JULY 2026
We are a diverse community of families, students, and staff who take pride in our schools, contribute positively to society, and prepare students for lifelong success.
A Message from Superintendent Dr. McCollum
As we move through the summer, Michigan City Area Schools is preparing for another successful school year while continuing to plan for the future of our district.
In June, the Michigan City Area Schools Board of Trustees approved a resolution to place a proposed operating referendum on the November 3, 2026 ballot. Like many school districts across Indiana, MCAS is facing long-term financial challenges caused by changes to Indiana's school funding system, declining enrollment, property tax caps, and rising operating costs.
This proposal did not happen overnight. For the past several years, our district has carefully reviewed operations, reduced expenses, reorganized staffing, and made thoughtful decisions to responsibly manage taxpayer resources while protecting educational opportunities for our students. That work continues today.
I invite you to join us on Wednesday, July 23, at Michigan City High School for our first community information meeting, where we will explain the district's financial situation, discuss the proposed operating referendum, and answer your questions. If you are unable to attend, additional community meetings will be held throughout the fall.
You can also visit our referendum webpage to view meeting dates, learn more about the district's finances, use the tax impact calculator, and find answers to frequently asked questions.
My hope is that every member of our community has the information needed to make an informed decision this November. I encourage you to read through this month's newsletter, visit our website, ask questions, and stay engaged throughout the process.
Thank you for your continued support of Michigan City Area Schools and the students we are privileged to serve. If you have questions or would like additional information, please don't hesitate to contact me by clicking here.
Sincerely,
Dr. Wendel McCollum
Superintendent

Rotary Club Fundraiser Supports Growing MCHS Marching Band
On June 25, community members gathered at Gill Field for the Rotary Club of Michigan City's Quarters for Change fundraiser, demonstrating how small donations can make a big impact. Members of the Michigan City High School Marching Band and its directors joined volunteers in laying a quarter mile of quarters around the track while visiting with supporters throughout the afternoon.
Thanks to the generosity of the Michigan City community, more than $1,600 was raised, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Michigan City High School Marching Band. Now serving more than 73 student musicians, the marching band continues to grow each year. Support from events like Quarters for Change helps provide the students with uniforms, equipment, and the resources they need to perform.
Michigan City Area Schools is grateful to the Rotary Club of Michigan City, event sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who contributed to the fundraiser’s success. Your continued support helps strengthen opportunities for our students.

Strategic Plan Update: Summer Connections

The newsletter highlights the progress made across our strategic pillars. From classroom success to new initiatives and community partnerships, the impact of this work is being seen across our schools. We invite our community to take a closer look at the progress and stay connected as we continue moving forward together.
BACK TO SCHOOL REMINDERS
Beginning with the 2026-2027 school year, MCAS will have new expectations for students’ use of personal electronic devices during the school day, in order to comply with a new Indiana law. Devices such as cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, tablets, gaming devices, and personal laptops must remain off and stored in a backpack or locker during the school day. This will apply from arrival until dismissal, including passing periods and lunch.
“We’re hopeful that this new law will have a positive impact on learning and the overall environment by cutting down on distractions,” says MCAS Assistant Superintendent Kristi Davis.
Students will be encouraged to leave their devices at home whenever possible. Exceptions may be made for documented medical needs, IEP or Section 504 accommodations, or emergencies.
Additional information will be shared with MCAS families before the start of the 2026-27 school year. We appreciate your partnership as we implement this new statewide requirement.
