Principal Corner
Happy Friday, CES Families!
I am incredibly proud of our Chapelfield Student Council officers who shone brightly this week. They had the honor of giving a tour to members of the Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools (GJPS) Board of Education and our Central Office Leadership Team, showcasing what makes Chapelfield so special.
During the tour, our student leaders eloquently presented key aspects of our school, including:
Our ongoing Legacy Project.
- The effective use of our new "Calm Corners" in three classrooms—a direct outcome of our commitment to Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). These corners give students a quiet, safe space to regulate their emotions and are a vital part of our PBIS work, helping to teach self-management skills.
- An example of deep learning shown in the 5th-grade end-of-module task.
It was a joy to see our students confidently articulate their experiences and highlight the positive environment we’ve built together. We have so much to celebrate, especially the leadership and character of our students!
Please remember that there will be no school on Monday, November 10th. We look forward to seeing all our wonderful students back at Chapelfield on Tuesday, November 11th.
Sincerely,
Nikki Miller Principal, Chapelfield Elementary
Ways you can support us at home:
Naglieri (NNAT) - Grade 2 and Grade 5
Each year, around this time, students in our district are administered a cognitive ability test in accordance with Ohio Administrative Code 3301-51-15.
Students in grades 2 and 5 will take the Naglieri Nonverbal Abilities Test (NNAT) assessment during the month of November, and results are expected to be shared with families in December. Our grade 2 students will take this assessment on November 5 and our grade 5 students will take this assessment on November 12.
This is a standardized test given to many students across the country that measures reasoning abilities. The results of this test provides families and teachers with information that can be added to the overall classroom picture/profile of students’ ability, thereby helping to inform instructional decisions.
Drop Off Reminders
Please help us out. Parents SHOULD NOT drive in the bus lane OR BLOCK the LANE during the following hours:
7:30-8:35 a.m. or 2:15-3:15 p.m.
Please park your car or use the carpool lane to drop off your children through Middle School West. Our job is to keep kids safe. Having parents drive in the bus lane or blocking the entrance is not safe and it blocks the buses.
We need to keep your kids safe and moving traffic as efficiently as possible. Thank you for your cooperation.

The school counseling office can help connect you with local programs and community resources. Reach out to Mrs. Jasin with any questions (jasink@gjps.org or 478-5575 ext 22143).

Music with Mrs. Herrmann
October has been filled with singing in the music room as students prepare for Chapelfield’s Veterans Day Assembly. Students have spent time learning about what it means to be a veteran and how to show gratitude and respect for our military heroes. We look forward to honoring our veterans next Tuesday!
Fourth and fifth grade continue to read and perform music through drumming and have put lots of time into preparing for Veterans Day assembly.
Third grade has been working on reading and performing rhythms that include sixteenth notes which we call “ticka ticka” through songs such as “Tick Tock.” They’ve spent time learning a dance from Mexico called Los Machetes.
Second grade recently learned that a half note gets two beats. They learned this through some new songs including “Button You Must Wander” and with a fun game while singing “Let Us Chase the Squirrel.” Ask your child to show you where the “long sounds” are in Seven Jumps. This is a favorite movement piece with one leader. Your child can lead and see if you can follow.
First graders are learning how to differentiate one sound vs. two sounds in a beat which is leading them into reading rhythms in the coming weeks. Both Kindergarten and first graders had a great time with Blowing in the Wind. Your child can sing along and share this with you with a scarf or even a large napkin or paper towels. Kindergarteners are learning to keep a steady beat while singing and are continuing to learn how to stop and start, while moving through space. They are learning how to work as a team using the parachute and a new favorite - the stretchy band! It is like a giant hair scrunchy that we can stretch across the room while listening to music. It takes lots of self control because it is so exciting and students are doing a great job following directions when we use it!
Hope you have a great weekend,
Mrs. H.

Attendance Procedures
Pursuant to House Bill 410, student attendance is calculated in hours. This includes absences that have been identified as both excused and unexcused by the school, as well as planned absences. Being late or tardy to school does calculate into the total hours absent.
If your child is going to be absent for any portion of the school day, please notify the school. You may report an absence by using our Online Absence Reporting available in the Parent Portal in Infinite Campus. To enter a request follow these simple steps:
1.Log in to your Infinite Campus Parent Portal account.
2. Select your child’s profile.
3. Navigate to the Absence Request section.
4. Fill in the required information, including the date and reason for the absence.
5. Submit your request.
You will be able to view the status of your request using the View Requests button.
You may also call Chapelfield at 614-478-5575 or email our secretary at gilzows@gjps.org.
Medical excuses from a doctor can be submitted to Stephanie Gilzow, our school secretary, through email (gilzows@gjps.org) or sending in a paper copy.
Parent Phone calls to change transportation
The front office is a busy place the last 30 minutes of school. We ask that parents NOT CALL to make transportation changes after 2 p.m. Please make sure students know your plan of pick up before they come to school.

Visual & Performing Arts Gifted Education Identification
Each year, school districts in Ohio are required to offer an opportunity for students in grades K-12 to be identified as gifted in the area of Visual and Performing Arts. The identified areas of giftedness for Visual and Performing Arts include Visual Arts, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Drama/Theater, and Dance.
