Frosty in First Grade

Time is flying by in first grade at Pakachoag. We had a fun time celebrating our 100th day of school and can’t believe soon we will be approaching the start of our third trimester!

In math, our first graders have begun iReady Unit 4, where they are exploring base-ten concepts and learning how to navigate a number grid. This unit focuses on counting to 120 and developing a strong understanding of place value by grouping numbers into tens and ones. Students have been practicing comparing numbers using greater than, less than, and equal to symbols, and we have recently started adding two-digit numbers. Please continue practicing math facts at home each day to help your child build fluency when solving addition and subtraction problems within 20.

In literacy, we have started Wonders Unit 4: Animals Everywhere. Throughout this unit, students will be reading a variety of selections about different types of animals. They will learn about animals’ features and how they survive and adapt in their environments. As a culminating activity, students will be creating animal habitats during the week of March 16th.

During this unit, students will continue strengthening their comprehension skills by focusing on plot and sequence, identifying the main idea and key details, and understanding point of view.

Reading at home remains one of the most important ways to support your child’s learning. Enjoy reading a favorite book together and talk about the story. Ask questions such as:

  • Where does the story take place?

  • Who are the characters?

  • What is the problem, and how is it solved?

  • What do you think will happen next?

The more engaged your child is in reading, the deeper their understanding will grow. Choosing books that spark their interest makes a big difference.

Please continue reviewing high-frequency words at home—these can always be found on the “Peek at the Week.”

Thank you for your continued support at home!

The First Grade Team

The Grade 2 Team

The students have learned and practiced many new things this trimester! In reading, the students learned strategies such as sequence of events, main topic and key details, and problem and solution. It is important that your child continue to read for 20 minutes each day to continue working on their reading skills. When you are reading at home with your child, please remember to ask them what they have read about after reading a chapter or a picture book. You can ask them who the characters were; where the story took place; you can discuss the beginning, middle, and end of the book or have your child identify the problem and solution. Sometimes students do a great job at reading the words but cannot tell you what they read about.

The students are continuing to work through the new iReady math curriculum. This trimester we focused on place value to the hundreds and comparing 3-digit numbers. The students learned many different strategies to show 3-digit numbers; they can use base-10 blocks, expanded form, write the number in words, or standard form.

We have been working on some new science and social studies topics. During Trimester II, we learned about goods and services and we will begin learning about continents.

Thank you for your continued support!
