February is a full month of traditions that includes Chinese New Year, Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day, President's Day, Black History month, and more.
For us, these special days are traditions passed down from year to year. Our teaching may highlight our past U.S. presidents and honor the history of our African Americans. We may have Valentine parties and make note of whether or not the groundhog saw his shadow.
However, when you are not from the U.S., it can be confusing to both students and parents. Even if you are from this country, do your students really know why we celebrate?
As holidays or special occasions arise throughout the year, make a point to share the history. Below are some resources for holidays and social-emotional learning. After all, it is the month of "love," so let's be mindful that some of our students are struggling.
