The Rabbit and the Lawn

Just like that, July is almost done. With the end of July comes Dead Week (Non-Contact Week), where coaches, sponsors, athletes, and parents all get to enjoy some time away from the activities that we love but keep us busy. Dead Week (Non-Contact Week) is a state required time where coaches cannot host any workouts, practices, drills, camps, and anything of the sort. This is an important time where I encourage you all to take time to rest, relax, and enjoy time with family on a vacation or staycation. Refresh those energy and enthusiasm batteries for August and the beginning of the new school year full of activities.

Life is a balance of rest and doing quality work. I use the example of the rabbit and the lawn. I am the stereotypical dad who thrives at mowing my lawn to the finest details, but the past few rains have been spaced out to where I have not been able to mow longer than desired. The other day my oldest daughter and I were looking out the window. All I could see was the tall grass, the trimming I needed to do, patches that could be touched up, weeding in my landscape etc. My daughter tapped my hip and pointed out the window, "bunny, bunny." Lo and behold, there was a cute bunny, not too significant. The difference was, I was focused on the endless tasks that could be accomplished and what I should do next, when my daughter was seeing the beauty that was hidden in the mess. Sometimes in life it is best to stop finding the end of the "to-do lists" and pause to rest and see the beauty in life. Enjoy the little things, take time to rest and be with family and friends, and then get back to the busyness of life.

See you after Dead Week!
