Connecting where we live to what we learn! Connecting where we live to what we learn!

This past Forest Friday, students learned about light and why we are seeing so much less of it as we get further into fall. They also collected fall leaves and used them to create "leaf buddies", which they used as writing inspiration in the afternoons. Kudos to our teacher team for coming up with such fabulous lessons, based in our local forest!

Caregivers, teachers have expressed an interest in having volunteers join for upcoming Forest Fridays: if you are interested, please reach out to your teacher directly:

Here's a look at our current lost and found!

As the temperatures drop, we will still be heading out to play here at RVS! Please be aware that a child who does not want a sweatshirt in the morning is very likely to change their minds when brought outside for recess in the 40-50 degree range. Please be sure your child is prepared by sending a jacket or heavy sweatshirt. Kids have cubbies here at school and are welcome to store them here if they do not want to carry them back and forth each day. Nurse Dot is also putting out a special request that kids bring extra socks - we have almost exhausted our supply here at RVS. Kids who are not wearing boots outside are continuously coming in with wet feet: please consider sending waterproof shoes or extra socks with your child. Please check out this photo of our current lost and found, and remind your child if they need to pick anything up!

On Tuesday, October 31st, students will spend the afternoon at Mad Scientist Day! We will rotate through fun science experiments that may be slimy, icky, or even a little explosive (just baking soda, don't worry!). We are looking for any caregivers that may have fun experiments to share. Please contact Shannon to join in on the fun! We are planning for 12PM - 2PM. As a reminder, students should not wear Halloween costumes to school, nor should they bring Halloween candy. Thanks!

October Reading Challenge and lunchtime book clubs! October Reading Challenge and lunchtime book clubs!

Students in grades K-4 are participating in a reading challenge for the month as they get used to reading at home and tracking their progress. Grades K-2 should return these at the end of the month: grades 3-4 can return them on Fridays. Thanks so much for your support in encouraging your kids to read at home. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you need help accessing books - we have plenty to share!

Also, a big congratulations to our first Grades 3/4 lunchtime book club: they completed their first novel, Because of Winn-Dixie last week, and celebrated by watching the movie and enjoying a themed lunch party. We hope to have even more members join for our second round!

Two outstanding events are coming up from the RFL:

This Saturday, 10/21 at 10:30AM, there will be a Crankie Picture Show! Come see this amazing storytelling tradition, hear some fiddle tunes, and participate in "rock band" percussion play-alongs. RVS students will be excited to know that we also have a crankie here at school: maybe this will provide some inspiration to create our own show!

On Tuesday, October 31st, the RFL will host the 9th Annual Roxbury Trunk or Treat here in the RVS parking lot. Trunk-or-treating will happen from 4:30 - 5:15, followed by a costume contest and parade. Email librarian@roxburyfreelibrary.org for more info.
