Newsletter 1 Term 3
Onerahi School Friday 01 August
Te Karere o te Tumuaki/Principal's Message
Kia ora e te whānau,
A warm welcome back to all our tamariki, staff, and whānau for Term 3! We hope you had a restful and enjoyable break, and we're pleased to see everyone back, refreshed and ready for a term full of learning and fun. We’re looking forward to Mathex, Cross Country and the upcoming school photos. We are also coming closer to completion date for the new build. There will be an opening and blessing for this. Keep an eye out for the communications about these events.
We have an exciting term ahead with lots of engaging experiences and topics planned. Last week’s book character parade and author talk were highlights already. We were blown away by the efforts that went into costumes. It was incredible! We would also like to thank our friends from the New Zealand Police who are in to work with our tamariki in the Keeping Ourselves Safe programme in weeks 3 and 4.
There is a lot of sickness around and we ask that if your child is unwell, please allow them to stay home and recover. Germs spread very quickly in a confined classroom space. However, being at school is important for the success of your tamariki so please send them every day if they are healthy. As always, we encourage open communication between home and school. If you have any questions, concerns, or just want to chat about your child's progress, please don't hesitate to get in touch with their teacher.
We're looking forward to a fantastic Term 3 together!

Tumuaki Whakahihi / Proud Principal time
It is great to be able to celebrate so many of our wonderful tamariki. Over the past few weeks, AnnMaree MacGregor and Grace Williams have had the pleasure of having morning tea with the following fabulous students:
Room 16 - Dustyn Guiney and Max Hitchcock, Rm 22 - Olivia Akast, Rm 6 - Tyler Da Silva and Isla Cavanagh, Rm 4 - Amy Carman, Rm 8 - Memphis Ekman and Rm 9 - Malia Hauraki
These tamariki make our school a great place to be and their actions display our school values of manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and manawa reka.
Book Character Parade
On Tuesday the 22nd of July our kura was home to a large range of interesting characters as our annual Book Character Parade was held in honour of school library week. There were a lot of creative costumes, lovingly made, as well as plenty of "familiar faces" to spot. The parade is a hit with staff and students alike, and thank you from us to all community members and whānau who joined us for the event.
Triennial Board Elections Update
Nominations are now open and all eligible voters should have received a nomination form from our Returning Officer. If you have not received this, and are interested in standing, please pop by the office and pick up a form. A copy of the electoral roll for the current election is also available on request.
Kokonga o Kirsty/Kirsty's Corner
Kia ora e te whānau,
What a big term it has been already in the library. We celebrated Library Week, the highlight of which was our annual Book Character Parade. It was great to see so much thought and effort go into costumes, thank you to all those who took part. We also wish to extend a very big thank you to author June Pitman-Hayes who spent the day with our tamariki on the Thursday the 24th.
The library recently received a donated copy of "Mishka and the Bad Bears" by Janinka Greenwod. Janinka has links to Onerahi Primary, having taught here many years ago. The book is one she has written and published to raise funds for the rebuild of schools in Ukraine.
Coming up, we have another author visit from Sam Smith on the 19th of August as part of the Storylines Tour for 2025. Sam is an author, comedian, and comedy writer and we are sure his visit will be very entertaining.

Honey
Once again, in 2025 we have honey available for purchase at the school office. Honey has been kindly donated by our partner beekeepers - Tahi honey, and we have further been gifted larger sized jars of Honeyeater honey - also from local Pataua hives. The honey is priced amazingly from $5 per jar (250gm) to $20 (the big 1 kg jars) so why not pop in and pick some up. With winter bugs already rolling through, it's great to have on hand.
2nd hand Uniform
Uniforms come and uniforms go! Stock levels are constantly dropping on our school shirts in many of the sizes. Especially the bigger ones! (Size 10,12,14 etc). If your child has outgrown their uniform and you have no further need of it, please feel free to drop it in to the school office. The sales of these help the school purchase additional items that our former PTA used to supply, such as sunscreen, etc. Stocks are depleting again now of the jackets and jumpers and there are few to be found in most sizes. The price has returned to $10 but it's still a great bargain!

Reminders/Ngā manatu
Winter
We are officially in our colder months and we are seeing a more and more of the sprinkly stuff. A reminder that the Kids Can jackets (Warriors branded, or plain) are able to be worn as part of our uniform on cold or wet days. We do recommend that through the wetter months, tamariki bring a spare change of clothes, just in case they get caught out. We do not have a large supply here at school and cannot guarantee there will be suitable clothes to change into.

We would like to remind all whānau that during school hours, your child is expected to be present and learning. Where possible, we ask that appointments be scheduled outside of school hours, so as not to impact on your child's learning. We also ask that every effort is made to arrive at school in time for learning at 9am.
IMPORTANT NOTICES/TINO PANUI NUI
Medication: If your child requires medication to be brought or kept at school, please be aware that due to health and safety concerns, this must be kept secure in the school sick bay. It is not to be kept in children’s schoolbags during the day. This is to protect the safety of not only the child requiring the medication but also all other students. All medication requires an accompanying permission/approval form signed by their parent or caregiver. This includes epi-pens for allergy management, inhalers for asthma or any other medication your child requires on a short-term or as needed basis.
