PRESIDENT'S LETTER PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Greetings!

The end of 2024 is quickly approaching, and it’s been another whirlwind year! Our most recent Civic Association event was our annual November Oyster Roast, which serves as the key fundraiser for the other events sponsored by the organization throughout the year. Those who attended had a great time, and the band, the BBQ and sides, and the Rappahannock oysters were great! This event takes a lot of time and effort on the part of many neighborhood volunteers, with key people spearheading the different focus areas. There were so many involved in making this a successful event, but I’d like to personally recognize the following neighbors for all their work:

- Many new faces joined the core set volunteers this year, thanks to the great planning and coordination efforts of Mike Hillian!

- Mark (Mac) McConathy, along with Chris Doddy, was key in the area setup, take-down, delivery and logistics! Chris was also instrumental (pun intended) in procuring a great band again this year!

- Ginnie and Tracy Stover expertly handled the staging, service and breakdown of the food tent area again!

- Kim and Sean LaCroix obtained all of the foodstuffs and supplies, and enlisted Sean’s sister and chef Siobhan once again for the non-stop on-site cooking!

- Cathie Sykes handled the wine and again coordinated our reliable barkeeps at the Tiki bar!

- Teri Doddy once again coordinated the ticketing/entryway, and worked with many area businesses to obtain the myriad of donated packages offered as raffle prizes to lucky attendees!

- Empsy Munden graciously offered the use of her home (with snacks!) to the core group of volunteers for all of our planning meetings.

- David Albis again took the lead in coordinating all of the moving parts, while also transitioning permit and monetary duties to our new Treasurer, Will Oakley. David’s efforts- including acquiring the thousands of delectable oysters we serve at this annual feast, definitely helped make this a success!

Thanks again to everyone involved in that event and to those currently working on the next Cape Story Civic Association treat- the annual visit from Santa in the “Cape Santa” kids celebration to be held on December 7 this year, in the neighborhood park. Unfortunately Elf Diana won’t be available, but Elf Cathie and others will make a special trip from the North Pole to assist key Elf Empsy and her Grinch pals again this year!

Related to the Cape Story events and volunteers, we are always looking for new and energetic people to get involved- to join and/or replace those of us who have been participating as officers and coordinators in the Civic Association these past years. We have many new families in Cape Story, and I’m sure there is a lot that we as an organization can do to not only entertain, but improve, our hidden oasis by the Bay- it just takes some dedication and commitment so we can continue these efforts moving forward. Please contact any of the current officers, or share your interests and ideas at any of our monthly meetings.

Finally- with the 2024 elections finally over, I can’t stress enough the value of staying informed and active in government happenings- especially at the local level, which affects us most directly on a daily basis. The City has made improvements to its website, and includes links and options for its many departments and services- visit https://virginiabeach.gov. The Virginia Beach Council of Civic Organizations (VBCCO) website also does a fine job at bringing current and planned events to the forefront- see https://www.vbcco.org.

Wishing everyone peace and happiness as we enter the Holiday Season!

Diana

Holiday Giving Holiday Giving

It's that time of year when we open our hearts & help those who are less fortunate. CSBTS is "adopting" 2 local military families for the Holiday. These families are living week to week so any gift cards would be greatly appreciated. When asked about a night out for dinner or a movie, most cannot remember the last time they had one.

Please contact Teri Doddy (teri@teridoddyhomes.com), or (757-621-6724) BEFORE purchasing items so that we don't have everyone buying for the same family. Drop offs can be made to Teri, 2219 Bayberry Street. Please indicate the family & family member the gift is for. All gifts are needed by Thur, Dec 19th.

Thanks for all CSBTS does for our Community!
