Our Lady of the Mission
Whitford Parish - 14th June 2026
This Sunday is: 14th June Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Next Sunday is: 21st June Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Message from Fr Cyprian
Greetings and peace be with you.
Fr Errol and I warmly welcome you here at Our Lady of the Mission, Whitford Parish, parishioners and visitors alike. We pray and hope that you feel truly safe and at home in this our place of prayer, worship and personal encounter with our risen Lord. May the Holy Spirit ever pray in us more than we can ever imagine and bind us together in the love of our Heavenly Father. Over fifty years, Whitford Catholic Parish remains home to dozens of nationalities represented by our parishioners and frequent visitors. We take pride in our young people; those in our parish primary and secondary schools, those enrolled in our Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) and our parish youth group. They are not just our future Church but a vital part of our Church today and now. We value these our young people and endeavour to have their voices heard at every level of our administrative and pastoral engagements. We are ever grateful to the many individuals and groups that volunteer in various ministries of our parish life. To one and all, know that you are valued and appreciated in your own right. We cannot be what we are without you. Together, we continue to seek ways in which we can generously respond to that universal call to holiness of life in our families, parish community and in the society at large. I invite you and all your loved ones to be purposeful in this resolve. We must leave no one behind, those within and those on the peripheries. As always, Fr. Errol and I thank one and all of you for your ongoing prayers, concern, encouragement and support. Rest assured of our daily thoughts and prayers. We entrust you and yours, into the powerful intercessions of our Blessed Virgin Mother of Good counsel, and into those of St Joseph, patron of the universal Church.
Fr Cyprian M Shikokoti - Parish Priest.

Readings
Introduction Today we hear again how much our
heavenly Father treasures those who belong to him.
He desires us to be whole and holy, for we are his
people.
First Reading: Exodus 19:2-6
Moses assures the disobedient Israelites that they are
God’s treasured possession.
Second Reading: Romans 5:6-11
God loves us, despite our flaws. Jesus’ sacrifice is our proof.
Gospel: Matthew 9:36 – 10:8
Jesus instructs the apostles to continue his work of
loving people back to health and wholeness. Such transformations signalled the arrival of God’s reign.
Antiphon to the Psalm:
We are his people: the sheep of his flock.
Adsumus
How does Jesus empower me to help my community?
Here we are! This is the meaning of the Latin word Adsumus. It is the response of people called by God throughout the pages of the Bible: Here I am, Lord! (Exodus 3:4; 1 Samuel 3:4; Isaiah 6:8; Psalm 40:7-8). It is the response of every heart that opens itself to the will of God.
Adsumus may be new to some of us here today, but it has been used for centuries at important Church gatherings, councils, and synods and recently it was notably used for the Synod on Synodality (2021-2023) to invite the Holy Spirit to guide the Church's path.
This week marks the completion of the first phase of the Adsumus initiative. During this time, we will reflect on another line of the prayer:
‘Let us find in You our unity, so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right.’
Adsumus is a prayer to the Holy Spirit, inviting believers to embrace unity, for it is communion that protects us on our shared spiritual journey. God desires what is best for each of us, and the Holy Spirit helps us celebrate the many paths on which we are called to walk.
It is time for us to become an answer for this prayer.
Because God desires what is best for us, the Holy Spirit empowers us to embrace and celebrate the many different paths to which we are called. In today’s Gospel, Jesus issues a clear ‘help wanted’ call, inviting us to see as he sees: the deep need of lost people, the rich harvest they represent, and the pressing need for more workers to gather that harvest.
This week’s message can change our thinking. Jesus calls us to see as he sees, feel as he feels, and respond wherever there is need. In this way, our minds can be ready for our attitudes to be reshaped and renewed, just as God has always planned for this harvest—we are invited to ‘apply within.’
Death & Anniversary
Please offer your prayers this week for Mel Nerva, Mary Rooney, Marc, Nguyen thanh Hung, Tran thi Tu, Cao thi Ba, Le thi Ket, Darren Hart, Matthew Wood, Betty Beaton, Teresa Davies, Neil Maclean, George Zdumek, Jan d’Oliveira, Michael Mack Zbyszek, all souls in purgatory, those doctors, nurses and carers who have died while helping victims of accidents, disease and warfare, our recently departed loved ones and those whose anniversaries occur around this time.
Stewardship Corner
In today’s Gospel, Jesus sends out the disciples to meet the needs of others. His admonition to them is the same challenge He makes to us: “The gift you have received, give as a gift.”

