Are some mornings better than others?

Nagging, prodding, lost library books, breakfast half-eaten, everyone frantically racing out the door...is this how mornings begin in your home? We know it's important to get kids off to a great start in the mornings and yet why is it that our days often begin with everyone feeling rushed and irritated? With a little problem solving and advance planning, morning routines can become just the right start for a great day.

*Establish a simple routine for each family member

*Identify pressure points (those areas that create the MOST problems)

*Hold family meetings to strategize

*Be proactive...the night before have children

-set clothes out

-put all school supplies, lunch money, etc. in backpacks and set by exit door

-check weather to decide if it will be a coat or umbrella day

-get to bed on time

*Insist that children do for themselves those things they are capable of doing. (By age eight kids should be able to get up by using an alarm clock.)

*Post a reminder chart of morning responsibilities

*Respect each child's waking pattern (music, back rub, five minute warning, etc.)

*Keep the TV off until totally ready

*Institute consequences (If you don't get up when called, it's to bed a half-hour earlier tonight. If you aren't dressed on time, you can dress in the car pool.)

Stick with your new plan long enough to establish a pattern. It's well worth the extra effort!
