Safety Week will take place at Leyden the week of September 2. The drills practiced during the week meet state requirements and help Leyden students and staff know what to expect should an emergency arise. Please note that there may be a visible presence from the first responders during the drills.

We recognize that running drills, particularly an active threat drill, may prompt many different feelings. Students who may have concerns or need additional support during this week should reach out to the Deans office.

Parent University will be held on Saturday, September 13, and is one of the biggest events for families all year. It’s well attended and for good reason: it offers more than a dozen sessions to support parents as they help their child find success during and after high school. Topics include college applications, financial aid, student motivation, behaviors, grading practices, mental health, and career options, pathways and programs. Sessions are offered in English, Spanish and Ukrainian.

In addition to the session content, each year two scholarships are awarded to parents in attendance. This scholarship is applied to their child’s postsecondary plan upon graduation.

Leyden Parent University will take place at West Leyden High School (1000 N. Wolf Road) from 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. for all Leyden parents and guardians of students in grades 8 - 12. (Check-in begins at 8:15 a.m.) This event is for parents and guardians only, from both East and West, and we kindly ask that children not be in attendance. Lunch will be provided. Space is limited, registration is required.

Last chance: Free heart screenings for students Last chance: Free heart screenings for students

Leyden is pleased to partner with Young Hearts for Life® (YH4L) to offer all Leyden High School students a free, potentially life-saving ECG screening, on Tuesday, August 26, at East and Thursday, August 28, at West. These screenings are optional, offered at no charge and require advanced parent/guardian authorization. Parents/Guardians will receive information via email at the start of the 2025-26 school year with the required authorization form.

YH4L, the largest ECG screening program in the United States, will provide a free heart screening called an electrocardiogram (ECG) to identify high school students at risk for Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD). More than 60 young adults die each week in the United States from SCD. Since 2006, YH4L has screened over 300,000 students and has identified more than 3,100 with previously undiagnosed heart conditions.

A simple, painless, and non-invasive ECG can detect approximately 70% of the heart conditions that are associated with SCD, while a pre-participation physical can only detect 4% of these conditions. The false positive rate for our program is less than 2%. Additional evaluation and testing by a student’s physician may be recommended.

  • Students’ confidentiality, privacy, and individual modesty will be respected throughout all aspects of the program;

  • Students are given a designated time by the school to come to the screening area;

  • Trained volunteers attach electrodes to the students’ chest and limbs in preparation for the test;

  • Clothing is not removed;

  • The ECG machine monitors the electrical activity of the heart and prints out the information about heart rate and a trained cardiologist then interprets the printed test;

  • Student results are available 2-3 weeks after the screening via a secure link that is sent to the parent/guardian email;

  • Results are NOT shared with the school or district.

Leyden Marching Band on CBS News

The Leyden High School Marching Band had a special moment in the spotlight on Friday, August 15, when they performed live on CBS News Chicago during the late afternoon newscast. The band was invited to help celebrate the behind-the-scenes heroes of the station as they marked their retirement. One of the retirees had long wished for a marching band sendoff and Leyden made that dream come true with a lively and heartwarming performance, bringing music, smiles, and a whole lot of school spirit to the CBS studio!
