Principal's Message - Building Excellence Together
Dear MMK Families,
What an exciting week we have ahead! As we step into December, I'm filled with gratitude for the incredible momentum our Owl community is building together.
This week, you'll notice our newsletter celebrating November's outstanding achievements—students earning Academic and Attendance Awards, GRIT recognitions from PreK through 12th grade, and remarkable staff members who embody our commitment to student growth. These celebrations aren't just about numbers and accolades. They represent something deeper: students who show up every day, persist through challenges, and support one another. That's the culture we're building.
This Saturday, December 6th, join us at Kiwanis Christmas Town at 5:00 PM! Our OWL cheerleaders and transportation team are ready to represent our school with spirit and pride. Bring your signs, wear your green and white, and help us show Mason County what OWL excellence looks like. Community support like yours makes a real difference in how our students see themselves and their place in our school family.
As we head into the final three weeks before winter break, I encourage you to have conversations at home about what GRIT means, celebrate your child's achievements—big and small—and stay connected through our website and social media.
Thank you for being partners in this journey.

🦉 OWL Pride on Parade! Join Us at Christmas Town 🎄
Mark Your Calendars for Saturday, December 6th!
We're thrilled to announce that our Mary M. Knight OWLS will once again take flight in the Kiwanis Christmas Town Parade this Saturday, December 6th at 5:00 PM!
Last year, our amazing MMK Cheerleaders and Transportation Department represented our school with such excellence that they brought home awards—and this year, we're ready to show our OWL pride once more! (Be sure to check out the photos from last year's parade included in this newsletter—our students and staff truly shined!)
Why This Matters:
This parade is more than just a festive tradition—it's an opportunity for our small but mighty school community to show Mason County what OWLS are all about: spirit, pride, and excellence. When our students see the community cheering them on, it reinforces that they are valued members of something special.
How You Can Support:
- Line the parade route and cheer loudly for our OWLS!
- Bring signs, wear school colors, and help us create a sea of support
- Take photos and videos to share memories with our participants
- Spread the word to friends and family throughout the community
Let's come together as the MMK family and show everyone what rural school pride looks like! We can't wait to see our OWLS represent with excellence once again.
Go OWLS! 🦉
Celebrating Excellence: November Secondary Awards Assembly
What an incredible month of achievement at Mary M. Knight! Our November secondary awards assembly was a powerful reminder of the dedication, resilience, and academic commitment our students demonstrate every day. I am proud to share the outstanding accomplishments of our Owls.
Recognizing Academic Success and Dedication
This month, we celebrated students across three distinctive award categories, each highlighting important aspects of student success. The Wise OWL Award recognizes students who maintained passing grades throughout November, demonstrating their commitment to academic growth and learning. The Steadfast OWL Award honors students who showed exceptional attendance and punctuality with no unexcused absences or tardies for the entire month. And our highest recognition, the Peak of OWL Excellence Award, goes to students who achieved both milestones—proving that consistency in attendance and dedication to academics go hand in hand.
Wise OWL Award Recipients (All Passing Grades): In 7th grade, congratulations to Camryn Koch and Kane Dunnington. Our 8th graders include Katelynn Blanchard, Peyton Gonzales, Madilyn Horn, Kheiron Sjolie, Layla Thomas, and Layla VanBoven. In 9th grade, we recognize Peyton Hughes, Cash King, Tarin Lovejoy, Joe Seymour, and Dayton Triggs. Our 10th grade honorees are Gabe Buck, Natalie Hammel-North, Bleyden Jenkins, Brandon Lawrence, and Caleb Moran. In 11th grade, Hayden Hughes and Gabe Walters earned this distinction. And finally, our 12th grade Wise Owls are Nolan Baughman, Cloey Fletcher, Maelynn Nygaard, Hayden Roberts, and Chase Tupper.
