All Stars: Becky Heikkila

The people who think that librarians read all day, check out a few books, and re-shelve them are mistaken. Becky has created a hub of information, resources, support, safety, comfort, and inclusion... and that takes daily work. Whittier Middle School's library is not only a place where students WANT to be, it's a place where staff want to be, too. It's not just the center of the school, it's the heart.

Last Call! MTSS Survey - Teaching Staff ONLY Last Call! MTSS Survey - Teaching Staff ONLY

The Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) is a framework in which data-based problem-solving and decisions making is practiced across all levels of an educational system for supporting students. The Sioux Falls School District began building the MTSS framework throughout the 2021-2022 school year and will continue for the next 2-3 years, supporting the 6 Essential Elements that must be addressed and sustained for effective implementation.

The MTSS Survey will help building teams assess the systems and structures they have (or still need) to establish an effective multi-tiered system of support (MTSS). These results will help identify current gaps and strengths for prioritization and planning the next steps in the building. This survey is not intended to demonstrate whether your school is effectively implementing MTSS; it is intended to assist your team with identifying where to focus your time and resources as you build your system.

PBIS FAQs for November PBIS FAQs for November

zoom_out_map

Does PBIS take a lot of effort at first and then become more natural?

Successful initiatives follow multiple stages of implementation: exploration/adoption, installation, initial implementation, elaboration, and continuous regeneration. At this time, some schools are in the installation phase and others are undergoing initial implementation. During the installation phase, PBIS teams will develop tools and systems to be used during the initial implementation. It is possible schools will not implement pieces of the framework until August 2023, and over the next few years, PBIS teams will continue to develop Tier 2 and Tier 3 systems and practices. Overall, a lot of time and resources are allocated to the development of this new framework. As pieces are in place and being implemented, the effort may seem to decrease or be focused on other areas of implementation.

How does PBIS work for each school given the differences in population?

PBIS is not a cookie-cutter solution. Because each school is unique, PBIS teams individualize the tools for their school based on the population they serve. Remember, PBIS is a framework as opposed to a curriculum or system, and because it is a framework, it should target schools' specific needs.

The purpose of this study was to assess whether praise-to-reprimand ratios (PRRs) affect class-wide on-task behavior, to identify if PRRs affect on-task behavior, disruptive behavior, and grades for students at risk for emotional or behavioral disorders (EBD), and to determine if there is an optimal PRR. Twenty-eight general education teachers participated in the study.

Weekly Wellness: Cold Weather Safety

It can be nice to stay cozy indoors on cold days, but there are many benefits of going outside year-round. Fresh air, a chance to get vitamin D, and exposure to natural light are all great benefits of spending some time outdoors. Here are some cold weather tips to keep in mind this fall/winter:

  1. Layer your clothes. Try to wear light, warm clothing under a wind-resistant jacket to stay comfortable.
  2. Drink enough water. In the summer, it’s easy to notice when you are thirsty, but our bodies still need water in the winter. Take note of how much you’re drinking and pack a water bottle for all outdoor activities.
  3. Check in on your sleep. Getting enough sleep keeps your immune system strong in the winter months. If you’re struggling to fall asleep, consider sticking to a routine and limiting screen time before bed.
  4. Take care of your skin. Your hands may be feeling dry after all of the frequent handwashing! To prevent skin irritation, apply a moisturizing hand lotion after washing your hands or using hand sanitizer.
