Patriot Week Information - September 11th through September 17th
Your students may be learning more about, and completing assignments related to, relevant topics tied to Patriot Week this week, as well as at various other points throughout the year. We are sharing this information with you for awareness purposes.
School Meal Information - Update on Free Meals
*In case you have not heard, the Brighton Area Schools School Board has voted to extended free meals for students (breakfast and lunch) through the end of October. Additional updates will be provided on the rest of the year as it becomes available.
Dear Parents,
We’d like to share some important information about Free & Reduced-Price Meal eligibility. While all students currently receive meals at no cost through the Michigan School Meals Program, qualifying for Free or Reduced-Price Meals can provide additional benefits for your child and family—including reduced fees for school activities, athletics, and testing.
In past years, most students’ eligibility was determined through a process called Direct Certification. This automatically qualifies students without the need for families to apply. However, this year Direct Certification has not identified as many eligible students as in the past.
If your child has qualified for Free or Reduced-Price Meals in previous years but you have not received a notification this year, you may need to complete a short application. Also, if you feel that you may now qualify, you should fill out this application as well (Link to Qualification Standards). The good news—it’s quick and simple to do!
Paper applications are available in all schools.
Applications can also be printed from the district website.
An online Application is available on Parent Connect
If you are unsure of your eligibility status or have any questions, please call the Food Service Office at 810-299-4175 and we’ll be happy to help.
Thank you for taking a few minutes to ensure your child receives all the benefits they are entitled to.
Sincerely,
The Brighton Area Schools Student Nutrition Department

Supporting Students through the McKinney-Vento Act
Brighton Area Schools is part of a county-wide consortium dedicated to supporting students who
are experiencing temporary living situations. Through this program, students can receive:
- Assistance with educational expenses
- Housing referrals
- Access to clothing and other essentials
- General support and technical assistance
To comply with federal law, staff and families are encouraged to help identify students who may
be living in:
- Emergency shelters or transitional housing
- Motels or hotels
- Cars, parks, or public spaces
- Shared housing due to loss of housing or financial hardship
- Temporary arrangements with someone other than a parent or guardian
Our district’s homeless liaison is Starr Acromite, and each building has trained staff available to
provide support. Brighton also partners with Candice Olrich at the Livingston Educational
Service Agency.
For more information or assistance, please contact building principal, Matt Evans or Starr Acromite
at 810-299-4040. An informational flyer can also be found here.
Advisory Period Update
Students' Advisory Period will be moving to after 2nd Hour. The new schedule is provided here. We are planning to start Advisory, THIS WEDNESDAY, September 17th. All students received an email from Mrs. Richards earlier this morning outlining all details and providing additional specifics.
One additional resource I'd like to share with you is a calendar showing you which Wednesdays we will have Advisory. It is NOT every Wednesday. When we have shortened weeks for “no school” days, Advisory is almost always cancelled that week. Please refer to this calendar if you have questions about whether we are having Advisory or not. This will be updated for you as the year progresses.
9th Grade Vision Screening Information
Please see the message below from the Livingston County Health Department regarding 9th Grade Vision Screening for the upcoming school year:
Unfortunately, due to budget and staffing constraints, the Livingston County Health Department will not be able to offer vision screenings onsite for the 2025/2026 school year. We have included a flyer that can be posted informing parents of the changes this year. Office appointments are offered free of charge and can be made on the county website https://bit.ly/LCHDAppt
Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Homecoming Guest Applications - Due Friday, October 10th
Homecoming Guest Applications are available now in the Main Office. I have also included a copy here. Please make sure you/your student are reading the application in its entirety to ensure any guest meets the approved criteria and all parties involved are aware of the expectations if approved to attend.
- Guest Applications are due to the Main Office by 2:30 pm on Friday, October 10th.
- Please be aware that the application requires both a signature by the guest's current principal AND a parent signature. Applications without both signatures will not be accepted, so please have your student(s) plan accordingly.
- Guests who do not bring their ID, or who do not have guest applications on file may be denied entry to the dance, regardless of if a ticket has been purchased or not.
Freshmen Class Council Interviews - Tuesday, September 16th
Last week we held elections for members of the Freshmen Class Council. These results were sent to students on Friday. If they ran and unfortunately weren't elected, or if they missed signing up to participate in the election, there is still an opportunity to interview on to the Freshmen Class Council. Please see the message below from our Freshmen Class Council and their Advisors:
Dear Freshman Students,
Thank you to everyone who ran and was elected to the Freshman Class Council. We will be conducting interviews to fill three open positions. The positions are:
- Historian
- Public Relator
- KLAA Representative
We would love to have any student interested in interviewing come to interviews on Tuesday the 16th. Interviews will be taking place from 2:30 to 3:15 in Mrs. Baxter's Room (Room F-28).
