🙋🏾Sign Up to Volunteer 🙋🏾
We welcome and appreciate parent involvement! To volunteer for school events, serve as a lunch monitor, or chaperone field trips, you must complete the three-step volunteer clearance process:
Register with PGCPS as a volunteer (every school year). Opens July 1st
Complete a fingerprinting & background check
Complete all Safe Training Videos (every school year)
This process ensures the safety of all students and must be completed before participating in any volunteer activities or chaperoning field trips.
To get started, please visit the PGCPS Chaperone/Volunteer page for CMIT South Elementary. Once approved, please email Ms. Reese at lreese@cmitsouthes.org .
🚌 Transportation & Carline Information 🚗
As a public charter school, CMIT South Elementary does not provide school bus transportation. However, we maintain a list of independent vendors. Please click on the following link, Van Transportation Partners, which many of our current families use for morning and/or afternoon transportation. You are welcome to contact these providers directly to inquire about availability and pricing.
Please note the following:
Student drop-off begins at 7:35 AM when adult supervision is present. Please do not leave your child if there is no adult present.
The gate closes promptly at 8:00 AM.
School starts at 8:00 AM.
If you arrive after 8:00 AM, you have a 5-minute grace period to drop your child off at the front of the building.
Your scholar is considered tardy after 8:05 AM. You must park, escort them into the building, and sign them in using our front office iPad.
Dismissal begins at 2:30 PM, with van riders first, followed by car riders through our KVS pick-up system.
Scholars enrolled in Enrichment will be dismissed to their assigned rooms at 2:45 PM.
If you need to pick up your scholar early, the deadline is 1:30 PM. This allows our staff to wrap up instruction and prepare for end-of-day routines. Please notify your child’s teacher in advance, but know that students will not be called to the office until you arrive.
💻 Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) 💻
Due to current budget constraints, CMIT South Elementary will implement a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy.
What this means:
All students will need to bring their own Chromebook for use both at school and at home
We will no longer be able to provide school-issued devices for every student as we have in previous years
A limited number of devices will be available to rent for $100 per school year
Rental fees may be waived for families with documented financial need
We understand this represents a change from our previous practice, and we're committed to supporting families through this transition. Please click on the following link for detailed information about device specifications, rental options, and financial assistance programs: [Device Information Link] and Chromebook Rental Application
📝 Attendance Matters 📝
Administrative Procedure 5113, Student Attendance, Absence, and Truancy

💛 October: Kindness & Anti-Bullying
Our October character trait is Kindness! Throughout the month, students will learn how kindness can be shown through our words, actions, and everyday choices. We will also celebrate kindness and promote a safe, inclusive school community through our Anti-Bullying Spirit Week. Students will participate in fun, themed activities that encourage friendship, acceptance, respect, and standing up for others. Families are encouraged to join us by talking with their children about the importance of treating others with kindness and helping create a school where everyone feels safe, included, respected, and valued! Be sure to see the Spirit Week details below and join in the fun!
Reading Department
📚 The Power of Reading at Home
Reading together at home is one of the simplest and most meaningful ways to support your child’s learning. Just 15–20 minutes of reading each day can help children build vocabulary, strengthen comprehension, develop background knowledge, and grow into confident, lifelong readers. Even better, reading with your child creates opportunities to talk, ask questions, make connections, and share special moments together.
🌎 Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month Through Books
As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15–October 15), it is a wonderful time to introduce children to books that highlight Hispanic and Latino cultures, traditions, history, and experiences. Reading diverse books helps children see themselves represented in literature while also giving them opportunities to learn about and appreciate cultures and experiences different from their own.
This month, consider adding some Hispanic and Latino authors and characters to your child’s reading list. A few recommendations include:
This month, let’s celebrate heritage, culture, family, and the joy of reading—one book at a time! ❤️📚
Math Departmennt
Welcome to a new school year of learning and growing in mathematics! September is a wonderful time to build strong math habits and confidence. As students learn new skills and strengthen foundational concepts, families can support their learning through simple, everyday math experiences at home.
Families can help by:
- 🔢 Practicing basic facts through games, flashcards, or quick fact challenges.
- 🛒 Finding math in everyday activities—counting, comparing prices, measuring, or telling time.
- 🧩 Playing board games, card games, or puzzles that encourage problem-solving.
