The Wellwood Globe
June 2026 Issue
Our School Mission
At Wellwood International, our mission is to help students grow into knowledgeable, kind, and confident learners. We provide a challenging and supportive education in a multicultural setting, where every child learns to respect and value differences. We want our students to feel safe, cared for, and inspired to do their best every day.
Principal's Message
Dear Wellwood Families,
As we come to the end of the school year, I want to simply say, "Thank you!" Thank you for trusting us with your children, for partnering with us, and for being such an important part of our community. This year has been full of growth, hard work, and meaningful moments, and I am so proud of what we have accomplished together.
Here are just a few highlights from this year:
- We maintained our 4-star school rating, showing continued success and improvement
- Overall attendance increased to 95.4%, with more students coming to school consistently
- Fewer students were chronically absent, thanks to strong family partnership and schoolwide incentives
- Students made steady progress in reading and math across the school
- Nearly 20% of students receiving language services exited those supports this year
- Our students with disabilities showed growth in both attendance and academics
- Our staff built and sustained strong systems to support students academically, socially, and emotionally
The work never ends, but we have made so much progress this year. I hope this summer brings your family rest, joy, and time together. I look forward to continuing this work with you next year.
With appreciation,
Alonna Thompson, Principal

💖 Counseling Corner
We have reached the end of another school year! This year students participated in school counseling lessons on a variety of topics including school success, celebrating differences, relationship and coping skills, personal safety, bullying, character, diversity, mindfulness, and career exploration. It is our hope that the core curriculum counseling lessons will help to promote the social emotional, academic, and career development of our students. We hope that you can help your child reflect on these lessons over the summer!
Summer can be a time filled with fun, family, and sunshine. It can also be a time of stress and uncertainty, for children and adults. Please know that while Wellwood isn’t filled with all our staff and students over the summer, you are never alone. If your family experiences challenges or needs support during the summer, please reach out to our Community School Facilitator, Ms. Friedberg at mfriedberg@bcps.org.
Wishing you sunshine, laughter, and special memories this summer. See you in August!

As we wrap up another wonderful school year, we would like to dedicate this final Family Spotlight to all of our Wellwood families!
Thank you for your partnership, support, and dedication throughout the year! Nurse's Notes
End of the School Year Medication Reminder & Summer Safety Tips
Medication Pick-Up Reminder
As the school year comes to a close, please remember to pick up your child’s medication from the school health suite by June 16. Medication cannot be sent home with students and must be picked up by a parent or designated adult.
If medication is not picked up by June 16, and arrangements have not been made with the school nurse, the medication will be discarded according to school system guidelines.
If you are unable to pick up your child’s medication by this date but want to retrieve it, please contact the school nurse at cseidler@bcps.org to make arrangements.
Medication Forms for School Year 2026–2027
If your child will need medication administered at school next year, a new Medication Administration Authorization Form must be completed for the 2026–2027 school year. The form is located on Wellwood’s Website and must be signed by both the parent/guardian and your child’s healthcare provider before medication can be given at school.
Please plan ahead over the summer so your child is ready for a healthy start to the new school year!
Summer Safety Tips for Children
Sun Safety
Summer fun often means more time outdoors.
Help protect your child from the sun by:
- Applying sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before outdoor activities
- Reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours and after swimming
- Wearing hats, sunglasses, and lightweight protective clothing
- Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water
- Taking breaks in the shade during the hottest part of the day
