5 Things to Know Weekly Update
September 28, 2026
Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to Week 6! Lately, some of us have been counting down the number of big events this fall in addition to the weeks of the semester – several down, big ones like HBUHSD College Night and Chrome for College coming up in October. Last Friday was a very well-organized and successful Science Night (Nite??) with hundreds of children and their families attending. I loved the addition of the nursing pieces – including bandaging teddy bears. We cannot share pictures of the kids for privacy reasons – although I would have loved to show you the adorable children of Heather Kelly and Michelle Palma, among others! So here are a couple of photos of employees – some of the many who put in countless hours to make the event happen (sorry not to have math and science faculty and staff, who are primarily to thank!)
Meridith
Last Tuesday, we had a smaller but very moving event in the Multicultural Center: the unveiling of a mural featuring our students. The artist, Obed Silva, had attended GWC briefly before his journey through the justice system and higher education, eventually becoming a professor at East LA College. He gave a wonderful motivational presentation to the students and employees present – thank you, Nancy and Jessica, for making the connection and bringing him on campus! I hope to have him back here so others can hear his story. And go see the mural!
On to this week – which is AANAPISI Week! The theme is “We Will Not Be Erased.” It kicks off Tuesday with the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival on Tuesday from 11-1 in the Student Union, followed by other events throughout the week. Check out the flyers below or visit the ASPIRE website for more info, and plan to participate as much as you can.
Also on Tuesday, we have Chancellor Yamamura coming for one of our regular visits to update the campus and hear from all of you. The Take A Break event will be from 3-4 pm in MPR, so please come if you are free….it’s a great way to hear about developments directly from the Chancellor.
And one more time: we received a 5-year federal Strengthening Institutions (SIP) grant to focus on developing our work-based learning opportunities for students college-wide! I’ve sent an email thanking the many authors and contributors, and here’s a special shout out to Lauren Sosenko, Dorsie Brooks, Sacha Moore and Gisela Verduzco for leading the charge. Exciting projects to come!
I will be on campus all week, rejoicing over the progress of the ABC Demo among other things (go look – it’s fantastic!) VP Hicks is still making his way around hurricanes, but will return next week.
