Principal's Message
Bucyrus Elementary Families,
January definitely gave us a few hurdles with the weather, but BES has been working hard to get the most out of each day with our students.
In the classrooms... We're working on goal setting with our students for iReady and their future careers. iReady testing has seen some delays due to weather, but we'll be wrapping it up this coming week. As we get this important data for our students, you may see some shifts in small group instruction to ensure each student gets exactly what they need to be successful.
In the building... We've welcomed speakers from the community into different classrooms to focus on careers, science and more. Each class has been collecting snowballs in our January Attendance Challenge trying to win different prizes each week with the grand prize being a special field trip to the YMCA.
In the community... The school is partnering with different community organizations to plan engaging, fun, family-friendly events for our students for the spring. Stay tuned for the collaborations as details get ironed out! Mini-cheer also recently cheered at the Bucyrus Redmen Varsity basketball game.
Building leaders...Our 5th grade Principal Advisory Committee has been working hard on developing leadership skills. This has included helping with morning announcements so far. Coming soon will be speaking at the Board meeting, presenting what PAC is to our 4th graders, helping host career events for younger students, leading our guest author on building tours, and much more!
Following our True North... More speakers have been scheduled in multiple grade levels. In addition, students are revisiting their career goals with teachers. Finally, our True North Committee is working hard to plan career events and days for all students PreK-5 this coming spring. Stay tuned for more information on these exciting events!
Let's keep having the BESt year yet!

Classroom Highlights
Preschool
Preschool have been on a food unit for the past four weeks as part of their World of Wonders curriculum and have been reading books and discussing topics related to food. They have been learning about where food comes from, how plants grow, My Plate, different categories of food, and the variety of jobs that correlate to food. The preschool classes tried a variety of foods with everyone baking a gingerbread man and trying it. Mrs. Leightey's classes tried grapefruit and honey. Mrs. Fourman's classes tried cherries and limes. Mrs. Richardson's class has tried figs, dates, and hummus. Lastly, Mrs. Boyd's class discussed New Year's traditions and tried sauerkraut. They have also talked about the word "feast" and brainstormed different types of food that we would like at our feasts such as chicken nuggets, ramen noodles, donuts, and many different fruits being the most requested. They also had a parent who visited and shared information about her career working in the food industry. Preschool also had their first visit of the new year from Barb Scott, the Bucyrus Public Children's librarian, with a fun music and movement lesson.
3rd Grade
Units
Mrs. Keckler and Ms. Smith's rooms have a career corner set up in the classroom.
In September/October they learned all about doctor offices and the different roles such as different types of doctors, nurses, front desk/office manager, custodian/cleaners. The students were able to dress up and become a doctor taking care of their patients (stuffed animals!).
In October/November the career corner was transformed into a grocery store. The students learned all about the different people that keep the grocery stores up and running - cashiers, stockers, managers, bakers, meat department, etc. The students really enjoy getting to run the cash register and spending all the money in the classroom. Restocking the shelves is not a favorite job!
In December/January the career corner became the Lego Factory. Students were able to learn how a factory operates to make some of our favorite items. And they were able to work the assembly line making different items out of Legos.

Every Day Counts: Attendance Highlights
Jump Back in January Attendance Challenge: In January we historically see a decline in our attendance due to illness, weather, it being tough to return from a long break, and more. This year, we're hoping to improve our January attendance with a building competition! We've extended the challenge for one more week due to all the weather related delays and days off.
Coming up: Kindergarten and 1st will be recognized for perfect attendance in February and Preschool in March.
Special Reminders from our Attendance Committee: Please remember that all attendance information needs to be handwritten and sent to the office to count as an excused absence. Rooms messages sent to teachers do not count as excusal notes. However, worried about your child turning in the notes? A parent CAN hand write the note take a picture and email it.
