we are entering the last third of the year. I will spend the next few weeks reviewing student grades and sending additional information about either required attendance at summer school or retention.
Summer school registration is now open for the 2023 school year. The enrollment period will be from February 28th through April 3rd, so sign up today to guarantee your spot. Students going into grades 5 and 6 will attend Pacific Intermediate. Students who will be entering 7th grade will attend Riverbend. All students who are required to attend summer school for credit recovery will be hosted at Riverbend, but students should still register for summer school as normal.
We have an upcoming Pie at PI night on March 14th. We will run the event from 3-4:45 and we would like to invite our families to join us for a slice of pie, and shop at the book fair. If you have additional questions about PI night, please reach out to Mrs. Meyers at bmeyers@mvr3.k12.mo.us.
Spring break will be March 20th-24th. During this week, school offices will be closed and staff will be unavailable. We hope students take the time to relax, turn in any missing work, and enjoy the outdoors.
An updated copy of our school dashboard can be found at https://www.mvr3.k12.mo.us/o/pi/page/building-goals

Can you believe it is already the third trimester?! This year has really flown by quickly! We have been learning about the proper way to capitalize and format titles. We have also been working on non-fiction text structures. Ask your student if they can name all 5. As we begin the last trimester we will be working on poetry, dramatic literature (plays), and doing research to produce writing and a presentation.
Science and Social Studies
Science: Students continue to learn about Earth's place in our universe. As we move through the final trimester of the school year, we will complete our Physical Science unit. Students will learn through inquiry labs using our Mystery Science curriculum.
Social Studies: We will continue moving through US history with concepts related to WWI, The Great Depression, and WWII. We will examine the roles of various Americans during each of these events. We will also analyze how each event affected life in America.

6TH GRADE READING TEACHER
Reading~Mr. McMahon
Hello-
Hopefully, the coldest weather is behind us and we can look forward to the first signs of Spring! As always please continue to look for our weekly emails and to check your student's grades in SIS. Please make sure coats and hoodies are getting washed. Also, check with your child to see if they need any supplies (colored pencils, markers, glue sticks, pencils, and pens). If you need anything please, let us know.
English:
In 6th Grade English, students are outlining their argumentative essays, in which they determine whether or not self-driving cars should be allowed on the roads. Students will research the topic and find text evidence to support their opinions. The next steps in this process will be for students to type their essays and begin editing their work.
Math:
6th-grade regular math classes are learning to write equations in one and two variables and how to solve simple equations. The advanced math classes have started in the 7th-grade book and will be adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positive and negative numbers. They will finish the year with the first 5 chapters of the 7th-grade book.
Social Studies:
Social Studies will discover classical Greek and Roman Civilizations over the next two months. The knowledge and politics of Greece and Rome directly impact how our democracy works in the United States. Students will understand the connection between classical civilizations' history and our own society's history.
Science:
We are wrapping up our Matter unit and will have a mini-unit on the Earth's Surface. We will finish out the year with the Ecology Unit. If your child is absent, all assignments are posted in Google Classroom so they can keep caught up.
Reading:
For the next six weeks reading classes will be enjoying the novel, Long Way from Chicago.
We will incorporate elements of fiction, figurative language, and vocabulary. The students always enjoy our novel units. It is a great way for the whole class to work towards a common goal.
Counselor's Corner~Ms. Diamond
The month of March will be busy. Your child's Trimester 2 report card will be emailed on Friday, March 3rd. Congratulations, in advance, to those students with good grades. Your parents and PI are proud of you. To students struggling with grades, do not give up. Success can happen through effort and change.
Last month Fifth-graders increased their awareness of "Jobs, Careers and Personal Values". Students completed a short survey answering questions of things they like to do. These answers were then matched to career categories for exploration. Students explored their top categories and read about occupations in each category with a brief description of occupational duties. Sixth-graders reviewed and practiced setting goals and creating plans to achieve goals, since this is an important step to success. We took this knowledge and discussed self-management and time management as a tool to reaching goals. Students were asked to identify time wasters which could be reduced and/or replaced with more productive activities to help them reach their goals. Additionally, Sixth- graders received a presentation from Riverbend's Guidance Counselors on Seventh- grade class elective options, and life at Riverbend Middle School. This will help them as they transition grade levels and buildings. Students tentatively registered for Seventh- grade classes.
This month Fifth- graders will be given a presentation on what to expect in Sixth- grade, discussing similarities and differences. Students will also be registering for Sixth-grade elective options and band. This will help students be better prepared for the transition to Sixth- grade and feel more comfortable with the move. Additionally, CHADS Coalition for Mental Health will deliver a one-day program to Fifth-graders on March 10th called "Empathy and Emotion Management" to help students to become familiar with understanding different emotions and how to process them in positive healthy ways. Sixth- grade students will have a lesson dealing with emotion management, coping mechanisms and working towards resilience.
Have a great Spring Break. Enjoy time with your family.
Sincerely,
Ms. Diamond