- 💬 Asking your child to explain how they solved a problem and why their answer makes sense.
- 🌟 Celebrating effort, mistakes, and perseverance to help children develop a positive math mindset.
Remember, math is everywhere! A few minutes of fun math conversations and activities each day can make a big difference in your child's confidence and success. Let's make this a fantastic year of growing, thinking, and loving math!

Phonics
Reading Comprehension
What Parents Need to Know
No Grades Assigned: DIBELS is an instructional tool, not a graded test. It will not impact your child's report card marks.
Tailored Learning: Teachers use the results to design targeted instruction and identify students who may benefit from supplemental reading support.
Parent Reports: Families will receive an individualized report detailing their child's assessment results after testing is complete.
If you have questions about the assessment process, please contact your child's reading teacher or the School Testing Coordinator.
Grade Level Updates
Kindergarten
Grade Level Blurb:
Please ensure that students are at school on time and are well rested. As we approach the chiller weather please keep in mind if students are feeling unwell please keep them home and work with your scholar about covering their mouths, as they cough and sneeze.
Also, the Kindergarten team has noticed that students are struggling with problem solving. We ask that families encourage students to solve problems themselves. This can look like not spelling for your scholar when they are writing or opening items by themselves. Please make sure that your scholar's shoes are tied when they come to school. We are more than happy to assist students with tying their shoes but please have them double knotted to start the day.
Please practice tying shoes, opening containers, holding crayons or pencils and turning sleeves of jackets from inside out to the correct way with your scholars. In the next two weeks the testing window for Dibels opens, not all classes will be tested on the same day. Be on the look out for your scholar’s teacher to announce the date of testing for their class. Last week saw the start of Hispanic & Latine Heritage Month, so the Kindergarten team would like to share some options for reading together. The following link gives 15 picture books that families could read together; https://www.readbrightly.com/picture-books-celebrate-hispanic-heritage/.

We’re excited to welcome you to another wonderful week of learning, growing, and achieving! We can’t wait to see all the great things our scholars will accomplish this week. Be sure to read below for important updates, reminders, and upcoming events!
📌 Important Reminders:
🔤 Spelling Bingo: Our bingo board is DUE this Wednesday, September 30th!
➕ Math Homework: Students were given Topic 2 math homework. They should ONLY be completing ONE assignment per night in alignment with learning happening in class. PLEASE DO NOT have students go ahead of our learning as this is likely to cause confusion and overwhelm.
🔬STEM Fair packets were sent home last week. Please be sure to attend the Parent University on Monday, September 28th to learn more about STEM Fair in 1st grade.
🎃 Our field trip to the pumpkin patch has been approved! 1st graders will visit Montpelier Farms on October 28th. Permission slips will be sent home this week. Please complete the following form indicating whether your scholar will bring a bagged lunch from home or will need one from school: Field Trip Lunch
💻 Charged Chromebooks: Students should bring their Chromebook to school every day. It is imperative that Chromebooks are fully charged at home each night so students are prepared to participate in learning activities throughout the school day. Even if your scholar’s Chromebook has not yet been completely set up, please begin sending it to school daily tomorrow. We encourage families to make charging the Chromebook each night part of your scholar’s regular bedtime routine.

Reading Updates:
Unit 1 Week 3
This week, students will continue exploring elements of informational text. We will look at text features as we read, "Look Both Ways!"
🏠 How Can Families Help at Home?
Families can support learning by reading nonfiction books, magazines, or child-friendly informational articles together. Encourage your child to identify the topic, main idea, and important details. Ask questions such as, “What did you learn?” “What is this text mostly about?” and “What details helped you learn more?” You can also explore informational texts about topics your child loves, such as animals, space, sports, or nature, and encourage them to share new facts they discover!
Phonics & Spelling
This week in Phonics, students will continue review words with the short /o/ sound as well as words with the /f/, /b/, and /g/ sounds. Our spelling words, this week, are the following: cot, got, not, pot, look, you.
We will also continue reviewing the following high-frequency words: are, by, look, was, you. High-frequency words are words that appear often in books and everyday reading. Sometimes, these words follow regular spelling patterns and can be sounded out. Other times, they have irregular spelling patterns that must be memorized. We call these spelling patterns “heart parts” because students must know them by heart. Learning these words helps students recognize them quickly and read more smoothly and confidently.