NHS Veterans Appreciation Night Football Game
National Honor Society is organizing an event to honor and pay respect to those who have served our country at next week's home football game. If you know a veteran that would like to be recognized, we invite them to join us before the kickoff against Hartland. Attendees will be guided by our NHS students at the event, so all we need is for them to arrive by 6:15pm. Veterans and one guest will also receive free admission to the game. An informational flyer that can be shared can be found here.
Ordering School Pictures
In case you did not receive the school picture ordering form previously, a copy of the form can be found here. Pictures can be ordered online and can be sent to you directly once they are ready (within 7 days of Picture Day).
Your student also should have come home from Registration with a slip from the picture company that looks like this. This slip will allow you to preview your student's picture prior to ordering.
As a reminder, if your student is going to take advantage of our Picture Retake Day, it will take place on October 14th. There will be a new order form issued for that day that will be provided as it gets closer.
Québec 2026 Trip Informational Meeting - 9/18 @ 6:30 pm in Room D-29
The parent and student meeting for the Québec 2026 Trip (Mon, June 15 - Sat, June 20, 2026) will be held on Thursday, Sept. 18th, at 6:30, in Mr. Dufon's Room, D-29. All meetings will be 7:00-8:00pm in the BHS Steam Center. Dates are listed below:

BHS Attendance Policy
We have received a few questions about our attendance policy and if it is new or if there have been changes. Students actually have the ability to miss 1 more day than they have been able to previously. However, if students exceed the allowable number of absences, there may be additional steps that a student may need to participate in to earn credit for the grading period. As always, we will work with you/your student if there are extenuating circumstances, but our goal is to have students in front of their teachers as much as possible as we know it increases the likelihood of their success. The full BHS Attendance Policy is outlined below:
Absences:
Each semester, students will be allowed 9 absences. When the absence is excused, the student will be able to make up missed work/assignments/tests without penalty. If the absence is unexcused, the student will not be able to make up missed work/assignments/tests. Once a student reaches 10 absences (excused or unexcused), he/she may enter into a “loss of credit” status. The student will continue to attend class and work towards academic success. If there are no additional absences, the “loss of credit” status may revert back into course credit with the earned grade. In cases of continued but limited excused absences, the student will have the opportunity to appeal the “loss of credit” status, presenting evidence of extenuating circumstances, and possibly have credit reinstated to their grade level principal.
Please note: Excused absences that WILL NOT count in the (9) day limitation are those for documented medical and court appointments, religious observances, funerals, and those for school business and suspensions.
Per Board Policy 5301, the Building Principal or designee may impose additional consequences for excessive absenteeism, consistent with the student handbook or published grading procedures.
Absentee reports will be run by Administration at progress reports and marking periods throughout the school year. Based on those reports, the following will take place.
*Note: 10 or more absences per semester, student enters a loss of credit status (NC). Every 5 tardies = 1 absence.
** Appeal process goes to the Grade Level Principal for potential credit reinstatement.
Tardies:
Students are allowed 3 tardies per semester without a disciplinary referral. Once a student hits the 4th tardy, they will be sent to their Grade Level Principal for a student conference. The next offense will result in making up time during an after school detention. Multiple offenses will escalate the student discipline. A parent phone call does NOT excuse a tardy.
Upcoming Weekend - Parking for Events @ BHS
This upcoming weekend (19th through the 21st) many of you are aware that Destination Stars Hollow will be returning to downtown Brighton. This event does a fantastic job highlighting what a great downtown we have, and many local businesses are involved in pulling it off. Last year's event resulted in roughly 40,000 people attending, leaving parking at a premium. This year's event will start Friday night, and run through Sunday. I would anticipate BHS parking lots being used heavily, so if you/your student are supposed to be at BHS for any events this weekend (especially Saturday and Sunday) I would encourage you to plan accordingly as you may end up parking further away than you would otherwise normally.