Steadfast OWL Award Recipients (Perfect Attendance): Our 7th grade steadfast students include Jaxson Blanchard, Riley Coleman, Josepy Day, Kane Dunnington, Kylie Fischer, Macy Masteller, Elsie Richards, Alaina Tinoco, and Preston Vogland. In 8th grade, Katelyn Blanchard, Bash Buck, Yohan Carrillo, Riot Coleman, Madilyn Horn, Liam Jones, and Layla Thomas demonstrated perfect attendance. Our 9th graders are Harley Garcia, Cash King, Alivia McNair, Joe Seymour, and Dillon Smith. The 10th grade steadfast students are Gabe Buck, Bleyden Jenkins, Brandon Lawrence, Mylee Mezzell, Caleb Moran, Myles Thompson, and Nic Wulf. GRIT Student of the Month Recognitions
Beyond academic achievement, we also celebrated students who exemplify our GRIT and OWL expectations through their character, perseverance, and service to others.
Layla VanBoven (8th grade) was recognized for her consistent dedication to improvement and community. Layla seeks out help to improve her school work and makes appropriate corrections to meet standards. More importantly, she is always willing to help others with both academic and emotional support, making her a great contributor to the 8th grade class.
Noland Baughman (12th grade) demonstrates the power of resilience and positive attitude. His innate persistence allows him to push beyond the boundaries others place on him. Even when life knocks him down or frustrations arise, he gets back up with greater determination than before. Because of this resilience, Noland is beginning Running Start next semester, is well on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout, and is on track to graduate this spring.
Tarin Lovejoy (9th grade) showed outstanding determination and resilience by stepping up at the last minute to support the senior class and PTO Concessions when we were short-staffed. When all available seniors were busy with other responsibilities, Tarin volunteered without hesitation to fill a critical gap. His willingness to take on this unexpected challenge shows a strong commitment to productive struggle, effort, and persistence in service of his school community.
Amberlynn Gutierrez Temertizo (7th grade) is a quiet student who diligently works through her assignments with quiet tenacity. Even through tough topics, she has demonstrated persistence, GRIT, and a will to succeed.
Colton Gage-Brix (10th grade) is doing an outstanding job in Math Lab! He has already passed 40 skills this semester and is on pace to exceed 50. When he hits a challenge, he doesn't give up—he looks back at his errors, learns from them, and makes corrections. He is also a positive presence in class, encouraging his classmates and helping explain ideas when they ask.
Celebrating Our Staff: Willingness with Resilience
This month's staff recognition theme celebrated Willingness with Resilience, honoring educators who demonstrate perseverance and adaptability in supporting student success. We are proud to recognize two exceptional staff members.
Ms. Bingham is our November Staff Award winner. Students recognized her unwavering commitment to their learning and growth, particularly in how she helps them develop independence and problem-solving skills. One student captured her approach perfectly, noting that "Ms. Bingham is very dedicated to helping students learn, keeps trying with them until they understand, helps them but doesn't do the work for them. She is good at keeping everyone on task and respectful while still keeping things fun in the classroom." Another student powerfully stated that she "Helps You Learn Through Struggle," directly connecting her teaching style to our core values. Ms. Bingham's ability to balance rigor with support, to push students while making them feel capable, and to maintain a respectful yet fun learning environment makes her truly deserving of this recognition.
Mr. Kerr received Honorable Mention for demonstrating resilience across multiple demanding roles. Students appreciate the many hats he wears and the dedication he brings to each role. As one student noted, "he is always a great teacher and has to juggle being the football coach, the sports director, and a teacher." Students also recognized his supportive teaching approach and celebrated that "he got us to the championship game"—a testament to his persistence and refusal to give up on his team even when facing tough competition. Mr. Kerr's ability to maintain high expectations across multiple contexts while staying calm, supportive, and positive makes him an excellent example of willingness with resilience.
Congratulations to all our award recipients! These recognitions reflect the positive culture we are building together at Mary M. Knight—a culture where effort matters, persistence pays off, and every student has the opportunity to soar. Thank you to our families for supporting your students' commitment to excellence, and thank you to our staff for inspiring greatness every day.

