Library Time at Mill Valley
We are off and running with checking out books in the Mill Valley library! Over 1,000 books have already been checked out this school year! Students are learning how to navigate a library space, which books are interesting to each of them, and enjoying the books they are finding. The top 3 books this school year so far have been: Grumpy Monkey, I Spy School Days, and Komodo Dragon vs. Orangutan.
Picture Re-Take Day is Monday, October 6th
- If your student did not have their picture taken at our Student Summit on August 28th, they will have it taken on October 9th. Ordering information will be sent home that day.
- If your student had their picture taken, but a retake is needed, please return the original picture package to the photographer at the time of pictures. The same package will be ordered with the new image. New packages will not be received unless the original package is returned.

A Note From Dr. Silberg ~ Mill Valley & Lakeview's Behavior Coach
As September comes to a close and we approach the fall, I am always excited to prepare for fall activities like pumpkin and apple picking, raking leaves and watching the kids jump in the piles. When my children were little, these outings could be so much fun and create wonderful memories OR they could turn disastrous if there were too many bees at the apple orchard, we missed the hay wagon ride, or my older son jumped in the leaf pile before my younger son could get to it. Life is not a perfect facebook post, and our children have strong reactions to the natural emotions that come up when things just don’t turn out as they anticipate.
One of the best resources that I found to help me navigate their feelings was a book I read called "The Whole-Brain Child" by Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson.
This book helped me to understand how my children’s brains were developing and why they reacted as they did when big emotions surfaced. It also helped me to understand better how to help my children. In summary, there are 6 main steps to help your child navigate strong emotions.
In the newsletters to come, I will continue to supply various strategies to help you and your children regulate their emotions. Many of these strategies will also be taught throughout the year in your child’s classroom.
Never hesitate to contact me with any questions.
Monthly Attendance Updates
Once a month, you will receive an email from Infinite Campus detailing your student’s attendance history. All families will be receiving this email even if their child has not been absent from school. This email is meant to be a communication between school and home. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Jaime Goelz, School Social Worker at jaime.goelz@muskegonorway.org. Good attendance habits in the early grades are strong predictors for future success in high school and beyond.
And don't forget to ask for a school note for your child's doctor appointment. The absence will be marked DRX (doctor excused) rather than APT (appointment).
