DeSTEMber at LES

"DeSTEMber" is a month long celebration of all things related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics! This DeSTEMber, LES staff will promote the study of STEM in their classrooms throughout the month by incorporating coding and other STEM websites and activities into daily instruction. We will highlight biographical information of historical figures and current contributors to the field.

What can you do at home to support DeSTEMber?

Notice and wonder with your child! One of the most impactful ways you can support STEM education at home, is by noticing natural phenomenon in the world, asking and listening to questions, encourage STEM related discussion and exploration, and look for areas to incorporate STEM into daily routines like cooking and reading. Here are some resources for you!

Celebrating 100 Years at LES

The LES Parents and Teachers have a long history of working collaboratively for the betterment of our school and students. We appreciate all the care and support our LES PTO provides which comes in many forms including grants for materials and assemblies, playground equipment and painting, meals for staff, appreciation gifts for staff, parties, and so much more! Here is an article about how the LES PTA (at the time) honored staff members and PTA members on their retirement.

Family Engagement

Want to engage your child in a fun and academically based activity? Try a scavenger hunt! Educators often use scavenger hunts to review skills, focus attention, foster cooperative learning opportunities, notice and note, observe and wonder, and more. You can use a scavenger hunt at home to do the same. Here are a few fun articles which outline various types of scavenger hunts you can try, but remember, the most important thing about a scavenger hunt is learning and having fun together!

Second Step lesson focus on Identifying Feelings and Building Empathy Second Step lesson focus on Identifying Feelings and Building Empathy

Second Step is our school-wide social-emotional learning program. This month, we focus on identifying feelings, in ourselves and our classmates, and using this information to develop empathy. Empathy is feeling or understanding what someone else is feeling. When we have empathy for one another, it helps us to act in kind and respectful ways - which helps us to make and keep friends.

Students LOVE the songs that we sing in this unit! Click the image below to listen to "The Feelings Song" and see if you can help your child remember the many ways that we show our feelings.
