Katie Gurklis - Speech & Language Pathologist

I am an avid reader and coffee drinker. I love spending outside with my husband and son, Bryson. We also have a small dog with big energy named Beau. We have a garden that has expanded every year and we love cooking with our veggies! I also love baking and Bryson is a fun helper. I am also passionate about communication and ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard. I am outside in the mornings (the K-2 door) and do my best to greet students as they walk into the building. I want students to know that we want them there and we care about them. I’m excited to see all the growth our students make this year!

Italian American Heritage Month Italian American Heritage Month

October is Italian American Heritage Month! This month, we celebrate the many contributions that Italian Americans have made to our nation’s history, culture, and community. From art and music to science, education, and public service, Italian American heritage is woven into the fabric of our country. At Neubert, we honor and appreciate the rich traditions, stories, and values that continue to inspire pride, family, and community spirit. 💚🤍❤️

Ways Families Can Celebrate Italian American Heritage Month

  • 🍝 Cook a Family Recipe – Try making a classic Italian dish together, like pasta, lasagna, or homemade pizza. Talk about where the recipe comes from and what it means to your family.

  • 📚 Read a Book by an Italian American Author – Explore stories like Strega Nona by Tomie dePaola or Papa Piccolo by Carol Talley for younger readers.

  • 🎶 Listen to Italian Music – Enjoy traditional Italian songs or famous artists like Andrea Bocelli and Louis Prima while cooking or spending time together.

  • 🏛️ Learn About Italian American History – Visit online resources or local museums to discover the contributions of Italian Americans to art, science, and culture.

  • 🎬 Watch an Italian-Themed Family Movie – Cozy up for a family night with films like Luca (Disney Pixar), which celebrates friendship, courage, and Italian coastal life.

  • 🖌️ Create Italian-Inspired Art – Paint the Italian flag, design a family crest, or make pasta necklaces as a fun craft project.

  • 🌍 Learn a Few Italian Words – Practice greetings or simple phrases like “Ciao” (hello), “Grazie” (thank you), or “Buona giornata” (have a good day!).

  • 🍦 Enjoy an Italian Treat – End the month with a trip for gelato or by making cannoli or biscotti at home.

Polish American Heritage Month Polish American Heritage Month

October is Polish American Heritage Month! This month, we celebrate the rich history, culture, and contributions of Polish Americans to our nation and communities. From art, music, and literature to science, faith, and public service, Polish Americans have helped shape the story of our country. Families can take this opportunity to learn about Polish traditions, enjoy delicious foods like pierogi and paczki, and explore the values of family, hard work, and pride that continue to inspire generations. 💙🤍❤️

Ways Families Can Celebrate Polish American Heritage Month

  • 🥟 Cook a Traditional Polish Dish – Try making pierogi (dumplings), kielbasa (sausage), or golabki (stuffed cabbage). Cooking together is a great way to explore culture through food!

  • 📚 Read Stories with Polish Roots – Enjoy children’s books like The Trumpeter of Krakow by Eric P. Kelly or Marie Curie’s Search for Radium by Beverley Birch to learn about Polish culture and history.

  • 🎶 Listen to Polish Music – Explore traditional folk music featuring the accordion or listen to classical pieces by famous Polish composers like Frédéric Chopin.

  • 🎨 Create Polish-Inspired Art – Make paper cutouts (Wycinanki), decorate eggs (Pisanki), or color the Polish flag together.

  • 🌍 Learn a Few Polish Words – Practice simple phrases like “Dzień dobry” (Hello), “Dziękuję” (Thank you), or “Proszę” (Please).

  • 🏛️ Explore Polish American History – Research famous Polish Americans such as Marie Curie, Tadeusz Kościuszko, or General Pulaski, who played important roles in science and American independence.

  • 🎬 Watch a Family-Friendly Movie – Films like The Magic Tree (a Polish children’s adventure film) can help families learn more about Polish storytelling and creativity.

  • 🎉 Attend a Polish Festival or Cultural Event – If available in your area, visit a Polish festival or cultural center to experience traditional music, dance, and food firsthand.

  • 🍩 Enjoy a Sweet Treat – End the celebration with a trip for paczki (Polish donuts) or by baking your own at home!

National Bullying Prevention Month is observed annually in October to raise awareness about the impacts of bullying and to promote kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. The month-long campaign, led by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center, encourages people to unite against bullying and features a signature event called Unity Day on October 22nd, where participants wear and share the color orange to show support. Our teachers will be providing lessons and discussions that are designed to help students build empathy, strengthen relationships, and promote a culture of kindness and respect in our school throughout the entire month of October.

Updated 10/10/25

Our Lost and Found is bursting with lonely jackets, water bottles, and sweatshirts that are hoping to find their way back home! Please take a look at the pictures we’ve shared to see if any of these items belong to your child. To help our “lost treasures” get back to their owners even faster, we’d love for you to add your child’s name inside their belongings. That way, we can return them right away before they end up on another adventure in the Lost and Found!