We will have a spelling test on Tuesday, September 22nd & new spelling homework will also come home on this date.
Math Updates:
Topic 2
We are moving through topic 2! In this topic, students are learning strategies to help them fluently add and subtract within 10.
🏠 How Can Families Help at Home?
Families can support learning by practicing math in fun, everyday ways! Encourage your child to use counting on, making a ten, using doubles, and breaking apart numbers to solve problems. Practice with everyday situations such as counting objects, adding items while shopping, or figuring out how many are left. Ask, “How did you solve it?” and encourage your child to explain their thinking. A few minutes of practice each day can help build confidence, accuracy, and math fluency!
Science Updates:
Our first graders are working through Topic 1 in Science, where we are observing and investigating light and sound! Students are exploring where light and sound come from, making observations, asking questions, and investigating how they interact with the world around us.
🏠 How Can Families Help at Home?
Encourage your child to be a scientist at home! Look for different sources of light and sound, discuss what they notice, and ask questions such as, “What do you see?” “What do you hear?” and “What do you think will happen?” You can even explore how sounds change when objects are tapped, shaken, or plucked. 🔎✨
Social Studies Updates:
This week, students are continuing through Chapter 1 in Social Studies, where they are learning what it means to be a good citizen and explore how our community and government work together. Students are learning about rights and responsibilities, rules and laws, community leaders, and the role of government. They are also practicing important skills such as distinguishing fact from fiction, solving problems, and making thoughtful choices.
🏠 How Families Can Help at Home?
Talk with your child about ways your family members can be good citizens. Discuss rules, responsibilities, and why we have laws, and encourage your child to share examples of how they can help make their classroom, school, and community a better place.
Health Updates:
We are wrapping up our monthly issue, “Keeping Our Great Body Safe.” Students are learning simple, age-appropriate ways to make safe choices, protect themselves, and take care of their bodies at school, at home, and in their community.
🏠 How Families Can Help at Home?
Families can help by talking with their child about making safe choices at home and in the community. Discuss important safety habits such as knowing trusted adults, following rules, using objects safely, and knowing what to do in an emergency. Encourage your child to explain why safety rules are important and practice safe choices together during everyday activities.

Why did that happen? How did the character feel?). This is a major skill we are practicing in 2nd grade, and discussing stories at home builds incredible comprehension skills! 🧠💬 Math Updates: Our 2nd graders are making awesome strides in math, and we are excited to jump into our next topic! 📊 Starting Topic Two: Work with Equal Groups We are officially beginning Topic Two: Work with Equal Groups! Scholars will be exploring arrays, skip counting, and equal addition groups—building a strong foundation for multiplication down the road! 📋 Homework Packets & "Pick a Project" Update Focusing on Supplemental Packets: Because we have fantastic physical resources ready for our weekly supplemental homework packets, the 2nd-grade team has chosen to opt out of the textbook "Pick a Project" activities moving forward. 📄✏️ Great Job on Project 1: A HUGE thank you to all the families who helped their scholars to complete the first "Pick a Project" assignment! Third Grade
Grade Level Blurb:
Hello Team Third Grade,
It was another busy week of learning with our students. We spent quite a bit of time completing the MAP Math and Reading Growth tests this week. Science is coming on Monday. Please make sure students are prepared. Since progress reports are right around the corner, we will have a half-day this coming Friday, October 2 to submit grades for the students.
Due to the school’s paper shortage, your third grade teachers are in need of copying paper. We have had a few very generous parents make donations. If at any time you are able to send in a ream or two of paper, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for your consideration.
Reading Updates:
In Ms. Howard’s Reading class, we explored the Nigerian folktale Why the Sky Is Far Away. Students focused on asking and answering questions, making inferences, and using details from the text to explain their thinking. We also practiced recounting the story and using our Somebody–Wanted–But–So–Then organizer to write summaries.
Ms. Madison’s students have continued to read folktales, specifically Why the Sky is Far Away, a folktale from the Yoruba people of modern-day Nigeria and West Africa. We also reviewed regular plural nouns (-s, -es, -ies), sentence structure, synonyms, and antonyms! We will continue to closely read said folktale next week, and we will also
Math Updates:
This week in Mr. White’s class, scholars continued strengthening their understanding of multiplication and division. Students have been practicing “rolling their numbers” to build fluency with their multiplication facts and working to understand the relationship between the dividend, divisor, and quotient when solving division problems.