🌟 CELEBRATING OUR NOVEMBER ELEMENATARY STAFF MEMBERS OF THE MONTH 🌟
Celebrating Our Staff: November Award Winners
There are moments in a school day that happen quietly—when a student needs help finding the right bus, when a child needs supplies or extra clothes, when a scraped knee needs an ice pack and a kind word. There are also moments that happen in the classroom—when a student struggles with a challenging concept, when learning feels hard, when persistence is required to break through to understanding. These moments matter. And at Mary M. Knight School, they don't go unnoticed.
This month, our students recognized three exceptional educators who embody dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to student success.

The attributes include keeping trying with every student, staying positive when things go wrong, helping students learn through struggle, making work hard and doable, and supporting other staff through challenges.
Ms. Bingham exemplifies these qualities in exceptional ways. Students recognized her unwavering commitment to their learning and growth, particularly in how she helps them develop independence and problem-solving skills.

Ms. Bingham understands that true learning happens when students work through challenges, and she creates the conditions for that growth to occur.

Charlette Hammond (3rd Grade) is a very hard worker who takes each assignment and does it to the best of her ability. Wyatt Bartell (3rd Grade) is very helpful in the library, shows great problem-solving skills when working on a task, and is always looking for ways to be helpful. Keep up the good job, Wyatt!
Intermediate and Upper Grades: Rising to Academic Challenges
Becky Fischer (4th Grade) showed exceptional GRIT during after-school tutoring by asking other members of the group to stop messing around so she could focus on her learning. She finished her work before anyone else, proving that when you focus and try your best, you can do hard things!
Jaxx Coleman (5th Grade) has shown great growth over the last couple of weeks, working hard to complete tasks, helping others when he can, and being a team player at recess. Way to go, Jaxx!
Jackson Stevenson (5th Grade) shows GRIT by being a good student who follows directions and listens to his teacher. He is also really fun and a great big brother!

Our 6th graders have demonstrated extraordinary courage this week! Bodhi Thomas worked super hard on his second book report. Despite some frustration, and through a lot of editing and reworking, it turned out excellent! Renna Coleman completed and presented her first book report—it took some time and she was nervous about presenting, but she did it and was successful! Ava Nutter was really nervous about standing and speaking in front of class for her book report presentation, but she conquered her fears and did it!
James Koonrad has been making great strides in his reading. His participation in the Veterans Day assembly showed real GRIT by getting up in front of a crowd and reading his portion of the program to K-12th grades. True GRIT is also shown on the basketball court with determination and collaboration with your team! Keep up the good work, James!
Jadynn Smith has been working so hard on her academics, showing True GRIT as well as kindness to others. She brings a smile to everyone's face and is a true joy to be around. Way to go, Jadynn!
Senior Leadership: Persistence in Career and Technical Education
Chase Tupper (12th Grade) has shown GRIT in his Culture of Work during construction, especially during blueprint reading challenges. Chase was persistent, refusing to give up when frustrated, and was able to reset by trying a new approach, being open to teamwork, and successfully completing the challenge. Excellent work, Chase!
Reflections on GRIT
This week's nominations beautifully illustrate that GRIT looks different at every age and stage of learning. It's our PreK students like Rosalynn demanding more of themselves and realizing they CAN learn challenging concepts. It's our primary students like Eden never giving up on hard math problems and Aaliyah seeking out books that challenge her. It's our middle schoolers like Bodhi, Renna, Ava, and James conquering their nerves to present in front of their peers. It's Becky refusing to let distractions take away from her learning, and Chase persisting through construction challenges with teamwork and determination.
Most importantly, GRIT at Mary M. Knight isn't just about individual achievement—it's about how our students support one another. From Meika teaching friends the monkey bars, to Aaliyah helping classmates with Math and Reading, to David being a wonderful partner to everyone, our students understand that true strength comes from lifting each other up.
Thank you to all our students, families, and staff for fostering a community where perseverance, kindness, and determination are celebrated daily. We are incredibly proud of each and every one of these outstanding Owls!
Keep soaring, Owls! 🦉