READINGS AT MASS: ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR A
First reading: Exodus 19:2-6
I will count you a kingdom of priests, a consecrated nation
From Rephidim the sons of Israel set out again; and when they reached the wilderness of Sinai, there in the wilderness they pitched their camp; there facing the mountain Israel pitched camp. Moses then went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, ‘Say this to the House of Jacob, declare this to the sons of Israel, “You yourselves have seen what I did with the Egyptians, how I carried you on eagle’s wings and brought you to myself. From this you know that now, if you obey my voice and hold fast to my covenant, you of all the nations shall be my very own for all the earth is mine. I will count you a kingdom of priests, a consecrated nation.”’
Responsorial Psalm: Ps. 99(100):2-3,5
Response: We are his people, the sheep of his flock.
Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. R.
Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him, we are his people, the sheep of his flock. R.
Indeed, how good is the Lord, eternal his merciful love. He is faithful from age to age. R.
Second reading: Romans 5:6-11
Now we have been reconciled by the death of his Son, surely, we may count on being saved by the life of his Son
We were still helpless when at his appointed moment Christ died for sinful men. It is not easy to die even for a good man – though of course for someone really worthy, a man might be prepared to die – but what proves that God loves us is that Christ died for us while we were still sinners. Having died to make us righteous, is it likely that he would now fail to save us from God’s anger? When we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, we were still enemies; now that we have been reconciled, surely, we may count on being saved by the life of his Son? Not merely because we have been reconciled but because we are filled with joyful trust in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have already gained our reconciliation.
Gospel Acclamation: Mark 1:15
Alleluia, alleluia! The kingdom of God is near; repent and believe the Good News! Alleluia.
Gospel Reading: Matthew 9:36-10:8
The harvest is rich but the labourers are few
When Jesus saw the crowds, he felt sorry for them because they were harassed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest.’ He summoned his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to cast them out and to cure all kinds of diseases and sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, the one who was to betray him. These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them as follows: ‘Do not turn your steps to pagan territory, and do not enter any Samaritan town; go rather to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. And as you go, proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is close at hand. Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out devils. You received without charge, give without charge.’
WE PRAY AS ONE: ADSUMUS SANCTE SPIRITUS
We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name. With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at home in our hearts; Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it. We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder. Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions. Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right. All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time, in the communion of the Father and the Son, forever and ever, Amen.
POPE LEO XIV REFLECTIONS
Greetings, my brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today, in the Gospel, Jesus calls by name – he calls by name - and sends out the twelve Apostles. By sending them, he asks them to proclaim just one thing: “Preach as you go, saying ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand’” (Mt 10:7). It is the same proclamation with which Jesus began his preaching: the kingdom of God, that is, his lordship of love, has come near, it comes in our midst. And this is not just one piece of news among others, no, but the fundamental reality of life: the vicinity of God, the vicinity of Jesus.
Indeed, if the God of heaven is close, we are not alone on earth, and even in difficulty we do not lose faith. Here is the first thing to say to people: God is not far away, but he is a Father. God is not distant, he is a Father, he knows you and he loves you; he wants to take you by the hand, even when you travel on steep and rugged paths, even when you fall and struggle to get up again and get back on track. He, the Lord, is there with you. Indeed, often in the moments when you are at your weakest, you can feel his presence all the more strongly. He knows the path, he is with you, he is your Father! He is my Father! He is our Father!
Let us remain with this image, because proclaiming God as close to us is inviting you to think like a child, who walks held by his father’s hand: everything seems different. The world, large and mysterious, becomes familiar and secure, because the child knows he is protected. He is not afraid, and learns how to open up: he meets other people, finds new friends, learns with joy things that he did not know, and then returns home and tells everyone what he has seen, while within him there grows the desire to become grown up and to do the things he has seen his daddy do. This is why Jesus starts out from here, this is why God’s vicinity is the first proclamation: by staying close to God, we conquer fear, we open ourselves to love, we grow in goodness and we feel the need and the joy to proclaim.
If we want to be good apostles, we must be like children: we must sit “on God’s lap” and, from there, look at the world with trust and love, in order to bear witness that God is the Father, that he alone transforms our hearts and gives us that joy and that peace that we ourselves cannot attain.
To proclaim that God is near – but how can we do this? In the Gospel, Jesus recounts and recommends not saying many words, but performing many deeds of love and hope in the name of the Lord. Not saying many words, performing deeds! “Heal the sick”, says the Lord, “raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without pay, give without pay” (Mt 10:8). Here is the heart of proclamation: witness freely given, service. I will tell you something: I am always puzzled, very puzzled, by the “talkers” with their endless talk and no action.
At this point, let us ask a few questions: we, who believe in God who is close, I wonder: do we confide in him? Do we know how to look forward trustfully, like a child who knows he is held in his father’s arms? Do we know how to sit in the Father’s lap with prayer, by listening to the Word, partaking of the Sacraments? And finally, close to him, do we know how to instil courage in others, to make ourselves close to those who suffer and are alone, to those who are distant and even those who are hostile? This is the substance of faith. This is what counts.
