Message From the Principal Message From the Principal

Dear Wildwood Families,

As I look back on my letters to you this year, there is a running theme-partnership. This year, Piedmont Education Foundation celebrates its 50th anniversary. That’s 50 years of this community partnering with Piedmont Unified School District to provide resources that are vital to the continued success of our schools. At Wildwood, the money received from Piedmont Education Foundation supports resources for classroom teachers, counseling services, intervention specialists, instructional paraprofessionals, visual and performing arts resources, and more.

On September 16th, PEF will kick off its annual Giving Campaign. You will see additional information about this in the coming weeks and I encourage you to go to PEF’s website. Any amount of money you are able to contribute is greatly appreciated.

I also want to take a moment to thank all of you who are spending your precious time volunteering at Wildwood this year. I was impressed with all of the parents who came to our library volunteer training this week and I continue to marvel at the parents who come weekly to support our lunch service. To those of you who came to help with Picture Day and who come to serve on committees, thank you! All of the ways you all volunteer are so appreciated by me and by our school community. You are invaluable to the work of our school.

With gratitude,

Amy Fry

Lice Bulletin Lice Bulletin

Dear Piedmont Families,

We have heard reports from a couple of schools that a few families throughout the community have unfortunately been dealing with head lice. The most important thing we would like you to know is that although they are unpleasant and rather annoying, head lice are not known to transmit disease. And while most commonly found among school-age children, head lice can infest anybody who has direct head-to-head contact with someone who already has active lice. It is not at all related to the cleanliness of a person or their environment.

Given how common head lice infestations are, the fact that they do not spread disease, and the fact that head lice are more likely to spread at home, daycare, or at a friend’s house than at school, exclusionary policies in schools are no longer routine. As reflected in the Piedmont Unified School District Board Policy, the goal is to: “Maximize academic performance and minimize absence due to unnecessary exclusion of students with head lice.” This policy is in alignment with the American Academy of Pediatrics and public health guidance. And while the responsibility for the treatment of head lice rests with the home, we wish to share some resources and tips for recognizing and managing this common condition to help families avoid misdiagnosis and over-treatment, and to be successful at treating active cases at home.

So that you are in-the-know about this condition, please read through the information on the CDPH and CDC websites, as well as the following CDPH materials:

-CDPH Head Lice Flyer

-CDPH How-To Guide For Nit Combing

Materials are available in other languages on the website.

To maximize success and avoid over-treatment, please keep in mind the following key points:

-Although there are several effective over-the-counter treatment remedies available, confirming your child does have lice (along with advice from your pediatrician regarding treatment options) is always advised.

-A single treatment rarely eliminates the infestation. Retreatment if active lice continue to be seen is often necessary (again, please reach out to your pediatrician), and nit removal by frequent combing can help prevent re-infestation and help one avoid the need for a second treatment.

-Regular thorough checks at home (especially after travel and sleep-overs) can help families identify new active head lice cases when they are mild and more easily treated.

-You can help prevent your children from getting head lice by encouraging them to not share brushes, combs, hats, clothes, hair clips, scarves, or other personal items that come in contact with a person's head (including sweatshirts).

We understand that head lice can be uncomfortable, and that successful treatment may require considerable time and effort based on the treatment option you choose. We also know that no matter how careful you and your kids are, at some point they are likely to get head lice, so having matter-of-fact conversations with your kids and fellow parents should help de-stigmatize the issue and help all of our kids avoid unnecessary stress around this common childhood condition.

Should you have questions or need additional information, please feel free to contact the District Nurses by email at: nurses@piedmont.k12.ca.us or by phone at: 510-594-2751.

Thank you so much,

Carol and Claudia

This meetup is aimed for families and caregivers who are new to Wildwood, providing a space to connect on your hopes and concerns about the transition to a new school. It is also a great way to meet others in this great community!

We hope folks are having fun building Harvest Festival scarecrows! It will be exciting to see Wildwood represented on Scarecrow Alley. A shout-out to the 2nd grade, who together are making not one but two scarecrows. Way to get into the spirit. :)

As always, please email WPC with questions. Thank you!

We can’t do this work without your support! While everyone is invited and welcome to join all WPC events, to contribute financially to WPC means to actively support its efforts and programs it provides.
