September 24, 2026

Hello SVA Community,

We have kicked off another fun and exciting year! It's wonderful to see both new and returning faces filling our halls and classrooms. It's hard to believe that we are already nearing the end of the first quarter of the year when it feels like we just returned.

With fall parent-teacher conferences approaching, a common question from parents is, “What can I do to help my child succeed?” This is an excellent question, and I have a simple answer: Encourage your student to read more. If your child doesn't read often, help them start by finding engaging reading material and setting aside dedicated time for it. If your child is already a reader, encourage them to explore a wider variety of genres and topics.

Independent reading matters for many reasons, but I will focus on three key benefits.

First, reading can improve memory and concentration. It engages parts of the brain that are not activated by screens, conversation, or sports. Reading serves as a detox from the short-form entertainment that many of our students consume. It trains the brain to remember details and recall them later, which is a skill that is valuable in education and in life.

Second, reading enhances communication skills. If you want your child to develop a richer vocabulary and communicate effectively in different situations, encourage them to read more. Reading is a powerful tool for vocabulary acquisition because it exposes students to new words in context. It also introduces them to various writing styles and ways of thinking, which they can incorporate into their own expression. It is estimated that student who read just 10 minutes a day are exposed to 600,000 more words and phrases per year than their non-reading classmates

Finally, reading fosters imagination. Your children likely have many great ideas and stories to tell. Reading provides context, perspective, empathy, visualization, and a blueprint for transforming ideas into reality. If your students have difficulty initiating projects, organizing their ideas, or articulating their perspectives, reading will be beneficial for them. In the same way a developing baseball player can learn by watching a pro, a developing thinker can learn by reading another’s thoughts.

For book recommendations, talk to your librarian, your students' teachers, check online or ask a friend. There are millions of books for all kinds of readers out there.

Best regards,

David Bow

A Letter From Mrs. Worley

Dear SVA Families,

As part of our continued commitment to enhancing our cybersecurity and protecting our staff's privacy and personal information, we have made a few updates to the staff directory on the SVA website.

We have removed staff photos and email addresses from public view. Families can still easily contact staff members through a secure contact form located on each staff member’s directory profile. Messages submitted through the form will be sent directly to the appropriate staff member.

We appreciate your understanding as we continue to evaluate ways to protect our staff's privacy while maintaining strong communication between our families and school.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of SVA!

Warmly,
Janet Worley
Head of Schools

How do we reach 10,000 Books?

We need your help making sure every book counts!

Kindergarten–2nd Grade Families - Parents, we need your help tracking the books your student reads at home! You have two easy options:

  • Google Form: Submit the title each time your student finishes a book.
  • Monthly Book Log: Track books throughout the month and turn in the completed log at the end of each month.

3rd–5th Grade Students - You have a few ways to make sure your reading counts:

  • Reading an A/R book? - No extra logging needed! When you complete the A/R test, the book will automatically count toward our school-wide total.
  • Reading a non-A/R book? Make sure it still counts! Record it using either: The Google Form, or The Monthly Book Log.

Our goal is 10,000 books by May 14, 2027 — and we need every reader and every book to get there!

Read it. Log it. Count it.

Because Ms. Harrison has a date with Churro...

And we have 10,000 books to read first!
