Welcome to 6th Grade!
Outdoor Education - September 9th - 11th
As the excitement builds for the start of the next school year, we want to share some thrilling news about a fantastic opportunity awaiting our rising 6th graders: the Stone Canyon Outdoor Education experience!
This immersive program, taking place Wednesday, 9/9/26 - Friday, 9/11/26, is a cornerstone of the transition to middle school and provides an invaluable opportunity for students to learn, grow, and bond outside the traditional classroom setting. At Stone Canyon, students will engage in a variety of hands-on activities designed to foster:
Teamwork and Collaboration: Through group challenges and shared experiences, students will learn the importance of working together to achieve common goals.
Environmental Awareness: Exploring the natural beauty of Stone Canyon will spark curiosity and deepen their understanding of the environment and our role in it.
Personal Growth and Resilience: Stepping outside their comfort zones with activities like zip line and archery will build confidence and problem-solving skills.
New Friendships and Community Building: Living and learning alongside their classmates and teachers creates lasting connections and strengthens our school community.
More detailed information about the Stone Canyon Outdoor Education experience, including packing lists and permission slips, will be shared with you in a couple weeks. Registration is live online here and will be open through August 24th. Additionally, you will now see the payment for our trip in MySchoolBucks. If you believe your family may qualify for free and reduced lunch, please see Marie in the office to discuss payment options. Homeroom teachers also have more information on scholarship opportunities.
In the meantime, we encourage you to talk with your child about this exciting adventure and the possibilities it holds. It's a chance for them to embrace new challenges, discover their strengths, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Curious about the thrilling adventures awaiting at Stone Canyon? Dive into their website and discover all the excitement in store!
Language Arts
Mrs. Bruce
Hello! My name is Tracy Bruce and I am excited to be your child's English Language Arts (ELA) teacher. In ELA, we are learning our routines for whole group instruction and independent work. Some of our focus has been on word work, independent reading, and responding to our class read aloud, Love That Dog by Sharon Creech.
Soon, we will take our beginning-of-the-year writing assessment. Following that, we will have our first lesson using our SRSD (Self-Regulated Strategy Development) strategies using the same texts and writing prompt from their writing assessment.
Please join me this year in creating a strong parent-teacher partnership. Classroom culture is always a priority for me. I aim to build an environment where my students feel safe respected, proud, determined, curious, and excited to learn! I know we are going to have an AMAZING year together!
Math
Mrs. Suppi
It was wonderful having students back in the classroom this week! We spent our first few days getting to know one another, establishing classroom expectations, and beginning to build a positive math community where every student feels valued, supported, and confident in taking on new challenges.
Next week, we will begin our first math unit focused on statistics and data. Students will collect, organize, and interpret data using a variety of graphs and displays while learning how to analyze information and draw meaningful conclusions. Throughout the year, we'll continue to build strong problem-solving skills, embrace productive struggle, and recognize that mistakes are an important part of learning. I'm excited to begin this mathematical journey with your students!
Science/Social Studies
Mr. Bodily
Next week will be social studies focused. We will be exploring the origins, structures, and functions of the United States Government.
Message from Mr. Halley
Mr. Halley would like to invite you to join the choir at Cherokee Trail Elementary. The choir program here at CTE is booming and last year it had over 80 members! All choir students get a choir shirt, the opportunity to perform the national anthem before a Colorado Rockies game-they get to be on the field at Coors Field for this! We also have two big concerts in the CTE gym for friends and family in the winter and spring semester.
The choir is open for students in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade and meets in the morning from 7:40-8:15 Tuesdays and Thursdays. You only need to attend one day a week but you can attend both if possible. You can find the dates for the rehearsals and performances for our winter semester HERE
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Mr. Halley ghalley@dcsdk12.org and thank you for supporting the arts here at Cherokee Trail Elementary.
