CVHS BiWeekly Message
For the Week Beginning April 22, 2024
Crescenta Valley High School Weekly Schedule for April 22 - 26, 2024
- NO LATE START on April 22nd - Regular A Day
- NO SCHOOL on April 24th - Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide
Greetings Falcons!!
April is Arab American Heritage Month. I made a mistake in the last Biweekly when I said that April is Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month. That is actually in May. I left out Arab American Heritage Month. Please see this link for important information about the history of this recognition and the contributions that Arab Americans have made. Thank you
Parents: For the past three years, Glendale Unified has implemented a 7-period block schedule at every middle and high school. We would like to hear your thoughts about the benefits and challenges of both the block schedule (longer periods, not every period every day) AND the 7-period schedule (7 classes within the regular school day, no 0 period). You should have received an email from Glendale Unified School District on April 12 with a short survey. Please complete the survey by Friday, April 26. Consider the block schedule and the 7-period schedule separately. We sent our middle and high school students a similar survey to get their opinions.
Students: The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee is joining with ASB and students from CVTV to create a subcommittee that will be responsible for planning activities and events for next school year (2024-25). We will be meeting in June 2024 to plan for the year. If you are interested in participating, please use this form to let us know. Thank you!

Parent DEI Committee News
We have held seven Parent DEI committee meetings so far this year. The mission of our committee is:
The CV DEI committee works to champion inclusiveness within our school campus environment. We are energized around a harmonious vision of inclusion of all marginalized communities. This is done through:
adult role modeling
fostering dialogue within our diverse membership which is reflective of our school campus population
creating a think tank that works to bring our community together
supporting the student committee
Contact cbenitez@gusd.net with any questions or inquiries.
Those objectives include:
Creating a list of community service opportunities for our students
Finding/researching visuals for the school that are representative of our student body
Working on a Focus Group opportunity
Supporting the student DEI committee on the 3/7/24 Cultural and Community Event
Thank you to the parents who participated. We are very excited about our future. You must be the parent/guardian of a current CV student to participate. Please email me at cbenitez@gusd.net if you are interested in participating in this committee.

If you or any parent you know would like to participate in a roundtable discussion with Gavin Newsom's partner about youth mental health, please email Beth Bythrow from NAMI Glendale and let them know you are a CV parent interested in attending the event. bethbythrow@namiglendale.org
Beth does a lot with NAMI to bring more mental health awareness into schools, and is a dedicated advocate for youth mental health. She shared this opportunity for parents to voice their concerns and needs. It could be an interesting experience for a parent with lived experience raising a child with symptoms.
Here is more info on the event:
The California Partners Project is coordinating a youth mental health event in Los Angeles on May 7th which will be held in partnership with the Office of the Partner, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the California Health and Human Services Department, and the Child Mind Institute. (Time and venue TBD soon).
We are working with various local organizations to recruit teen and parent leaders to participate in a moderated roundtable discussion with the First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom and two other VIP guests. The roundtable will provide an opportunity to listen to CA caregivers and teens, and engage in a dialogue about common issues that impact their mental health and well-being. This portion of the event will be closed to the press with an internal photographer present.
Following the roundtable, there will be a moderated panel discussion featuring the First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, 2-3 VIP guests, and a teen representative from the roundtable. This segment will reflect on insights from the roundtable and explore solutions to the ongoing youth mental health crisis. The panel discussion will be open to the press and live-streamed, with other parents and teens from the roundtable encouraged to attend as audience members.
