“Attendance Calls – What You Need to Know

Getting automated calls about your student’s absence, even after reporting it? Here’s why.

Once a student reaches 10 absences, any absence moving forward will be marked unexcused and will result in an automated call unless documentation is provided.

We send two calls daily: one in the late morning and one in the afternoon. If a call is missed, it may be repeated.

You may receive a call if your student:
• Misses one or more periods
• Misses over half a class period
• Misses a full day that is considered unexcused

To excuse your student, please call the Attendance Hotline: 913-993-6945

  • Bison Standard Staff Members of the Week- Our award winner this week is Erin Adan. Erin is transforming our Job Skills classes by operating three separate entities at SMN. These entities provide students with food, hygiene products, and a food market that connects ALL of our students. This past week, she helped orchestrate a partnership with Golden Scoop, which led to over 250 scoops of ice cream sold and a visit from Heidi Gardner.

Students of the Week Students of the Week

  • Elite of North- Our award winner this week is Kempis McCarthy. Kempis is an honor student, an accomplished ceramic artist, and a top-rated powerlifter in the state of Kansas! Wow!

  • I AM NORTH- Our award winner this week is Emi Campbell. Emi performed the National Anthem before Tuesday’s basketball game. The microphone malfunctioned, but Emi proceeded to hold the entire Fieldhouse with her remarkable voice!

  • Heart of North- Our award winner this week is Winter Hampton. Her nominator said “At the beginning of anime club this week, Winter jumped in and helped clean up a project without being asked and invited other students to help out as well. She also brings a positive fun energy to the school and our Anime club.” We were not able to get a photo of Winter, but we still want to celebrate her!

Student Panorama Survey Results Student Panorama Survey Results

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Shawnee Mission North High School would like to thank you for being our valued partners as we work together to educate and support the students in our district. Students whose parents provided consent during the registration process participated in the Panorama Social-Emotional Learning survey in October through November. This survey measures student’s perception of skills in the areas of grit, growth mindset and self-management, as well as teacher-student relationships and school climate. On the following page, there is a brief description of each of these categories.

Educators and education researchers agree that students with strong SEL skills exhibit more confidence, persistence, empathy and a greater sense of purpose. Moreover, when schools make SEL a priority, they see more positive behaviors and relationships with peers and adults, reduced conduct problems and risk-taking behavior, decreased emotional distress, improved test scores, better grades and higher attendance. Ultimately, greater social and emotional competence can increase the likelihood of high school graduation and readiness for postsecondary education career success (Weissberg, 2016). Finally, Panorama for Social-Emotional Learning gives educators resources to use as part of their regular classroom instruction to support the social and emotional development of their students.

We would like to encourage you to view and consider your student's 2025-2026 Fall Student Competency results. You can do so in Skyward by following these steps:

  1. Log into Family Access in Skyward

  2. Choose your student(s)

  3. Choose “Grade Cards & Academic Awards”

  4. Choose Panorama Fall 2025

When viewing your student results, remember every student grows and matures at different rates and in different ways. A decrease in a certain category does not necessarily indicate a problem. Scores should be seen as an opportunity to talk with your student, your student’s teachers and other school professionals about ways to uphold and support them. Results also provide an opportunity to discuss areas where your student is demonstrating strengths. If, after viewing your student’s results, you are interested in talking more about them, please reach out to your student’s teacher, social worker, counselor, or building administrator.

Thank you again for your ongoing support of our school, staff and students. For more information about the Panorama Social Emotional Learning Survey, including a look at all of the questions asked at each grade level, please visit this site.

Thank you,

Laura Brogdon

Associate Principal

Robotics Club - Nerd Herd

This week in robotics club, we adjusted the size of our shooter mechanism so that it fits on the robot and can intake and shoot balls from the floor. We'll be testing this and practicing driving the robot later this week. We also sold various flavors of cotton candy at the basketball game last Friday, and will continue to sell at home games when we can. We’ve started making buttons to give out to other teams at competitions. Speaking of competitions, we’re about a month away from our first comp, and we’re making good progress. Have a great week!

There are so many ways you can make a difference:

👉Donate items or funds

Well North......... sadly our boys swim and dive season has come to a close. We had an exciting State Meet with another Top 10 finish in Diving with Cullen Bartlett who had a fantastic meet, two great 100 Breaststrokes from Caleb Guild to finish top 16 (14th), and a 200 Freestyle Relay (Dakota Rominger, Lincoln Bell, Josh Green and Caleb Guild) that squeaked into the Consolation Final and then moved up a spot to finish 15th with their best time of the season (1:35.03).

Our two other relays also competed, with the 200 Medley Relay of Caleb Guild, Silas Bell, Asher Hallagin and Dakota Rominger swimming a season best time (1:46.86) and finished 17th. The 400 Free Relay of Josh Green, Asher Hallagin, Lincoln Bell and Dakota Rominger swam a 3:41.93 to post a season best for those 4 boys but missed finals.

We say good luck to all our graduating seniors and we look forward to next season and how we can continue getting better.

National Letter of Intent (NLI) now known as Athletic Aid agreements. We will host a spring NLI signing for ALL our student-athletes on Wednesday, April 22 in the FH. However, if a family wants to celebrate their student-athlete individually that is an option. In either situation families are responsible for hosting this event but we will help with set-up, student announcements, etc. It is imperative families provide the school at least two weeks advance notice if you host an individual signing.

We will provide the student-athlete with a placard with their picture and attending college. Families and student-athletes will provide decorations and any desserts or treats for friends and families.

Coaches have been provided questionnaires so we can communicate directly with our student-athletes who have already made a decision.

Each of the scholarships is awarded to a graduating senior student athlete based on their excellence in the classroom, athletic participation and involvement in the community. The scholarships are named after former SM North coaches and a memorial in the name of a SMN graduate. Each of the scholarships provides a living legacy.

The board members are Cindy Howard Collins, Jim Gillespie, John Mitchelson and Cathy Gerber Phillips, George Sallas and Jim Ballou. The Foundation receives enormous support from over 20 members at large. New members are always welcomed.

Vision:

PTSA PTSA

A HUGE thank you to everyone who donated food, money, and their time to help take care of our incredible staff at SMN! Your generosity truly means the world. ♥️

We believe in supporting the people who pour so much into our kids every single day and when our North community shows up, we SHOW UP BIG! 🙌

This is what community looks like. This is what caring looks like. And we are SO grateful.

THANK YOU, North community!! You’re simply the best!! 💫

We’re trying something new this year, and we’d love your help to make it a success! The PTSA is hosting an After Prom event to give our kids a safe place to celebrate, have fun, and earn raffle prizes throughout the night.

We’ve created a SignUpGenius with all the activities and ideas we’re planning. As long as we have enough volunteers to help run each area, we’re ready to make it happen!

There are so many ways you can make a difference:

👉Donate items or funds
👉Help secure sponsorships
👉Volunteer to run an activity
👉Assist with setup or cleanup

If you’re able to help in any way, please check out the link below to see where you can jump in. Once you sign up, someone will reach out with more details.

Thank you for helping us create a fun, safe, and memorable night for our students! 🎉

Hey Bison students, teachers, and families!

We’re on the lookout for those BROC forms that are due on the last day of February each year, the ones that list your volunteer hours supporting our community.

In April, the PTSA, with Jill Molina leading the way, will host a special ceremony to celebrate YOU and all the amazing work you’ve done to help our community!

If you have questions or need help, please let us know, we’re happy to help!
