Wiggin Street Parent Update
November 7, 2024
Better Together
Families,
We have enjoyed seeing so many of you at Parent/Teacher Conferences! Thank you for taking the time to collaborate with us to best serve your student. We are proud of the growth your children are showing and happy to have conversations about ways to meet specific needs. If at anytime throughout the year you would like to meet to check in on their continued progress, please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks to all that volunteered to help with the Book Fair this week! This is a highlight for the kids, and it's great to see them excited about purchasing books and shopping for their wish list. Also, thank you to those that provided dinner for teachers last night and lunch today. It was greatly appreciated!
Next Tuesday, we have Donuts with Grownups at 8:00 am in the gym and following will be our flag ceremony for Veterans Day observance. We would like to invite any Veterans that are available to attend, so you may be recognized. All are welcome, and we hope to see you!
Lastly, Wiggin Street Elementary teachers have been discussing the pros and cons of assigning homework to students. The National PTA and National Education Association support the "10 minute homework rule" which recommends 10 minutes of homework per grade level, per night (10 minutes for first grade, 20 minutes for second grade, and so on. (Cooper, 2010) To further our research, we would appreciate receiving your feedback as parents. Please complete a survey for each of your Wiggin Street students. Links are provided below by grade level. Thank you.
Best wishes,
Christy Grandstaff

PTO Corner
Our next Friends of Wiggin Street meeting will be November 11th at 5:00 pm in the gym. We will have a quick meeting and then tear down the book fair and set up for Donuts with Grownups.
Scholastic Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair will be open during Parent/Teacher Conferences. Students will also be able to purchase items on Monday, November 11th in the morning school hours.
Donuts with Grown-ups
Please join us on Tuesday, November 12th at 8:00 am in the gym! Donuts, juice, and coffee will be provided for any student and their grown-up to share together. Immediately following at 9:10 am will be a Veterans Day Observance Flag Ceremony on the front lawn. All are welcome, and we love to recognize any Veterans in attendance!
Veterans Day
We will be having a flag ceremony, weather permitting, with our students on the morning of Tuesday, November 12th in observance of Veterans Day. We would like to invite any Veterans that are available to attend, so you may be recognized. The flag ceremony will take place on the front lawn around 9:10 am and is the same day as our "Donuts with Grownups" that begins at 8:00 am, so all are welcome to observe the ceremony which will include the flag raising, Pledge of Allegiance, poems, and the National Anthem.
Catch Me if You Can
5th Grade learned about how energy flows in an ecosystem in a fun game called, "Catch Me if You Can".
Food for the Hungry
Wiggin Street will be participating in the annual Food for the Hungry drive from November 18-22. Each class will have a collection box. Students can contribute non-perishable food or monetary donations. The Top 10 items needed for our local pantries include Canned meat, Beef stew/hearty soup, Pasta, pasta sauce, instant potatoes, instant rice, Hot/cold cereal, peanut butter, canned fruit & vegetables.
Though non-food donations are welcome, cash donations are encouraged because $1.00 -- donated is equivalent to $4.56 of buying power through the Mid-Ohio Collective. Checks should be made payable to Food For The Hungry. All donations collected in each school will stay in the community in which they were donated. These students are asked to demonstrate the idea that no one is too young to make a difference and that the community is better when we work together!
As in the past, the classroom in each participating school that contributes the highest number of food items per student will be treated to a pizza party sponsored by Psi Iota Xi.
The top donor from each school will be honored in the Food For The Hungry broadcast at the Knox County Memorial Building on Friday, Dec. 13. The students will be recognized on our live video stream at www.mvnu.tv, as well as on 100.9 FM and 13WMVO, with reports given on WNZR and 93.7 the Super Q.
To learn more about FFTH, donate, or find photos, videos, and more, visit www.FoodForTheHungryCares.org. To volunteer with FFTH, call or text Kathy Brechler at 740-398-2408. The 2023 FFTH Live Broadcast will take place on Friday, Dec. 13 at the Memorial Theater inside the Knox Memorial.
Kindergarten
Kiwanis members, Levi Curry and Matia Mathews, both from Park National Bank, have returned again this year to read to our Kindergarteners! Students are also learning to win and lose playing musical chairs as well as writing skyline letters.