We are continuing to emphasize that multiplication and division are connected, while helping scholars build both their fact fluency and conceptual understanding. Please continue practicing multiplication facts at home!
Family Reminders
Please continue encouraging scholars to practice their multiplication facts/rolling numbers at home and complete any outstanding IXL assignments, as grades for those skills are being entered (for Mr. White’s class). Thank you to the scholars who are already caught up and staying on top of their responsibilities!
Mrs. Flores’ students reviewed for our Topic 1 Math test. We took our final assessment this past Friday. We will gear-up and be ready for Topic 2 this coming week. The students did a nice job in their unit lessons.
Science Updates:
Science MAP Growth testing will take place Monday, September 28. Please make sure scholars arrive on time with a fully charged Chromebook, a good night’s rest, and a positive mindset.
Students are exploring motion and friction. We will also investigate what might change an object’s motion. If all goes according to plan, we will complete a lab or two this coming week.
Social Studies Updates:
In Ms. Howard’s Social Studies, we continued our Land and Water unit, learning about landforms and bodies of water. Students also completed MAP Growth testing this week. I’m proud of the effort they put into their learning!
Ms. Madison’s students are continuing to review regions, landforms, and bodies of water in the Continental United States. These features include the Great Lakes, Appalachian Mountains, Rocky Mountains, major rivers (i.e. Mississippi, Colorado, Rio Grande, etc.), Great Plains, etc. We will go over the specific features of each geographical region next week!
Health Updates:
In Health, we took our unit assessment on Safe Homes. We will move on to our new topic this coming week. Stay tuned!
Field Trips & Chaperones
We are beginning to prepare for upcoming field trip opportunities, and we will need parent/guardian chaperones! If you have already completed the necessary requirements and are currently approved/on the list to chaperone, please reach out to let us know that you are interested and available for future trips.
Having family volunteers makes these experiences possible, and we would love to know who we can potentially count on when field trip details are announced.
As always, thank you to our families for your continued support and partnership. We appreciate everything you do to help our scholars succeed both inside and outside of the classroom!
Fourth Grade
Grade Level Blurb:
Greetings Team 4Ward,
☀️We hope this message finds you well. We are grateful for the continued partnership and care you show for our students. Your support makes a real difference every day. Despite a rainy week, our students came in ready to learn. Thank you for helping them be prepared for wet weather. We’ve reached the halfway point of the first quarter. Our students are finishing up fall diagnostic testing. These assessments help teachers plan instruction tailored to each child’s needs.Students should arrive at school daily and on time. CARTS begin at 8:05 AM, so arriving before then helps students settle and be ready to transition.
🎮 Indoor Recess:
All classes could use donations of indoor activities for recess such as board games, blocks, coloring materials, and card games. If your family is able please donate any gently used or new items to your scholar’s homeroom class. This will help our scholars work on their cooperative and social skills.
💻 Many class activities use online tools. A charged computer ensures your child can fully participate in lessons and complete assignments. Our students also need a pair of wired headphones to complete activities and for testing. Students who arrive on time are better prepared for learning and reduce classroom disruptions. Please plan to have your child at school a few minutes early each day. A healthy breakfast helps students focus and have energy for learning. School breakfast is available daily until 8:00 when students arrive in the morning.
We are grateful for your teamwork, and we appreciate everything you do to support learning, punctuality, and positive character growth.
Warmly,
Team 4Ward
Reading Updates:
This Week:
We concluded our story of the past two weeks “Rare Treasures.” In this biography we read about Mary Anning and what made her remarkable. Students composed an opinion essay this week that focused on Mary Anning. Students have been working this week to provide explanations and support for opinions. Students
Next Week:
We will begin our next text, a magazine article called “Twins in this Space.” In this article we will read about real life astronaut twins Mark and Scott Kelly and the experiment they conducted with NASA. In this text we will read closely to ensure we are comprehending the text and creating new thinking. We will also work on identifying the text structure that the author used to organize the text. By identifying how an author organizes a text it helps the reader to better understand information presented. This week’s word study words are syllable pattern words that end with a vowel, consonant, and silent letter e (Vce)
Math Updates:
📚 Math: Topic 2 — Adding & Subtracting Multi-Digit Numbers
Next week, we’re jumping into Topic 2: Adding and Subtracting Multi-Digit Numbers! Students will build on their place-value understanding from Topic 1 as they learn and practice different strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems accurately and efficiently.
