The Weekly Update #4
December 2nd, 2025

Welcome to the Art Room!
We made it to May! My favorite month of the year!
Congratulations to all students who had a work of art selected for the art show. What a successful night we had on May 6th. All artwork will be on display until the end of May and then returned to the artist! If you got any pictures of your students at the show (with or without me!) please send them along to sfundinger@walpole.k12.ma.us
As we reach the end of the year, students only have a few more classes with me! Keep an eye out for artwork being sent home as we finish the last few pieces of the year.
Artists Have Been Creating... May
Kindergarten
Kindergarten artists learned about Faith Ringgold and her story quilts. We created our own story quilts by creating a quilt inspired border out of patterned paper squares and then drew our own narrative story in the middle.
1st Grade
1st grade artists learned about Tyree Guyton, who is the artist and founder of the Heidelberg project in Detroit, Michigan. We discussed what found object art is and how Tyree views all types of thing we might see as trash as art materials than can make things beautiful!
2nd Grade
2nd Grade artists have been working so hard on their landscape drawings! We learned about how to show space and depth in a work of art by focusing on size and proportion. Things get smaller as they get further away from us, such as trees, houses, roads, and rivers. We also focused on our craftsmanship in coloring with colored pencils and how to make it look smooth.
3rd Grade
Grade 3 artists are learning about embroidery and sewing. Artists have been practicing a simple stitch to create a border around the edge of a piece of burlap and create an embroidery of a design/image they drew within.
4th Grade
Grade 4 artists created a still life of flowers with a focus on printmaking. Students had to design a vase and create a background with watercolor paint and sharpie. Then, students created their own flower stamp to print coming out of the vase.
5th Grade
Grade 5 artists are beginning to work on their stop motion animation projects. Students are working in groups to collaborate and create a story that they will create, design, and film all of the parts of.
Artists Have Been Creating... April
Kindergarten
Kindergarten artists learned about landscapes in art and the different parts of a landscape such as the horizon line, foreground and background! We used tissue paper to create a landscape out of collage!
1st Grade
1st Grade artists are learning about Claude Monet! Monet is a very famous impressionist who is known for his "plein air" paintings of his bridge over the waterlily pond in Giverny. We recreated our own renditions and learned how to create texture with salt and watercolor paint. Then as an extension we are going to create a 3D frog on a log in a pond to go with it!
2nd Grade
Grade 2 artists have been learning about color! We learned about the tertiary colors, which are when you mix together a primary and a secondary color. After creating our ow unique color wheels, we are now putting our color knowledge to use in creating abstract paintings with a focus on warm and cool colors.
3rd Grade
4th Grade
4th grade artists are wrapping up their sculpture unit! We explored many new and familiar materials such as plaster and model magic to create a slice of cake. Using geometry knowledge with art knowledge and creativity to create these awesome looking desserts!
5th Grade
Grade 5 artists are in the middle of our printmaking unit! Students are learning how to create a reductive two color relief print of an animal. Students traced the image of an animal of their choice to be transferred onto their styrofoam printing plate. This projects requires us to think about line and color choices to have successful prints.
Artists Have Been Creating... March
1st Grade
1st Grade artists are creating self portraits this week. In kindergarten we created a self portrait of just our head and shoulders, this year we are making a full body self portrait .
Grade 2
Grade 2 Artists are reviewing the color wheel and learning about a third set of colors called the tertiary colors! We will be learning how to mix the tertiary colors and creating our own unique color wheels.
Grade 3
Grade 3 Artists are beginning a clay hand building unit. We will be using air dry clay to create a pinch pot animal/creature/character of their choice.
Grade 4
Grade 4 artists are starting a sculpture unit. They will be using cardboard, plaster, and other sculpture materials to create a life-like slice of cake inspired by Peter Anton.
Grade 5
Grade 5 Artists are working hard on their 1 point perspective drawings inspired by surrealism! Shout out to Leu M. Who made this amazing creation at home to share using the skills taught in art!
Artists have been Creating.... January
Kindergarten
Kindergarten Artists are now focusing on the element of art: color! We are learning all about the primary colors, secondary color, color relationships using the color wheel, and color mixing!
1st Grade
1st grade artists are learning about the element of art: Value. Value is the lightness or darkness of a color and helps us to create contrast and more realism in our artwork. We are learning how to make "tints" and "shades" using black and white.
2nd Grade
2nd grade artists learned about African American artist: Alice Beasley. She creates portraits of people using fabric as her medium. Students learned how to create repetitive patterns/designs like fabrics using printmaking and are creating self-portraits using paper collage.
3rd Grade
3rd grade artists are also focusing on the element of art: value. Students are creating monochromatic abstract artworks by creating multiple tints and shades. Students created their abstract compositions using tape to create neat and even sections and had to use critical thinking skills to ensure they left space for the different values that they would make.
4th Grade
4th grade artists learned about artist: Justin Vining. He is a contemporary artist who creates abstracted, whimsical landscapes inspired by the art styles of Vincent Van Gogh and Grant Wood. I love seeing all of the exciting, unique, and creating compositions these artists are designing.
5th Grade
5th grade recently wrapped up their value study of landscapes. Students learned about the concept of "atmospheric perspective" which is a natural phenomenon where things get lighter the further they get away (especially in landscapes). We were inspired by this idea and were able to connect it to value by creating tints and shades for each layer of our landscapes.
