Principal's Message
Dear Hiawatha Families,
The first day of school is just around the corner, and I couldn’t be more excited to begin this year with all of you! As your new principal, I’ve loved the chance to meet so many students and families over the summer during our playdates. Those moments of laughter and connection gave me a glimpse of the joy and energy that make Hiawatha such a special place.
With many of us (students, families, and staff) starting new chapters together this year, I know we’ll be building something wonderful side by side. I can’t wait to welcome everyone back to school, to see familiar faces and new ones alike, and to begin shaping a year filled with growth, learning, and community.
With excitement,
Kolby Snellenberger
Principal

Meet Georgina, our Therapy Dog!
Hello Hiawatha Community!
For those of you who were at Hiawatha or Summit last year, you’ll be happy to know that Georgina Dog is excited to be returning to school soon! For those of you who don’t know Georgina, she is a certified therapy dog with me through Therapy Dogs of Vermont. She began working with me at Summit and Hiawatha last year in January, and she will be working with me 2-3 days a week at Hiawatha this year. She is a hypoallergenic poodle mix. Because she has hair instead of fur like many dogs, she doesn’t cause allergic reactions for most people. Georgina is very friendly and likes kids. That said, if you have any concerns about allergies, or students being nervous about interacting with Georgina, please don’t hesitate to be in touch with me at the email below, or with your child’s classroom teacher.
Thank you, and looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Social Emotional Learning
Throughout the 2024-2025 school year we will continue to work with small student groups, classrooms, and our school as a whole to teach and foster social emotional learning. We will meet as a whole school to build community and highlight our social emotional learning standards.
In order to support a respectful learning environment we have three school wide expectations: Be Kind, Be Safe, and Be Curious. We recognize specific positive behavior by giving students bees and have classroom and schoolwide celebrations.

Practice Around Food for Celebrations
EWSD promotes a healthy learning environment by supporting good nutrition and regular physical activity as part of an overall wellness policy. Birthdays and other celebrations bring anticipation and excitement to all students. Due to allergies and promoting healthy choices, we do not allow families to provide outside food for celebrations, including birthdays. Thus, we respectfully ask families to follow these standards. Please see this letter for more information: Food For Celebration Letter.
