MHS STUDENT & FAMILY NEWSLETTER
August 7, 2025
RSU 57 & Massabesic High School
"Preparing students for success in an ever-changing world."
Hello Mustang Nation,
I hope this newsletter finds you all enjoying some of the fantastic weather we have been experiencing lately. We are eagerly anticipating the return for students on September 2 (Grade 9 & SRTC only) and September 3 (all students).
Fall Athletics: Our preseason events begin on Monday, August 18. Please remember to sign up through our registration process linked below in this newsletter.
MHS Community Forum
In the previous edition of our MHS Student & Family Newsletter we outlined several important pieces of information to continue informing our school community of impactful changes to our school operation for the 2025-2026 school year. Those same components are again included in this edition of the newsletter. Please carefully review the letter that is attached to the newsletter and seriously consider the accompany information. Additionally, we will be hosting a Community Forum to discuss the most recent cell phone/personal electronic device policy implementation and the percentage-based grading system. The purpose of the forum is to provide information, clarify questions, address concerns, and hear from our students (some have already expressed interest in such an opportunity knowing that changes are in store). The Community Forum will be held on Thursday, August 21 at 6:30 pm in the MHS Auditorium. The forum will also be live-streamed by our technology department - a link to the livestream is linked below and will be shared again as we get closer to the event. I encourage all students, families, and community members interested in these changes to attend in person (or online) and join the conversation.
Take care,
-Mr. Thurlow

Congratulations to rising Senior Josie Fryzlewicz
Congratulations to Josie Fryzlewicz who participated in Dirigo State on the Colby College Campus in Waterville, ME, June 15th - 20th and in the Cohen Institute Summer Leadership Program on the University of Maine Campus, June 22nd - 28th.
Dirigo State Program Description - Sponsored by the American Legion (formerly Boys and Girls State), this youth leadership program has students from across Maine come together to create their own town, county, and state governing bodies. This allows students finishing their junior year of high school a hands-on experience in government and leadership. MHS and Josie would like to thank the American Legion Brown-Emmons Post No. 134 in Alfred for sponsoring Josie for this event.
Cohen Institute High School Summer Leadership Program Description - The William S. Cohen Institute for Leadership & Public service works to promote leadership and public service "through programs that reflect and honor the rich legacy of one of Maine's most highly respected and influential leaders." The Summer High School Leadership Program immerses rising high school seniors in both the theory and practice of leadership. During the event, fifty students, representing each of Maine's counties, will meet high-profile Maine leaders from across a wide range of fields and will participate in a variety of co-curricular and outdoor leadership programs. In addition to participating in the event, students in the program are required to complete a college-level course in leadership studies for which they will earn college credit which can be used toward a future college degree. Josie is the first student from Massabesic High School to participate in this prestigious program since it started in 2019.
