As we are in the last week of October, we are surrounded by the beautiful colors of fall and enjoying delicious pumpkin-flavored treats and harvest foods. Our culinary arts students recently prepared ntsadigo’i (kneel down bread) for our staff — a true delight (see photo on the side).

At TCS, we continue to provide incredible opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. This year, we are excited to introduce Land Exertion as part of our curriculum, offering hands-on activities and cultural learning. It is a fantastic chance for our students to deepen their connection to our rich heritage while learning in an educational setting.

A heartfelt thank you to all parents and guardians for entrusting us with the education of your children. We truly appreciate your support and look forward to your continued involvement in our school community. Be sure to join us for our Annual Fall Festival, Veteran's Day and To'Hajiilee Week!

Our guests had the honor to ride on the Warrior Bus with Anthony Romero as our driver. Each student shared their personal perspective on why these resources are needed. Lunch was provided by our talented Culinary Arts students, under the direction of Joshua Nez, our Culinary Arts Teacher. It was truly a great day of advocacy and learning for our students and staff!

Robotics Team in Full Swing

Our Robotics Team is well underway in preparing for the upcoming competition season. Students have been meeting every Saturday — October 18, October 25, and November 1 — from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to design, build, and perfect their robot.

During the first two Saturdays, the team focused on constructing the robot’s structure, working collaboratively to bring their design to life. The following sessions will be dedicated to programming, coding, testing, and rehearsing for competition, ensuring the robot is fully operational and competition-ready. The team is excited to showcase their skills at the first competition, which will take place November 7–9, 2025, in Flagstaff, Arizona, followed by the second competition on December 12–14, 2025, in Kayenta, Arizona. Our students’ dedication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills truly shine through this program, and we can’t wait to see their hard work pay off at competition! Questions, you may speak to the sponsors, Jojie Ceniza or Aiza Boringa.

To’Hajiilee Students Explore College and Career Pathways at NMSU Grants Career Fair

To’Hajiilee Students Explore College and Career Pathways at NMSU Grants Career Fair

Grants, NM – October 8, 2025 — Excitement filled the Fidel Gym at New Mexico State University (NMSU) Grants Campus as students from To’Hajiilee Community School, from freshmen to seniors, arrived to take part in the annual Career Fair. The event, held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., aimed to introduce high school students to college life, career opportunities, and hands-on learning experiences.

Upon arrival, students signed in at the registration table and were greeted by friendly NMSU staff and volunteers. After check-in, they were divided into three groups, each led by a campus tour guide who helped them explore different departments and college facilities.

The campus tour included visits to key areas such as the Business Office, Library, Nursing Building, Success Center, Information Technology (IT) Office, and the Technical Skills Department. Along the way, NMSU representatives shared insights about academic programs, student services, and career pathways available through the university.

One of the highlights of the tour was the hands-on experience at the Technical Skills lab, where several To’Hajiilee students tried out 3D printing. They observed how digital designs are transformed into real objects, sparking curiosity and excitement about technology and

“This experience really opened their eyes,” said one of the accompanying teachers. “Many of our students had never been on a college campus before, so seeing all the resources and possibilities at NMSU Grants was inspiring.”

The Career Fair was part of NMSU Grants’ ongoing effort to connect local high school students with higher education and workforce opportunities — helping them build confidence, explore new interests, and plan for successful futures.

Dual Credit Students Explore Navajo Connections to Horses Through Film

To’Hajiilee Community School’s Dual Credit students are bridging tradition and modern learning through a unique film project that highlights the deep spiritual and cultural relationship between the Navajo people and horses. As part of their Native American Studies capstone course, students are producing a short film that captures how horses have shaped Navajo identity—past and present—through an Indigenous lens.

In September and October, students traveled to the Rio Rancho property of Jennifer and Allen Black for an Equine-Assisted Learning experience. Under the guidance of their instructors, they learned to approach, touch, and groom two gentle horses, aged sixteen and seventeen. The experience emphasized connection, patience, and respect—values rooted in Diné teachings about living in balance, or Hózhó. Students practiced groundwork skills such as leading a horse with a rope, picking up hooves, and lunging. While no riding took place, the focus on communication through body language and trust allowed students to reflect on how Navajo people traditionally understood horses not as property, but as relatives and helpers.

The project goes beyond hands-on experience; it integrates media arts and cultural education. Students applied their camera operation and storytelling skills to film the horses, interview their classmates and teachers, and record presentations throughout the day. Through film, they are exploring how to express Indigenous knowledge and respect for animals in a modern visual format. This approach aligns with To’Hajiilee’s mission to blend academic learning with cultural identity, providing students with both technical and spiritual insights.

The film will document not only the beauty of the horses but also the lessons they teach about humility, leadership, and harmony with nature. “Horses mirror our emotions,” one student reflected, noting how calm energy leads to cooperation—an insight that connects traditional Navajo wisdom with contemporary learning.

A draft of the film is expected to premiere when four students present a filmmaking workshop at the National Indian Education Association Convention in Spokane, Washington. Upon completion, To’Hajiilee Community School plans to share the final version on its website.

Through this project, Dual Credit students are not only earning college credit—they are honoring their ancestors, preserving Navajo values, and telling their story through the power of film.

25th Annual National Indian Education Association (NIEA) Conference in Spokane, Washington.

We are proud to recognize our Dual Credit students — Victoria Apachito, Hayden Barbone, Shaelyn Secatero, and Teo Tsinnajinnie-Carroll — for their remarkable presentation at the 25th Annual National Indian Education Association (NIEA) Conference in Spokane, Washington. Their session, “Reclaiming our Sovereignty through Film Imaging,” was co-presented with Dr. Shawn Secatero, Ms. Jennifer Black, and Ms. Deana Armijo and received praise for its powerful message and creativity.

As part of the conference, the students led a hands-on filmmaking workshop, demonstrating how to use cameras, conduct interviews, and edit short film clips. They not only shared their own projects but also guided other students through the process of creating and documenting stories. This workshop highlighted how filmmaking can preserve sovereignty, culture, and history while also supporting spiritual, mental, physical, and social well-being. Participants experienced first-hand the value of artistic expression and the responsibility of telling stories that connect communities across generations.

In addition, our students toured the campus of Gonzaga University and Fairchild Air Force Base, expanding their educational and career horizons. These experiences provided insight into higher education pathways and military service opportunities, reinforcing the importance of preparation, leadership, and cultural pride. The professionalism and dedication our students displayed reflect the high expectations and values of To’Hajiilee Community School. They are role models not only for their peers but also for our entire community, showing how youth leadership and cultural identity can shine on a national stage. Their accomplishments are a true source of inspiration for future generations.
