Weekly Westwood Community Bulletin - Week of 9/7
🐬 Week 7 at Westwood!
Dear Westwood Families,
It’s hard to believe we are already heading into Week 7! Our school year is moving quickly, and we have some exciting things happening this week.
Reminder: No School Monday, September 7
Please remember that there is no school this Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day. We hope our Westwood families enjoy the long weekend, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back on Tuesday!
💙 Lunch with a Loved One
We are looking forward to welcoming our families to our first Lunch with a Loved One this Wednesday! We are excited to share this special time together and create some wonderful memories with our students. Thank you in advance for helping us make this a safe and positive experience for everyone.
📚 Fall Intersession Enrollment
We are also currently in the process of enrolling students for Fall Intersession. If your child has the opportunity to attend, I highly encourage you to consider taking advantage of this additional learning time.
Intersession is a great way for students to stay actively engaged in learning, maintain their school routines, and continue building important skills. This can be especially beneficial for students who are working to strengthen their academic skills or make continued progress toward their learning goals.
We know that family schedules and commitments can make attending difficult, but if your child is able to participate, we would love to have them join us! Keeping students connected to learning and the routines of school during breaks can make a positive difference when they return to their regular schedule.
Thank you for your continued partnership and for all you do to support your child’s learning and success. We are so grateful to have such a wonderful Westwood community!
Have a wonderful long weekend, and Go Dolphins! 🐬💙
With appreciation,
Mrs. Azevedo

Lunch with a Loved One - IMPORTANT UPDATE
Wednesday 9/9
🍎 Lunch with a Loved One
We are excited to welcome our families to our first Lunch with a Loved One! Thank you for taking the time to join your child for this special opportunity. We want to make sure everyone knows where to enter and what to expect.
🚪 Please Use the Gate for Your Child’s Grade
We will have three designated gates for families:
Grades 3–6: Grades 3–6 gate
SDC & Grades 1–2: SDC/Grades 1–2 gate
TK & Kindergarten: TK/K gate
Each gate will have a sign clearly identifying which grades should enter through that gate. Please look for the signs when you arrive to help guide you to the correct entrance.
⏰ Sign-In Times
TK & Kindergarten:
Sign-in begins at 11:25 a.m. This will give families time to check in and find a place to sit in the designated TK/K area.
Grades 1–6:
Sign-in begins at 11:40 a.m. Please allow time to check in and find a space before lunch begins.
🧺 Seating
Some tables will be available, but blankets or mats are recommended so families have additional seating options.
SDC classes will eat in the cafeteria to help support their students' familiar daily routines.
❤️ Can't Attend? Don't Worry!
We understand that not every family member will be able to attend, and we don't want any student to feel like they are missing out!
Students in grades 1–6 will still get to enjoy a special treat with their classmates. We will have a nacho truck on campus for students to enjoy, regardless of whether a parent or loved one is able to attend.
🎒 At the End of Lunch
At the conclusion of lunch, students will retrieve their backpacks and exit with their parent/guardian at dismissal.
If you would like to check your child out before the regular dismissal time, you must do so through the school office. Please do not take your child directly from the lunch area unless it is dismissal time.
We are so happy to share this special time with our students and families. Thank you for being part of our first Lunch with a Loved One! We look forward to seeing you there!
Online Data Confirmation - We are at 61%
Families, please take a few minutes to complete Online Data Confirmation (ODC). Completing ODC ensures that your child’s school has current contact information and all required annual forms for the school year. To complete ODC: If you need clarity on the above steps, or would like to see screenshots, please view this document or call our school's office. Every completed confirmation helps our school stay connected with families and better equips us to support students. Thank you for partnering with us and helping us start the year strong!
A gentle reminder that we need your help. A large chunk of our funding comes from our online data confirmation. We are handing out prizes to students that complete it along with a pizza party for the first classes to reach 100% in both primary and intermediate.
Literacy Matters at Westwood!
One of our biggest focuses this year is helping our students become strong, confident, and fluent readers.
As a staff, we have been meeting for data chats and looking closely at student achievement. Our students recently completed the STAR assessment, and one area we know we need to continue working on is reading fluency. We want our students to not only be able to read the words, but to read smoothly, confidently, and with understanding.
Families play such an important role in this! One of the best things you can do at home is simply help your child develop a love of reading.
For our students in 2nd grade and up, please encourage them to practice reading out loud at home. Reading aloud gives students the opportunity to build fluency and confidence. You can also ask your child if they are taking and passing their Accelerated Reader quizzes. We want students to be reading books that are just right for them and celebrating their progress along the way!
And we are going to have a little fun with it! 🎉
Throughout the year, we will be raffling gold coins at every grade level for students who are successfully passing their Accelerated Reader quizzes. These gold coins can be used with our Book Vending Machine to choose a book to take home and enjoy!
For our younger readers, easy readers and books they can read independently are wonderful. But please remember that reading to your child is just as important. When you read to your child, you are building excitement around books, modeling what fluent reading sounds like, introducing new vocabulary, and helping them develop a love for stories and learning.
This will be a huge focus for us this year, and I am so excited to see the growth our students will make. With our teachers, families, and students all working together, I know we can help our Dolphins become strong and confident readers!
Keep reading, Westwood! 📖💜💙
Have You Reported Your Students' Absence?
Please work with us to Board Policy states that a student is allowed 14 illness days for the school year. After this time a medical note is required or the absence is NOT excused.
Examples of unexcused absences include missing school due to:
- Going out of town or on vacation
- Attending weddings
- Oversleeping
- A parent/guardian/sibling having an appointment
- Not having a babysitter
- Attending a graduation
Guardians have 10 days to clear an absence before it is considered unexcused regardless of reason. After 10 days, the absence cannot be changed.
If a child is on an intra-district transfer from another school, regular attendance is mandatory and required to approve the intra-district agreement.
