School Counseling News
Next week, February 3rd-7th is National School Counseling Week. National School Counseling Week is a time to celebrate and spread awareness about the role school counselors play in supporting students. Counselors are here to assist families and advocate for students’ academic, behavioral, and emotional success. We partner with parents, teachers, administrators, and community agencies to help our students thrive and reach their full potential. All Bellefonte Elementary schools are participating in spirit days to recognize school counseling week. Feel free to have your child participate if they would like!
Recess Temperatures
As stated in our Student Handbook, if the real feel and actual temperature are both over 20 degrees, students go outside for recess. If the grass area is snow covered or too muddy, students are still able to be on the blacktop. Please keep this in mind as you dress your children over the winter months so that they are dressed appropriately to be outside for recess.
If you are in need of any winter clothes for your children, please contact Mr. Baughman at mbaughman@basd.net
Yearbooks

News from the Nurse
February is National Children’s Dental Health Month:
All kindergarten and 3rd-grade students are required to provide a copy of a dental exam to the school nurse. Please send a completed dental exam form to your school nurse if you have not already done so. If you need a copy email rgriel@basd.net or click here for the private dental form.
Remember cavities can be prevented. Brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between your teeth daily (flossing), eating a healthy diet that limits sugary beverages and snacks, and seeing your dentist regularly for prevention and treatment of oral disease are keys to a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. If your student needs a toothbrush, toothpaste, or dental floss have them stop in and ask their certified school nurse, Dr. Griel.
Remember, Bellefonte does not have fluoride added to the water supply. So dental health and hygiene are very important. Be sure to brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily. Consult your healthcare provider to see if a fluoride supplement is necessary. Consider dental sealants which help protect your child’s teeth and save money. Sealants form a protective barrier that helps prevent bacteria from causing tooth decay. Ask your dentist about sealants. Contact your certified school nurse, Dr. Griel if you need help finding affordable dental care for your child.
If your student is active in sports, remember that mouthguards are an important piece of protective face gear. They cushion blows that might otherwise cause broken teeth, injuries to the lips and face, and sometimes jaw fractures. Ask your dentist about mouthguards to protect your child’s smile.

Physical and Dental Exams:
Letters were mailed home with the screening results if your student still needs a physical or dental. If you are unsure, send me an email at rgriel@basd.net and I will let you know.
If you need either of these forms they can be downloaded from the district site on the nursing services page, scroll to the health forms drop-down menus. We will also accept a printout from your health care provider's computer system- be sure it has your student's name and date of birth and a review of systems. You don’t need to use our form. If you need any of these forms sent home with your student call the nurse’s office at (814) 355-5466 ext 5005 or email me at rgriel@basd.net.