Throughout the topic, students will explore strategies such as partial sums, partial differences, counting up, compensation, and using place value to break numbers apart. We’ll also spend time developing strong strategies for subtracting when there are zeros across multiple places, making sure students understand what is happening with the value of each digit rather than simply following a procedure.
A major focus will be explaining our mathematical thinking and choosing a strategy that makes sense for the numbers in the problem. Students will have opportunities to solve problems in multiple ways, compare strategies with classmates, and justify why their strategy works.
We will also be officially beginning our Math Fluency at Home routine! Students will bring home short, focused fluency practice designed to build accuracy, efficiency, and confidence with foundational math skills. More information about our routine and expectations will be shared with students as we get started.
Science Updates:
As we continue through the first quarter, scholars will keep exploring the different forms of energy and how energy is transferred from one place or object to another.
This week, scholars also began learning how to write Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (CER) responses. In a CER response, scholars make a claim that answers a question, provide evidence from an investigation, text, observation, or data, and explain their reasoning by showing how the evidence supports their claim.
Families can support this skill during everyday conversations by asking questions such as, “What do you think?” “What makes you say that?” and “What evidence do you have?” Whether discussing why an ice cube melted, which route to school is faster, or why a favorite team won a game, encouraging scholars to explain their thinking helps strengthen the same reasoning skills we use in science.
Social Studies Updates:
This week, students learned about the five regions of the United States and explored the natural resources found in each region. Students examined how different resources are used by people and how the geography of a region can influence the way people live and work.
Next week, students will explore the relationship between people and the land. We will learn how people interact with their environment, how they use the land and its resources, and how people can change and adapt to the places where they live.
Fifth Grade
Grade Level Blurb:
Welcome to another exciting week in fifth grade! Can you believe we are already halfway through the first quarter? Progress support is right around the corner, so please be sure to check Synergy regularly to keep track of your student's grades. 📚 What We're Learning This Week:
Reading Updates:
In RLA, our main hot topic is Writing Personal Narratives. Students are taking a deep dive into crafting their own true stories by focusing on meaningful life experiences. They are practicing how to hook their readers with engaging beginnings, enrich their writing with vivid sensory details, and structure their thoughts using clear, organized plot outlines.
Math Updates:
In Math, we are currently finishing up Topic 2 on Adding and Subtracting Decimals, with our current focus on Lesson 2-5 (Subtracting Decimals). Since we only have one lesson left, Topic 2 is quickly coming to an end! Please prepare for an assessment later this week, anywhere between Wednesday and Friday. Students will bring home a study guide to help them review, so please stay tuned for that.
To bring our decimal practice into the real world, students will also bring home a fun project paper this week called "Pick a Project: Restaurant Math & Calories." In this interactive assignment, students will act as restaurant guests planning a meal from a menu with varied pricing and nutritional information. They will apply their decimal math skills to choose items, calculate total costs within a budget, and analyze calorie counts in a practical, real-life scenario. Looking ahead, our next big focus for Topic 3 will be Multiplication, which we will introduce next week.
🏠 How You Can Help at Home
As we prepare to transition into our upcoming multiplication unit, practicing basic math fact fluency at home every day is one of the best ways you can support your student. Just a few minutes of daily practice—whether with flashcards, quick mental math games, or online tools—will build your child's confidence and make learning multi-digit multiplication much less stressful!
Science Updates:
This week, students reviewed and completed their Topic 1: Matter Assessment. Next week, we will begin Topic 2: Changes in Matter! Students will explore physical and chemical changes, mixtures, and solutions. Through hands-on learning, students will measure and graph quantities to demonstrate that matter is conserved when it changes form, undergoes a chemical change, or is mixed or dissolved with other substances.
Social Studies Updates:
In Social Studies, we are stepping into Chapter 2, Lesson 2: Explorers for Spain. Alongside our historical journey, we are reinforcing key literacy skills. Students are learning to order historical events through sequencing and are examining primary resources—such as original letters, maps, and artifacts—to understand history through first-hand perspectives.
Health Updates:
In Health class, we are exploring First Aid Essentials. Students are learning how to distinguish between common minor injuries like cuts and bruises, as well as how to react properly in various everyday scenarios and emergency situations.
