A Note from Mr. Rehak

Hey Glenwood Families,

As I reflect on my first few days at Glenwood, I want to thank our school community for such a warm and welcoming start. Our students and staff have been incredibly kind, and it’s been an absolute pleasure getting to know them. I’ve loved visiting every classroom and spending time with our students during arrival, dismissal, recess, and in the cafeteria. Students are eager to introduce themselves with big smiles, fist-bumps, and high-fives and ready to grill me with questions. I have loved every second of it.

One thing that really stands out is how each classroom has its own welcoming and inclusive community where students are excited to learn and grow. It is evident that each staff member genuinely cares about our students. Glenwood is so fortunate to have such a dedicated and supportive staff, with strong systems in place to care for both the academic and social-emotional needs of our students. I’ve enjoyed meeting so many smiling faces and am already working hard to learn as many names as I can!

I’m looking forward to continuing to learn the Glenwood way, meeting our families, and taking part in the many events and activities that make Glenwood such a special place.

Best,

Josh Rehak, Principal

Glenwood Happenings Glenwood Happenings

Kindergarten

A blizzard of blending is happening in Kindergarten this January! Kindergarten students continue to work hard learning new sounds and using them to blend words together. Our CKLA Skills units are focused on three-letter short vowel words to help us become strong readers. Students are blending, reading, chaining, and writing these words. Students also enjoy blending the sounds to play games and make crafts! Some "fished in snow" (cotton balls and gems) to find pictures and letters to make matching CVC words.

Parent / Guardian Resources & Reminders Parent / Guardian Resources & Reminders

Dear Families,

Rose Tree Media students in grades 2 through 9 will once again participate in the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) testing. We will administer this test beginning January 12th through February 2nd. These tests determine your child’s instructional level and measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year, in the areas of reading and math. These computerized tests are adaptive which means the difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answers all of the previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions become more difficult. If the student answers incorrectly, the questions’ levels once again adjust.

MAP tests are extremely important to teachers because they keep track of progress and growth in basic skills. The test scores let teachers know where a student’s strengths are or if help might be needed in any specific areas. Teachers use this information to help guide individual and group instruction in the classroom and the district uses the results to continue to improve teaching and learning that promotes student achievement in all our schools. With this in mind, it is extremely important that students give their best effort so their abilities and needs can be accurately measured and addressed.

If you have any questions regarding this or any District assessment, you may reach out to your building’s MTSS teacher either by email or phone for support. Thank you for taking an active interest in your child’s education.

Sincerely,

Christa A. Consadene

Director of Technology, Instruction, Intervention, & Assessment

Winter Benchmark Assessments

Rose Tree Media students in grades K through 5 will once again participate in winter growth assessments this month. These tests help to determine your child’s instructional level and measure academic growth throughout the school year. They provide teachers with additional information on student progress toward proficiency and mastery of basic skills. The test scores let teachers know where a student’s strengths are and if support might be needed in any specific area. Teachers use this information to help guide individual and group instruction in the classroom. As well, to promote student achievement in all our schools, the district uses these results to continue to improve teaching and learning. These assessments will be administered by members of the MTSS team in each elementary school as part of the regularly scheduled instructional day.

Throughout the month of January, the following assessments will be administered across various grade levels:

Kindergarten – 5th Grade

  • DIBELS 8 (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills--A series of short (one-minute) assessments to measure essential early literacy skills.

Kindergarten – 1st Grade

  • Acadience Math--A math assessment designed to measure the development of early numeracy skills.

2nd – 5th Grade

  • MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Testing--A computerized, adaptive test that measures academic growth in reading and math.

    • Testing Dates:

      • ELA- Tuesday, January 13th

      • Math- Thursday, January 15th

Electronics Reminder - Smartphone and Smartwatches

The new year brings opportunities to revisit expectations with our students. As we return from the holidays, we know many students may have received exciting new gifts, including electronic devices such as phones and smartwatches. We want to take a moment to remind families of our school guidelines regarding personal devices. To maintain a focused and productive learning environment, including during unstructured times, all non-district issued devices must be turned off and stored in students’ backpacks throughout the school day. These devices should remain off during academic classes and are not permitted during lunch or recess.

If a student wears a watch, it should be used only for telling time and may not be worn if it has the features for texting, calling, gaming, or accessing the internet. If a parent or guardian needs to contact their child during the school day, please email your child's teacher. If you have an urgent last minute update, you may call the Main Office and we will be happy to assist.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in helping us create a safe, focused, and positive learning environment for all students.
