Message from Principal Nicole Pease

Dear DCS families,

This has been such a fun week! Monday brought our first whole school meeting, where we greet each other, play a game, celebrate birthdays and honor a student with the Miss Emily Award for Caring and Kindness. Miss Emily was a long time teacher at DCS who was the most kind person I have ever known and beloved by many. Each month we select a student to be receive this award.

Wednesday brought our first whole school Field Trip to the Harris Center. Students got to explore things in a pond, under a log, and in the sky. As if that wasn't enough we enjoyed a picnic lunch!

Friday we Walked to School from the General Store with the support of our Police Chief to cross the street. It is so fun to see our whole school walk up the street. We get many waves from the cars going by. Jeannie Connolly came to school to create a collaborative art project which you will see adorning our walls when you come to Harvest Supper/Open House next week. I am looking forward to seeing you next week, have a great weekend, Nicole

Kind Kindergarten and First Grade

It's been a fun, busy week here at DCS! Of course, the highlight was our field trip to the Harris Center to explore life in a pond, in the air and under a log. These kiddos are natural scientists who found such joy in their discoveries from nature.

Kindergarteners have learned upper and lower case A, M, S and T as well the letter sound and the words: said, I, the & and. There was incredible excitement when they realized they could build words and simple sentences! First graders are finishing up a review of all short vowel sounds and are ready for digraphs (two letters that make one sound- /sh/) very soon. How can you support your K-1 student in learning to read? Snuggle up with a book!

Our caterpillars have all made their chrysalis and we are patiently waiting for the Painted Lady butterflies to emerge!

Sweet Second Grade

Second Graders have been busy in the garden! We harvested many pounds of potatoes from our Cornucopia garden. We made predictions about how many pounds we harvested in total from all the elementary schools. We learned a little saying, "A pint a pound around the world," which told us that filling up a pint jar with water was a pound. We balanced potatoes in one bucket with the pound of water in another bucket to figure out how many pounds were harvested. The kids kept track with tallies in their journals. It was great seeing every student eagerly weighing potatoes, then adding up to get a final total weight of 55 pounds. It was not the most efficient or accurate way to measure, but it was a great activity to demonstrate the scientific process while working cooperatively.

Seed Dispersal is one of the science standards for second graders. Jaime from the Harris Center came to our classroom to teach us the ways seeds travel as well as help us how specific seeds travel. The students gathered seeds from the edge of the gardens and then went inside to examine each one with small lenses. They could categorize the seeds that travel by wind, water, and animals.

We've also been practicing measuring with centimeters and meters. We enjoyed measuring large objects and spaces with our meter sticks on a rainy Friday afternoon!

Thinking in Third

Third Grade has been super busy wrapping up our weather unit, learning about climate and natural disasters. Some highlights were painting beautiful journal covers, starting Reading Buddies with K/1, and learning about Opinion Writing with 4/5. For our Social/Emotional Learning, the children reflected on themselves in each Zone, illustrating these for individual books. We focused on r-controlled vowels, characters in our stories and discovering the meaning of multiplication, expressions, and symbols.

Fabulous in Fourth and Fifth

We have had a wonderful stretch of learning! We are finished with the NWEA and have focused on our learning routines. We have enjoyed writing with 3rd grade and done a lot of partner reading, research and writing.

Our field trip to the Harris Center was educational and enjoyable!

This week in Wellness

This week in Wellness students reviewed and practiced throwing, tossing, and catching techniques. Games included - make it/take it and fire and ice tag. Younger students continued to practice locomotor skills, practice self toss/catch skills, and learned how to play banana tag. All classes talked about 'be the change' and making positive, healthy choices that reflect respectful character traits.

We had fun!

From our School Counselor

Note from Ms. Gregg, School Counselor

Weekly classroom counseling lessons are happening in each class--Kindergarten through Fourth/Fifth Grade. Kindergarten, first grade and second grade students learned/reviewed the skills of listening and paying attention. Ask your child(ren) to explain “whole body listening.” (Eyes looking, ears listening, voice off, body in control, brain thinking, heart open). Third grade students began to learn about the human brain and how the brain changes when we learn and practice new things. Fourth and Fifth grade students discussed the elements of a good goal–it is specific, challenging/ambitious, and do-able, and began talking about initiating and working toward a possible class goal.

T-Shirts and DCS Gear

Through a very generous donation from the Dublin Community Foundation, we will be purchasing teal green T-shirts with the DCS logo for students in grades K-2 and other new students who have not already received one.. We love our wonderful community!

If you or your child would like to purchase your own t-shirt, or other DCS Gear, please check out the link below. https://dublinravens.secure-decoration.com/

DCS collects aluminum can tabs for "Tabs for Taylor"

Taylor is 15 years old and has been a patient at Shriners Hospital since birth. She has benefitted greatly by receiving prosthetics and her family gives back by collecting can tabs. The can tabs go to purchasing items for patient care. Taylor is the niece of Sarah Precourt (Mrs. Hopkin's daughter).

DCS has been collecting tabs for years and countless students and their families have contributed to this effort. Please send in any tabs from aliminum cans and we will add them to the collection. Thank you!