Pink Week Information - Pink Week Shirts and Sponsorship Opportunities
Pink Week Shirts
- As many of you know who have experienced it, Pink Week is one of the best weeks of the year at BHS! Our entire school and the Brighton community come together through both school and community-wide events to raise money for the Trinity Health Cancer Center in Brighton. More information will be coming out as the week gets closer. We appreciate any and all support this week as it is a fantastic opportunity to raise money for a great cause and to keep funds local! We also have shirts available for purchase via the BHS school store, The Paw.
- Due to overwhelming support, shirt sizes available online are limited, however, only a portion of the inventory was made available online for purchase. We do, however, have inventory available for in-person purchase is sizes that are not showing as available online. Your student will be able to purchase items directly from The Paw starting on 9/22 during all lunches.
- Online orders will be available for pick up at BHS (or delivery to BAS employees) starting on 9/22/25. As always, 100% of proceeds generated by The Paw from Pink Week items will go toward BAS' donation to the Trinity Health Cancer Center in Brighton.
Pink Week Sponsorship Opportunities
- In addition to participating in BHS' Pink Week events, we are also offering businesses the opportunity to serve as Pink Week Sponsors or make donations to our Pink Week Raffle. If you or someone you know may be interested in participating in either of these opportunities to support a great cause, feel free to share our Pink Week Sponsorship and Donation Flyer.

Digital Readiness Check and PSAT 11 Info - Includes General and BHS-specific Information
We know the school year just started, but the PSAT for our current Juniors is coming quick this year! The information included below are the basics for what you need to know for planning purposes:
- Juniors will take the PSAT on Wednesday, October 8th this year in the morning. BHS-specific Information on this PSAT test for our Juniors can be found here.
- PSAT Testing will take place in the Aux Gym and Fieldhouse (just like this past year). All other students will attend class as they normally would.
- Prior to taking the PSAT, all Juniors are required to complete a Digital Readiness Check. This will be done during Advisory on Wednesday, October 1st. The schedule for where students will be completing their Digital Readiness Check will come out as the date gets closer.
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is structured similarly to the SAT and is a wonderful practice before the spring SAT. It has the same sections and timing, and measures the Reading and Writing and Math skills needed to succeed in college and career. Attached is the PSAT Student Guide with some practice tips and information on scholarships.
October is Michigan College Month!
Michigan College Month is part of the American College Application Campaign, a national initiative with the goal to provide every graduating high school senior the opportunity to apply to college and for financial aid. Special focus is placed on assisting students who would be the first in their families to attend college and students who may not have otherwise seriously considered applying to college. Michigan College Month emphasizes the relationship between applying to and paying for college and helps break down some of the most complex and commonly cited barriers to attending college.
We will have different events going on in October in promotion of Michigan College Month, but also have some resources to share as well. In addition to the student resources already linked, additional resources on fee-free applications/application fee waivers are provided below:
AP Test Fee Payment Deadline - Friday, October 31st
This year, if students want to take their AP exam in May, they must register online in AP Classroom and pay for their AP exam in Parent Connect by October 31, 2025. Each exam is $100 unless a student is eligible for reduced fees due to demonstrated financial need. For students or families who feel they qualify for reduced fees, please email Jennifer Napuli (napulij@brightonk12.com), so she can assist with the process.

Senior Questionnaire - Class of 2026
If you attended the Future Senior Parent Meeting, you learned more about the Senior Questionnaire. Many scholarships, college applications, etc., require letters of recommendation to be submitted in order to be considered. This document is extremely helpful for anyone you may be asking for a letter of recommendation (teachers, grade level principal, counselor, coaches, employers, etc.) and will go a long way in helping ensure the letter of recommendation you receive is a quality on. A few reminders are listed below:
- When you submit your Senior Questionnaire, it will generate an email with your responses included. We would recommend printing this and providing a copy to anyone you are asking to write a letter for you.
- If you are going to be asking for letters of recommendation, ask early, well before the deadline. Many of the people you will be asking will have many letters to write, so advance notice in requesting, and patience afterward is much appreciated.
- You are unable to submit applications via College Board prior to August 1st. Take your time in completing your Senior Questionnaire and be sure to provide as much information within each category/question as you can to aid your recommenders.
Class of 2026 Remind Codes - Students Only
In addition to our various social media accounts, one of the ways in which we share important information with the Senior class is through the use of the Remind App. We will share the same information with parents via weekly emails, however, students seem to do a better job receiving the information through Remind. Please help us by encouraging your student(s) to join the correct Remind group using the join codes below (alphabetical by last name):
Last Name A - E: @bhssr26a-e
Last Name F - L: @bhssr26f-l
Last Name M - P: @bhssr26m-p
