What We Learned from Blind "Ambition" by Ila, Irae, and Phoenix

When we read the story Blind Ambition by Matthew Cooper, we learned a lot about what it’s like to be blind and how people who are blind live their lives. Even though they can’t see, they still find ways to do amazing things!

We learned that people who are blind use something called braille. Braille is a special kind of alphabet made with raised dots that you can feel with your fingers. It’s not the same as the alphabet that sighted people use. Braille helps blind people read and write. With Miss Morris, we took a “Braille Walk” around the school, touching and feeling the braille that is outside all of the doors around Scottsville Elementary. We learned that blind people can also use canes or guide dogs to help them move around. These tools help them stay safe and explore the world around them. We think it’s really awesome how they can still be independent even though they can’t see.

We have a new math program this year, it is called Kiddom. You can work on division, adding and subtracting. Sometimes it is hard but it is really fun. The things that have been hard for our class is drawing the answer and submitting. We also do really awesome with graphs! This year it is harder than last year because we have more questions about "how many more" or "how many less." Sometimes we figure out the problems with our teacher but sometimes we do it with our group. Other times we do this thing called “table talk" It is where our groups work on the problem together.

There is this app called ST Math. There are levels that are based on different math topics but one that has been hard is there is a level that is divided by. We have blocks that we have to make even. In math we think everyone has been trying their best! We can do hard things.
