NWEA MAP Scores
Dear Bobcat Families,
Your child's NWEA MAP Growth scores are now available in Skyward in the Test Result tile. These assessments are given during the school year to help teachers understand what your child knows and what they are ready to learn next. For help accessing scores, please see the attached Skyward Job Aid for Parents. This year’s MAP Growth scores are based on updated national norms. The new national norms make sure your child’s MAP Growth results reflect how students across the country are performing today, giving teachers a more accurate picture for setting growth goals.
This week students received a copy of their MAP data report during their Social Studies class.
If you did not receive a copy, have questions or need further clarification about the data in your child’s report, please feel free to reach out to Sally Willett at sally.willett@fortbendisd.gov
National Principal Appreciation Month
October is Principal Appreciation Month, and we want to take a moment to celebrate our amazing principal, Ms. Petru!
Ms. Petru, thank you for your leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to FCMS. Your support of our staff, care for our students, and passion for making First Colony a place where everyone can thrive do not go unnoticed.
We hope you know just how much you are valued and appreciated by both our staff, students and parents. Your leadership makes a difference every day, and we are grateful for all that you do to support our Bobcat family.
Happy Principal Appreciation Month, Ms. Petru! We appreciate YOU!

8th Grade PSAT Communication
The PSAT test will be given on Wednesday, October 28th during the school day to 8th grade students on campus. Students will not need to bring a calculator, as College Board has integrated a calculator into the new online format. We will test periods 1, 2, 3, and 4. A sack lunch will NOT be required since all 8th grade students will eat “C” lunch from 12:55pm-1:25pm after testing is complete. You can find out more information about PSAT (including practice tests) on the district PSAT
I have attached the letter the district sent to all parents earlier in the week.
Please reach out to Sally Willett with any questions.
Partnering with Parents: Staying Connected to Student Progress
We believe parents and teachers are partners in student success! We encourage parents to regularly check their child’s grades in Skyward and monitor their academic progress. Parents can also sign up for email notifications regarding high-scored and low-scored assignments to stay informed.
Grades should be entered within 5 days of collecting an assignment. Essays and other extended-response assignments may take up to 8 days to be graded and posted.
You should also receive weekly or biweekly communication from your child’s teachers regarding upcoming assignments, important reminders, and classroom expectations.
Please take a moment to review the Late Work Policy below and remind your student of the importance of completing and submitting assignments on time. We have also attached Fort Bend ISD's Middle School Grading Guidelines for additional information regarding daily and major grades, as well as the district’s retesting policy. By working together, we can help our students develop strong academic habits and stay on track for success!
First Colony Middle School Late Work Policy:
1 day late = -10
2 day late = -20
3 day late = -30
4 day late = -40
5 day late = -50

Career Day Message for 8th Grade Parents/Guardians
Dear 8th Grade Parents/Guardians,
On Thursday, November 5, First Colony will host our annual Career Day for our 8th grade students. This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about careers, as well as high school options.
Our keynote speaker will be Marc Vandermeer, Voice of the Houston Texans. We invite community members to speak about their careers. We also invite our feeder high schools to participate, and share the opportunities that their schools offer.
Our 8th graders should attend Career Day, with a mindset of professionalism, and an intention to take advantage of this opportunity.
Please have your student dress in professional or business casual attire for Career Day. We want to impress upon our students, the importance of this event. It is a fun day, but it is also a day for them to learn and grow.
Thank you for your support of our Career Day event.
Best regards,
