b.e.s.t. Screener b.e.s.t. Screener

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The Sheboygan Area School District continues the process of creating systems of academic and social-emotional support linked directly to the assessed needs of our students. This system, known as the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS), provides all students with timely and targeted interventions based on the results of universal screening tools in reading, math, and behavioral health.

Universal screening helps school staff to determine which students may be academically or behaviorally healthy and those “at risk”. These screenings can include recent results of state or district tests as well as specific academic or behavior screening tests; these screening assessments are typically administered to all students two or three times per year. Some students may be identified as possibly needing more specialized academic or behavioral intervention. The primary purpose of universal screening refine and strengthen our district’s effort to help all of our students to be successful by allowing us to take positive and preventative measures as early as possible.

The universal screening tool STAR is used in math and reading to help determine where students might have gaps in knowledge and need assistance. The behavior health screening tool, Behavioral Emotional Social Traits (b.e.s.t.) Universal Screening Platform, focuses on identifying externalizing and internalizing behaviors of students and matching universal screening interventions to student’s needs.

The b.e.s.t. as a universal screening instrument is completed by teachers, not the students during October and March and will be available at your school for your review. The results of the b.e.s.t. will be used to reinforce best practices and provide identified students with mentoring, social skill building, and other b.e.s.t. supports to help them engage positively in learning as well as continuing to support behavioral health practices for all children. Thank you for your support in assisting The Sheboygan Area School District in building a system of student support that is linked directly to data. This will ensure that each of our students has the opportunity to receive the assistance they need to achieve academic and social-emotional success. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or if you would like your child to be opted out of this universal screening process.

Vision Screenings at Jackson Elementary School November 11th Vision Screenings at Jackson Elementary School November 11th

1 in 4 school-aged children has a vision problem, and it is not always easy to detect. Sometimes children have trouble seeing and don't even realize they are seeing the world differently than others. Healthy vision is important for learning and success in school. For most children, 80% of learning happens visually. Vision problems can make it hard for children to read and learn, and unfortunately, many fall behind in school or show behavioral problems. To make sure your child is vision ready for success in school, we have scheduled a vision screening for students in 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade. If your child wears glasses, please make sure they bring them to school on this day.

If your child does not pass the screening, we will send a letter home asking that you schedule a complete eye exam for your child. If no concerns are detected, you will not receive a letter. If you have any questions or concerns about the vision screening, please contact your school nurse.
