GAPS Libraries Resource Update
September 25, 2026
Get ready for this year's reading challenge, starting October 1st!
We came VERY VERY CLOSE to meeting our reading challenge last year, and this year we're starting a little earlier, so we know we can do it!
All students (and staff!) logging reading minutes will be automatically enrolled in our districtwide reading challenge, beginning October 1st.
Benny the Beanstack bean will be visiting schools this year to encourage students to read! Benny will start in the Memorial and South Shore libraries to congratulate those students on logging so many reading minutes last year, and will move around the district to visit students throughout the year.
TEACHERS: interested in learning more about how to easily use Beanstack for reading engagement in your classroom and setting up class or school-level challenges? There are 2 short introductory sessions available virtually on October 6: session 1 from 3:30-4:00 and session 2 from 4:15-4:45. Sign up here. We hope to see you there!

Two Centuries of Progress Are Colliding with a Decade of Doubt
Democracy has had a challenging decade by most scorecards. Yet roughly half the world’s countries are still governed democratically, making it humanity’s most widespread system for giving ordinary people a voice in how they are governed. Both things can be true at once, and that contradiction is worth a closer look.
Eleanor Roosevelt: From First Lady to Human Rights Leader
Eleanor Roosevelt expanded the role of first lady, using her position to advocate for civil and human rights and to travel on behalf of President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II. After F..D.R’s death in 1945, President Harry Truman appointed her to the first U.S. delegation to the United Nations. Roosevelt went on to chair the U.N. Commission on Human Rights and helped guide the international effort to draft the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948. This short video examines how Roosevelt’s work after the White House extended her influence and helped establish a blueprint for future first ladies. Lesson plan and resources included.
