Mr. Macken's Message
Centerville Families,
It was wonderful being out in the community caroling and seeing so many Centerville families. As winter break approaches, I want to wish you safe and enjoyable travels as you spend time with family and loved ones or head out to other destinations. This time of year can be joyful, but it can also bring added stress for children and families.
With that in mind, I wanted to share a helpful article on holiday stress for children. Click HERE to read the article.
Below are several ways parents can support children during the holiday season:
- Discuss holiday plans well in advance and involve children in decisions when possible. Predictability helps children feel secure, while frequent changes or last-minute plans can increase stress.
- If you are traveling, allow extra time and bring child-friendly snacks, books, games, or music to help make the trip more comfortable.
- Avoid overscheduling. It is okay if you cannot do everything or see everyone. Children can become overwhelmed, overtired, and irritable during busy holiday schedules.
- Build in downtime. Children do not need to be engaged all the time. Quiet activities such as reading, listening to music, or taking a walk can help them recharge.
- Prioritize sleep. While staying up late can be exciting, lack of sleep often leads to increased irritability and emotional challenges.
- Maintain family traditions, even if a parent is absent. Familiar routines and traditions provide comfort and help children feel grounded during times of change.
I hope you find this information helpful, and I wish you a relaxing and enjoyable weekend.
Mike
