This Week at the Hill

Message from the Principal, Dr. Andre Bala
Welcome Back, Buffs!
I hope the Winter Break brought you rest, meaningful time with family and friends, and a chance to recharge for what’s ahead. There’s something special about returning to our building after break as the energy feels fresh, the possibilities feel wide open, and we get to start the second semester together with renewed focus and purpose.
As we begin Semester 2, I want you to know how excited I am for our students, staff, and families. This is a great time to set new goals, build positive routines, challenge yourself in the classroom, get involved in an activity, strengthen friendships, or simply show up each day ready to grow. No matter where you are starting from, this semester is a new opportunity to learn, improve, and succeed.
Thank you for being part of the Smoky Hill High School community. Your support, dedication, and Hill Side Price make our school a special place. Let’s make this semester our best yet!
With gratitude,
Dr. Andre Bala
Principal Updates
Semester 1 Strategic Plan Update
As we begin Semester 2, I want to share a brief update on our Smoky Hill High School Strategic Plan goals from Semester 1. I’m proud of the progress we’re making, and Smoky Hill High School is equally committed to the work still ahead.
Goal 1-Literacy: 60% of Smoky Hill High School 9th–11th grade students will score proficient or above in literacy as measured by STAR, PSAT, and SAT at the end of the 2025-2026 school year.
- * 57.82% of our 9th–11th graders demonstrated college/career readiness in Evidence-Based Reading & Writing on the Fall 2025 PSAT.
- * 52.3% of our 9th and 10th graders scored at or above the CCSD literacy benchmark on the Fall 2025 STAR assessment.
Goal 2-Disproportionality: Smoky Hill High School will reduce the over-representation of habitually truant Hispanic/Latino students from 9.2% in 2024-2025 to 4.6% by the end of the 2025–2026 school year.
- * Semester 1 showed a 10.9% over-representation of Hispanic/Latino students identified as habitually truant.
- * At the same time, our overall Semester 1 average daily attendance was 85.3%, a 3.4% increase from 2024–2025; an encouraging step forward.
Goal 3-Whole Well Being: 60% of 9th-12th-grade students will indicate a strong sense of belonging as measured by the Winter 2026 Panorama SEL Survey.
- * 43% of students reported a strong sense of belonging on the Fall 2025 Panorama SEL survey; an increase of 4%from Fall 2024.
Thank you for your partnership and support. Together, we will keep building momentum this semester by strengthening learning, improving attendance, and ensuring every student feels seen, supported, and connected at Smoky Hill.
With gratitude,
Dr. Andre Bala | Principal, Smoky Hill High School
Smoky Hill High School STRIDE Clinic Now Open!
We’re excited to share that the Smoky Hill STRIDE Clinic is now open for business in its new, permanent location in the school’s south parking lot! This on-campus clinic is a convenient resource for students, families, and community members.
The STRIDE Clinic provides accessible health services, including basic wellness visits, treatment for minor illnesses and injuries, preventive care (including immunizations, as available), and referrals for additional supports when needed.
Thank you for supporting this important partnership as we continue working to keep our community healthy, supported, and ready to learn.
After School Student Pickup-South Parking Lot
I’m writing to share an important update regarding after-school student pickup at Smoky Hill High School.
Beginning this semester, the north parking lot (located on E. Smoky Hill Rd.) will no longer be accessible for after-school student pickup. To ensure a safe and efficient dismissal process, all after-school student pickup will take place in the south parking lot (located on E. Buffalo Way).
We appreciate your partnership as we make this adjustment. Shifting pickup to one designated area will help us improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and support a smoother, safer experience for students, families, and staff.
Thank you for your cooperation and flexibility. We are grateful for your continued support as we work to keep our campus operations running safely and smoothly.

SY 2026-2027 Registration Information News!
Course Registration Guide for the 26-27

Teachers will also be making course recommendations for students as well.
Smoky Hill 26-27 Course Registration Guide/Guía de Inscripción en Cursos 2026-27
SMOKY HILL HIGH SCHOOL CONCURRENT & DUAL ENROLLMENT 2026-2027
Concurrent Enrollment: Earn high school credit and college credit at the same time. Courses are offered through local community colleges and taught at CCSD high schools by accredited, post-secondary teachers. Courses are free if the student completes the required paperwork including Colorado Opportunity Fund (COF) and meets the prerequisites.
Dual Enrollment: Similar to Concurrent Enrollment. Families incur a small tuition cost to enroll. Courses offered through Metro State University of Denver and taught at CCSD high schools.
Some courses have prerequisites that must be met in order to enroll in class and be eligible to earn college credit. Student must do the following to earn college credit:
- Satisfy prerequisites
- Complete Student/ Parent Agreement
- Apply to the college
- Get a C or higher
- Be enrolled the entire term
For the course to be tuition free, the student must apply for COF (College Opportunity Fund) during the college application process.
Weighting of Concurrent Enrollment (CE) and Dual Enrollment (DE)
We are writing to share important information about Cherry Creek School District (CCSD) Concurrent Enrollment (CE) and Dual Enrollment (DE) courses. Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, particular CE and DE courses will be weighted in Grade Point Average (GPA) calculations. Please note that this change is not retroactive and will apply only to courses taken in the 2026–2027 school year and beyond.
To be eligible for weighted GPA credit, CE and DE courses must meet two of the following three criteria:
- The course has a college readiness and/or college prerequisite as defined by the partnering postsecondary institution
- The course is a CCSD defined core academic class
- The course is a Guaranteed Transfer (GT) course as defined by the Colorado Department of Higher Education
This shift aligns CCSD with practices across other Denver Metro area school districts. It also reflects our district's ongoing commitment to ensuring that students have equitable opportunities as they pursue their pathway of purpose.
As always, we encourage students to work closely with their school counselor, current teachers, and families when selecting their high school courses. Course choices should support each student’s individual postsecondary goals whether that means earning a certificate, entering the workforce, attending college, joining the military, or exploring another pathway.
To help families and students make informed decisions, we recommend:
- Attend scheduled registration information meetings with your school counselor and teachers during registration time.
- Review your high school's current course guide and the CE and DE offerings that are available.
- Talk with teachers about how specific classes may support student interests and strengths.
- Exploring CCSD’s college and career readiness resources
- Examine Colorado’s Guaranteed Transfer course list
We are excited to continue supporting students as they discover and pursue their unique paths. Thank you for partnering with us in this vital work. For questions, comments, and/or concerns, please contact Mr. Chris Ritchie, CE Coordinator at 720-886-5491 or critchie@cherrycreekschools.org.

Glasses are delivered directly to the school with an optician for proper fitting—no extra appointments needed.
Each student receives a folder with the optometrist’s report and, if applicable, a copy of their prescription.

This January, SAMHSA will be kicking off the first national Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month - a time to raise awareness of the benefits and availability of evidence-based treatments for people with a substance use disorder (SUD). We know so many people view January as a time to take stock, reset and take steps toward healthier living, which makes it a great time to highlight resources and information on substance use disorder.
